  • I buy organic produce. It's less about preservatives and more about pesticides. In my opinion, in addition to being better for me (due to lack of pesticides), I think organic farming is better for the environment in general. Also, while I'm not a vegetarian, I eat more veggies than anything else -- so I don't like the idea…
  • I buy organic when at all possible. I don't think it's healthier in terms of nutrients, but I do think it's a big deal NOT to be ingesting any more chemicals/pesticides/hormones that we have to. (I need to upload a photo -- this blank head looks so unfriendly!)
  • I think I'm eating 4-7 veggie servings per day, and usually only 1 fruit, or 2 at most. I am a firm believer that eating veggies is the key not only to weight loss but overall health. The more veggies I eat, the better I sleep, and the fewer headaches I get. And obviously they're terrific for the digestive system.
  • I log them, not because I'm concerned about the # of calories they add, but because it pleases me so much to see that can eat a generous portion of fruits and veggies and they're really so FEW calories! :-) Plus I think it's worth having the data in case you want to look back and try and identify patterns. For instance, I…
  • I respectfully disagree. I think it's better to eat either 5 smaller meals a day, or 3 meals with 2 or 3 small snacks. I do agree with the person who mentioned veggies and nuts. Some green or red bell pepper strips with a little bit of light Ranch for dipping is very tasty. I often have 14g of cashews (half a serving) and…
  • Here's a list of iron-rich foods from the American Red Cross website: http://www.redcrossblood.org/learn-about-blood/health-and-wellness/iron-rich-foods
  • Good for you! Feels great, doesn't it?!
  • I've never heard of it before. Doesn't make sense to me. Considering that some people think you should eat 5-6 smaller meals per day, that REALLY wouldn't leave time to drink water! I would just drink it when you want to, or drink it constantly throughout the day. I always have water at hand.
  • Fair enough! I have cut up some veggies in advance if I'm going to be cooking them anyway. I've never had a problem with any drying out particularly.
  • Cucumber is probably the one that can feel slimy the quickest, since it's mostly water anyway. But in any case, I don't think the paper towel absorbs much from the veggies -- just a little from the surface. The paper towel is damp but not sopping.
  • I don't have anything to back this up, but I'm pretty sure I've read that cut veggies tend to lose some nutritional value over time. So I try to cut the night before for lunches, but no earlier than that. That said, when I do cut ahead (even if just the night before), I store in a tight container with a half paper towel…
  • OK, so no seafood and some breakfast things you don't like. Should still be do-able. For dinners, I would recommend trying to go meatless at least a couple of nights a week. There are wonderfully filling lentil sloppy joes, baked sweet potatoes, whole wheat pasta with lots of veggies mixed in..... On meat nights there are…
  • Fantastic! You should be really proud. :-)
  • The five a day should be mostly veggies, not mostly fruit, so just look for the lower carb veggie options. Here are some possibilities: Sprouts, alfalfa and other small seeds (sprouted legumes have more carb) Greens – lettuce, spinach, chard, etc. Hearty Greens - collards, mustard greens, kale, etc. Radicchio and endive…

  • Yes, everything said here. Food processors are a pain in the butt to clean, and less safe than knives in my opinion. That said, I pat my veggies dry with a dish towel after washing them. But that's just because I'm fussy about feeling wetness on my hands while preparing food.
  • I like the idea of cutting the portions you add to begin with, and/or cutting with water as you did. But I would count the full amount for what you add -- after you divide the meal into servings, it's not as much extra per serving, but you're still playing on the safe side.
  • I would consider cutting to 2% milk at least. If you buy organic you won't notice as much of a taste change. The protein and calcium and vitamins will be there but with half the fat. I would try to cut that sugar intake gradually (I agree with those who say don't worry as much if it comes from fruit... but I WOULD make…
  • P.S. You might try to google the "Snobby Joes" lentil recipe. I just made it for the first time this week. Surprisingly "meaty" texture for a vegetarian dish. I eat it on whole wheat English muffins. (A serving is one English muffin split into its two halves, with 1/4 cup mixture on each half.) Then a veggie side dish (or…
  • I agree with those who say to add tons of fruits or veggies -- only I would say make sure that's mostly veggies, with a little less fruit. Veggies are wonderfully filling and have so few calories, plus I'm convinced they just kick things into gear and promote weight loss. Also with your Achilles problem, is there a machine…
  • The way you're measuring for the oil you fried in and the marinade seems sensible to me. I'm not an expert, though.
  • We decided long ago never to go to dinner on Valentine's Day, because so many restaurants limit their menus and rush you through the meal with substandard service. My birthday is Valentine's Day, and one year my parents visited to take me and my husband out for dinner, but we waited until Feb. 15. We told the waiter it had…
  • GROUND TURKEY SKILLET LASAGNA Note: best when made and then refrigerated overnight to allow flavors to blend. I actually freeze the four portions individually for later meals. A little time intensive on the veggie chopping, but worth it to me. 4 servings - 1 tsp olive oil - approx 10 oz ground turkey (half of one 20 oz…
  • There was a pasta dish at Olive Garden -- basically angel hair pasta with diced tomatoes in olive oil. Delicious, but I was shocked to find out that it took up almost my entire daily Weight Watchers point allowance! (Sorry, I don't know the calories, but based on the WW points, the calories were awfully high!)
  • P.S. These mini-quiches are vegetarian and I do not re-heat them. I make them in the toaster oven at home, keep in the fridge at work, and eat them cold. I love them that way!
  • I'm not sure if you're talking about lunch or snacks or both. For lunch, today I had 3 mini quiches (Whole Foods 365 brand -- they're tiny but still have a fair few calories), 1 light mozzarella string cheese, and a ton of raw cucumber, red pepper, and celery eaten plain. For snacks, grape tomatoes and carefully weighed…
  • I've enjoyed them in the past but now I find they have a bit more sugar than I'm comfortable with.
  • Nice list, thanks! More inspiration for me to try a few things I haven't tried yet, like watercress and cranberries.
  • I found that when I started Weight Watchers a few years ago and started eating veggies, veggies, and more veggies, it changed everything -- I sleep better, I have fewer migraines and they're less severe, and I have a much better digestive routine. A lot of people on WW commented that when they really ate their veggies,…
  • Thanks for this thread; you've inspired me to make an effort to find a source for local eggs. (I would give a lot to be allowed to raise chickens, but in our suburban area it's forbidden not only by the homeowners association but also by city rules.)
  • Terrific post by the original poster. I have not read all the comments but was pleased to see that the first few were positive. Hats off to you for taking charge of your situation and for standing up for yourself and others. :-)
