  • Thanks a lot to everyone that has responded. It's really hard for me to face the facts (even if I know it's true, deep down) that there is no "miracle" way to easily start making changes, or even to get motivated, really. It's gonna be hard. I really appreciate everyone that has given advice on how to deal with the…
  • Thanks! Luckily, my perfectionist nature allows me to take pride in really accurately logging food. It's just a matter of staying motivated and agreeing to myself to take the time to log everything properly.
  • Thank you. It is nice to hear that others have struggled with depression and have learned how to manage it. I do have a food scale and have used it before. I suppose mostly it is an issue of not being lazy and using it when I eat at home. I learned the hard way several years back that eating at a very low deficit doesn't…
  • I'm not worried about the calories from tea, since I drink it unsweetened... it can't be more than five calories, which I think is negligible. I am horrible at drinking enough water... I actually had a minor medical issue come up a year ago because of it. So I have been trying to drink more fluids in general, but I am…
  • EDIT: Apparently there are fitness fanatics that might criticize my first sentence. Let me state that I'm not a fitness professional, so I honestly have no idea how bodies work on that level. However, I think that every body is a little different. If you find that eating breakfast makes you lose weight better or gives you…
  • One month away from graduating from undergraduate university! I'm looking for jobs in the marketing and user experience industries!
  • Congratulations! Always try to remember that the scale is only one part of the goal of weight loss! Fitting into comfier (or smaller) clothes, being able to exercise more without being fatigued, having a better attitude about your body, learning how to portion control and heat healthier, etc are all really important, too!

  • If you want to NET 1,300 calories as your goal, meaning that if you exercise off 300 calories, you are then able to add this on, so you'd EAT a total of 1,600 calories, definitely eat back your calories!
  • Haha, you made me laugh. :) We just got an H&M about two years ago in my hometown, which is only an hour away from my university. I was only able to go once or twice, but I will definitely check that out!
  • Yes! I am always pretty self-consious if I'm wearing tight workout clothes. I know that the "fitness" shirts get rid of sweat better or whatever-it-is that they do... but I always choose to work out in one of my freebie old t-shirts that are a little too big for me. I think that when I have lost a bit more weight, I will…
  • 113, 5'6" is really small, but don't forget that weight does not equal level of physical fitness! I have a friend who is 5'8" and close to 200 pounds who has a higher endurance and more muscle mass than my 5'8" 120 pound friend. The 120-pound friend can barely jog half a mile, even though she's really thin. That being…
  • And who is to say that she doesn't "respect her own body"? I have a dear friend who dabbles in the pornography business, takes great care of herself (mentally, physically, and emotionally), and respects herself (and others). Being photographed completely covered up, partially nude, or fully nude has absolutely no…
  • Congrats! Wow! We have pretty much the exact same starting stats! I'm 5'6" and started at a little under 190 pounds. I was a size 8 in high school, and right now I'm a size 14 in jeans (though somehow I'm a size 16 in dress pants). My goal weight is 140, and I'm currently 184! You're so inspirational!
  • OP, I think you are stressing a bit too much over this. I understand that you are irritated about the gym's practices and concerned that someone might get hurt, but it seems to me like you also might be irritated because things aren't being solved the way YOU want them to be solved. I know that it's tough when people can't…
  • Your situation sounds very hard; I'm sorry that your family and friends aren't making a good environment for you. I am quite lucky to have supportive family members, and a boyfriend that is also very supportive, but I almost never talk about my weight loss journey with my friends. Almost all of them are in good to decent…
  • Congratulations! You're really beautiful, both before and after!
  • I am somewhere between 5'5.5" and 5'6", and my goal weight is 135-140. I weighed around 150-155 through most of college, and looking back, I looked pretty good. The reason why my goal weight is 15 pounds or so lower than that is because I "sucked it in" pretty much all the time. There wasn't too much flab on my tummy, so…
  • If you think about it strictly on numbers, you will feel better! It takes you 3,500 calories OVER your resting metabolic burn rate to gain a pound. If you burn 2,000 calories a day to maintain your current weight, you'd need to eat over than to gain anything at all, and a few hundred calories over that amount is not going…
  • <3 Haha, I love you for that comment. Secret Evil Nerd Society? Secret Existential Nerd Society? Secret Enlightened Nerd Society?
  • I agree with a couple other people here who have said that your calorie limit might be too low. 1,200 calories is the minimum level you are supposed to eat to be healthy, and that doesn't work for everyone (for most people, in fact!). If you are eating too few calories, your body will probably hold on to them more…
  • Haha, awesome! I really like that I tend to have a fairly decent balance with my nerdery, though! I like fashion, interior design, graphic design, hipster clothes, hiking, drinking, and going to raves. Sooo, I'm kind of a cluster***k of "cultures" I guess!
  • It's pretty hard to keep a secret; frankly, I embrace it. I've logged over 370 hours in Skyrim, play video games during 75% of my free time, love my college major (and write a blog so I can gush about it), read a lot for fun, and regularly cite memes and internet culture during my everyday life. If we're gonna get real…
  • Thanks for the information, everyone! I am considering bumping my calorie goal to somewhere between 1,350 and 1,450. I think that my brain and body will both thank me for it. I am pretty content losing weight slowly, since one of my goals is to just be below 150/145 pounds by December 2013 (40 pounds in 9 months seems…
  • I really don't want to generalize here, but these are my thoughts on the matter: I see it all the time: boys in the military try to "grow up" too fast. I don't think it's always malicious. I was in an on-and-off relationship with a kid in the military who told me he was going to propose to me; we broke up three months…
  • The scale fluctuates so much on a day-to-day basis. Especially for us ladies... hormones can really screw with the scale. So can water weight and muscle! I totally understand. I have been at this for about two weeks, and when the scale agrees with me, I have lost about 3 pounds... but when my body decides to rebel, the…
  • If you were going to wear the cream-colored one, could you wear any jewelry with other colors to even out the white? Or maybe a shawl or light jacket to wear on top?
  • As long as you are eating at least 1200 calories per day, are not feeling hungry/refusing to feed your body, eating at appropriate times & appropriate portions, and eating all of the appropriate food groups needed to get the right vitamins & minerals, etc., I think that you're fine. Of course, I'm not a doctor or anything…
  • I do eat lots of fruits and veggies. Most of my snacks are kiwis, mangoes, oranges, or carrots. I try to cook my own tortillas sometimes and have been trying to incorporate more cooking into my meals, but I'm a college student on a really tight budget & pretty busy, so I'm unable to cook all of my meals from 100% fresh…
  • It's not just water weight fluctuations. I know that a lot of sodium in a diet is bad. My dad's doctor said he has to watch his sodium because he used to put salt on everything. I want to try to stay within the healthy limit of sodium intake if I can, but I am finding it really hard to do so, even as I am trying to reduce…
  • Try Dishonored! I love FPS games, but can only play them on my PC, so my XBOX titles are almost all RPG without a shooting aspect. As far as fitness games, try Fruit Ninja Kinect, YourShape Total Fitness, or Dance Central.
