  • Should show now I think. The picture URL has to be marked as an img.
  • You are not alone by a long shot. Although MFP's population does seem to be overwhelmingly female there are quite a few of us men lurking about. I started my journey here almost one year ago and I can tell you without a doubt that if you're honest with yourself that you will reach your goals. I was heavier than you are now…
  • I keep saltines and single serve cups of peanut butter in my desk at all times for snacks. I have also been known to keep a couple of Nature Valley Strawberry yogurt bars in there for emergencies.
  • Personally I can't stand the show. I think it promotes a very unhealthy way of losing weight by using crash diets and massive amounts of exercise that aren't a way of life that can be maintained over the long term. I'll wager that the vast majority of people who lose weight on the show gain it all back and then some as…
  • Pepsi. I used to drink 4-6 12 oz cans or bottles a day. Now I only drink Coke Zero or water. Yes, I know, artificial sweeteners are "bad" for you. But not as bad as all of that high fructose corn syrup.
  • I'm about the same height as the OP and based my goal on this calculator: http://www.halls.md/ideal-weight/body.htm my goal weight range from the medical recommendation is 136 (no f'ing way) to 179 (doable). the people's choice weight shows at 175 for me.. I'm shooting for 170 for an even 100 pounds lost. there are any…

  • Welcome to all of the new members! I can say without a doubt that you have made a good decision in selecting MFP to help you along your weight loss journey. There are only a couple of things that you have to remember.. 1) Be honest with yourself in your entries. It's no use trying to lie to yourself and leave out calories…
  • Hi Kate and welcome to the MFP community. There are many helpful souls here to assist you on your journey. As for your success I can only relate my own personal experience. The people here are very supportive and non judgmental for the most part, as we are all on this journey together. You have made a very wise decision in…
  • You're right, a pound of fat weighs the same as a pound of muscle. What is meant when people say that muscle weighs more than fat is that muscle weighs more than fat "by volume". One pound of muscle takes up less space than one pound of fat.. So you can lose inches and not lose weight.
  • I quit a little over 6 years ago using the Nicoderm CQ patch. But that was just to stave off the cravings of the first month or so. The real secret, like weight loss, is that you have to WANT to quit. It takes commitment and self discipline. I quit smoking for the same reasons that I'm now losing weight, because I want to…
  • I will also suggest the couch 2 5K program. I'm a recent graduate who hadn't run much (at all) since I got out of the Army 20 years ago. I'm now running 3 miles three days per week and gradually picking up my pace, I'm now running a 8.5 minute mile (7MPH). While I won't be breaking any records soon it's a HUGE improvement…
  • Welcome and good luck to you Kassy! There are a great many helpful people on this site and a large number who have been very successful in their journey. I can now count myself among the successful ones if not the helpful I think.
  • Welcome Doug. I understand how discouraging it can be to see the pounds slowly creep back on after losing so much. The yo-yo effect of dieting was making me miserable. But this time I decided that I'm NOT on a diet, I'm on a budget. What hurt the most in my previous attempts was having to deny myself some of my favorite…
  • Great work and keep at it! You can definitely see a difference in your photos. I joined MFP in November of last year and you can tell from the ticker in my signature how much it's helped me on my journey. Welcome and keep up the good work!
  • I exercise 5 days a week. Strength training for a different area of the body every day , 10 minute warm up walk, 30 minute run 3 days a week, 30 minute elliptical the other two days, and a 10 minute cool down walk.
  • I use Splenda to sweeten and two of the portion control cups of regular unflavored half and half ( .5 fluid oz, 20 calories per). Grand total per 12 oz cup of coffee is about 44 calories.
  • Since joining MFP in November of 2009 I've lost 82 lbs. am currently sneaking up on my goal weight of 175 from a starting weight of 270ish. I may go for 170 just to make it an even 100 lb loss.
  • You can definitely see a difference! Congratulations on your progress and stick with it! I'm easing up on my one year anniversary with MFP and moving ever closer to my updated goal (I met my first major goal in August when I dropped below 195 lbs from a starting weight of 270).
  • It will. The pace set up with the C25K program is supposed to be close to a 10 minute mile, although the focus is really to get yourself into the shape to be able to run for 30 minutes by the end of the program, speed will come along as you train more. Like anything else, your results will vary depending on the effort you…
  • Gateway to 8K!
  • Likewise. I log everything I eat just afterward so I don't forget anything. Having the MFP App on my iPhone helps a lot with this since I can enter food into my diary any time or anywhere. I don't really plan my meals beyond knowing where I stand for the day as far as calories left for the day. Then again, I'm not really…
  • Prepared with water in the microwave with a snack size container of cinnamon applesauce added for flavor/sweetening after the oatmeal is cooked..
  • Congrats on the 5K run! Thats a great accomplishment! I've yet to do anything competitive but I've upped my workout routine to five days a week now. I'm to the point that I can maintain a 7MPH (8.5 minute mile) pace pretty much indefinitely and am going to push the speed up to 7.5 MPH (8 minute mile) probably next week and…
  • I use the Griffin sport band. I have one for my iPhone and one for my iPod Nano. I use one of them when I'm motorcycle riding as well as when I run for convenient access to my music. The velcro closure on the one for the iPhone seems to be a bit more secure then the iPod nano version, I've nearly lost my ipod twice while…
  • It sounds like you're talking about the same 5K that I'm going to be running on November 13th in Orlando. The Children's Miracle Network Torch Relay. Small world. Too funny!
  • Good for you Bru!! I signed up for a 5K where I work to that benefits the Children's Miracle Network in November. Now I'm trying to get people to pledge donations in my name for this great cause. wmchick81: Don't give up. I felt the same way when I was working my way through the program. If you aren't comfortable…
  • Cutting regular soda out of my diet was a HUGE step for me. As my wife said, she thought I would go to my grave with a can of Pepsi clutched tight in my hand. She was more surprised than anyone that I cut it out completely in favor of Coke Zero. I've even started limiting the amount of that I drink in favor of water most…
  • I felt the same way when I started the C25K program. It was difficult for me to see myself running for 30 minutes after only 9 weeks of training. I have to admit that I did repeat week 4 when the final run didn't go as easily as I would have liked, but I stuck it out and graduated a few weeks ago. Now I'm working my way…
  • I used the podcasts from Robert Ullreys. You can find his podcasts here: http://www.ullreys.com/robert/Podcasts/ He made his own music mixes, not really my taste in music but the voice prompts were very helpful.
