Historically beer was consumed because the water supply was unsafe. So yes, it does hydrate you. See this: http://www.backpacker.com/blogs/1074 It was also a major source of calories for a lot of the population. So calling it liquid bread is actually not too wide of the mark.

That's good to hear! Good luck with it - once you have some sources of information I'm sure you'll do fine.

I like the definition of pollution as being the wrong concentration of a compound in the wrong place at the wrong time. Our metabolism depends on chemical reactions. We're made of chemical elements. Hey, here's a suggestion: why don't we all learn some elementary chemistry and stop believing the word of scientifically…

You could start here: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/gluten-free-diet/my01140 Did your doctor give you a diagnosis of coeliac disease? It's important to know this since you'll have to be a bit more strict about avoiding gluten if you're actually coeliac. See here: http://www.coeliac.org.uk/gluten-free-diet-lifestyle

Hmmm...hazelnuts and cob nuts. Rose hips. Some red deer meat and wild boar (although the latter are technically a reintroduction). Scallops, mussels, whelks, oysters and cockles. Crabs, brown shrimp, dublin bay prawns. Oh yes, mallard and partridge, too. Aaaaaand...elderberries, blackberries, raspberries, gooseberries,…

Yeah, this sort of discussion is all about power relations. It's the same on the forums here. I think the "I know" response is the best one for stopping it!

On two previous occasions, I lost a lot of weight by sticking to 1200 net calories a day. I was hungry and cold all the time and by the time I reached goal I was permanently, stomach-painingly ravenous. I ended up yo-yoing both times. This time round I took a different approach. I looked up what the net maintenance calorie…

I only feel bad if I've had to eat something I didn't enjoy. Otherwise, all food makes me happy. Which is why I have an account on MFP!
-
Yes, I love them too.

Yeah. I had cheesecake the other day. There was plenty of it and one slice was about 380 calories. We certainly have nothing to boast about in the UK (and me in particular!), but the food in the US sounds incredibly calorific. Is it all because of portion size?

Do you like nuts? They're pretty calorie dense and if you snack on them then you'll pretty soon reach your calorie target. They're reputed to be good for your health, too. I like nuts. Yummy.

Yeah. Hungary took a bit of Turkey, dipped it in Greece and fried it in Japan. Haven't thought about that silly school rhyme in years!
-
That does shock me. The McDonald's burger (quarter pounder with cheese) and medium fries I had for my lunch today came to 820 calories. Was your lunch a really big portion? How on earth do they get so many calories into one meal?

Have you ever had your liver function tested?
Never even occured to me, my doc never mentioned it either, I wonder why. Perhaps i should go see him again....
Yeah, the reason I suggested that is because of what you said about getting an immediate hangover when you drink alcohol. That can be a sign of…

Yes. I refer to mine as my 'paninisator'.

1250 calories! What's in it - pure fat?

When you say bloat, what do you mean exactly? Are we talking bowel gas, or something else?

Well, having worked in a government department which dealt with food and agriculture, I can't say it would surprise me if it turned out that the agriculture lobby has a powerful influence over dietary recommendations. But this is understandable. Most countries probably wouldn't be able to feed their inhabitants in a…

I'm not sure if this is the same thing, but I'm rarely thirsty. And I only drink by sipping slowly - I can relate to that 'awash' feeling when I drink a lot of fluid. Plus I really hate the splash of large quantities of fluid in my stomach. My husband can neck a whole pint of anything in one go, which to me is unthinkable.…

I'm a very big fan of wallies myself. Otherwise, my faves are: Tripe Old-skool east end of London pie & mash Jellied eels and indeed eels in any other style (but I'm not eating them at the moment for conservation reasons)

Aren't you worried about the sodium content of 3?

Some overweight people do have a 'slow metabolism' (ask any endocrinologist). However, this may or may not have a causal relationship with their obesity.

Mine's 2 coffees with milk before I leave the house, and another mug at 1045 coffee time. A couple of times a week I fancy an espresso after dinner, too. I've been to quite a few places (sailing trips, camping trips in the remote tropics) where there was no morning coffee, only water. Surprisingly enough, that's always…

Dunno, but I predict that the mean of everybody's guesses will be the closest value to the truth.

Rule no 1 - get your bra properly fitted by someone who knows what they're doing and does not just rely on a tape measure. With bras it's always horses for courses - what suits one person will be totally unsuitable for the proportions of another. Rule no 2 - for some of us, all sports bras are in some way unsatisfactory.…

When I had my BMR measured in the phsiology lab they specifically told me not to have coffee that day (among other things) because it raises the reading. I know some people who feel queasy if they have coffee on an empty stomach, but that's a completely different issue. Nutritionists really do talk a lot of bollocks.

This sounds glorious, and just the thing for the leftover brown rice (my husband always cooks too much). Sunday breakfast for me! Thank you.

I'm in. This will be my Saturday breakfast!

Yeah, I agree. A while ago I stayed in a hotel in Santo Domingo and they served up sliced avocados with the breakfast. This really made me see the joy of avos. The fast food salad tip is a great one, so thanks for that. I doubt there's a food that can't be improved by the addition of avocado.
