  • Clothing choices depend on how cold the weather is and how warm you get when you exercise. I generally wear a Columbia shell jacket as the outer layer for wind resistance and pockets (works by itself when the weather is warmer). I vary and layer what's underneath by how cold it is and how active I am--fleece jacket, fleece…
  • My hands get painfully cold only when it's well below freezing (like today, high of 10F) and my core gets chilled. I don't run, but I clean my horses' paddocks every day, no matter the weather, so I am doing mild exercise outdoors and handling cold tool handles. I wear a pair of Head Digital Sport running gloves (from…
  • I had acid reflux/heartburn so bad I was taking both omeprezole and ranitidine. Once I started losing weight with a Primal/paleo eating plan, limiting carbs to 100g/day, and eliminating wheat, it went away completely (gone for 3 years). Now, it only bothers me slightly if I eat too many carbs or wheat, so I know it wasn't…
  • Campari tomatoes, mushrooms, avocados, Romaine lettuce, freezer ready 6-packs of chicken parts (thighs, tenderloins, breasts), seasonal fruit, Jarlsberg Swiss and Coastal cheddar, eggs, Kirkland bacon, Jimmy Dean natural sausage, salmon, butter, sour cream, cream, coconut oil, almond flour, frozen berries. I've been…
  • I make a crustless Quiche Lorraine that I eat for brunch most days. Keeps well in refrigerator and a portion reheats in a minute or less. Sometimes I just take it along cold. Whisk together: 6 eggs 1 1/2 cup heavy cream 1/4 tsp sugar (optional, helps with browning) 1/2 tsp salt 1/8-1/4 tsp cayenne pepper Stir in: 1/3 cup…
  • Most important--boots that are comfortable, sturdy, and fit well, and a sock combination that prevents blisters (I use a thin wool sock turned inside out next to my foot and a heavier wool sock over it for cushioning). Take the time to break them in wearing them around the house and in the neighborhood before you head out…
  • I used "Math-It" by Elmer Brooks to teach and drill my homeschooled daughters (who had very different learning styles) in addition, subtraction, and multiplication. The book teaches the "tricks" to help the child figure out the answers, and the game provides practice and improves speed. It's not computer-based, and not…
  • If you have room in your freezer, make meat entrees (baked chicken--whole or pieces, braised or crockpot beef or pork recipes) or casseroles (like lasagne) with 4-6 servings. You can make a couple recipes on your day off and have dinner meals for a week or more. Make something different each week, and you will have a…
  • I eat crustless quiche made with eggs, cream, Swiss cheese, bacon, and onion, every day. Make it once a week, refrigerate, and reheat in the microwave or take with me if I will be away from home at brunch time (10-noon)--just as good cold as warm. A 1/6 serving of my recipe is about 425 calories and 3 gm of carbs, and…
  • I make a pieplate-sized crustless quiche cut into six servings, and it lasts just fine refrigerated for the 6 days it takes to use it up. Experiment with freezing just one of your quiche muffins to see if it changes texture, before you freeze a whole batch.
  • I use it in place of rice, pasta, or noodles in beef vegetable or chicken soup. I've also subbed it for cooked rice in a broccoli/cheese/chicken casserole. I really like the subtle flavor it adds.
  • If you have access to a microwave at work, make several entrees that freeze well and portion them for your lunches. Some of the entrees I froze were zucchini lasagne, baked chicken thighs, beef pot roast, also a salmon portion will thaw in your lunch bag and be ready to microwave at lunchtime. Then you can grab your…
  • Basic dinner salad for me (in addition to a protein entree) is chopped romaine, tomato, avocado, and mushrooms. If I add half a chopped mandarin orange, a quarter of a chopped pear or apple, or chopped pickled beets, I don't even need to use dressing. Something about the little bit of healthy sweetness raises the taste…
  • We have always provided plain white salt blocks for our horses, in addition to putting a tablespoon or so of salt in their daily beet pulp/alfalfa pellet mashes. Horses need salt, usually more than they can get by just licking a salt block, so unless Jackson is eating a 4 lb. block in a week, he's probably ok and making up…
  • Hooray! Glad things are working out. Enjoy!
  • To eat lower carb, you don't have to eliminate fruit, but you do have to limit it to one or two medium-sized servings a day, depending on your carb macro goal.
  • I vote for either a traditional or holiday food from your culture that has general appeal and that you've made before (a party isn't the time to experiment with an unfamiliar recipe) or a favorite dish/food that fits your eating plan. If you have a specialty, bring that. If it's tasty, people will eat it.
  • I cover the cut part of the avocado with the empty skin of the part I just used and store in a sealed plastic zipper bag. Stays acceptable for two or three days. Don't know why it works, but it does.
  • I hate cooking for breakfast/brunch, so I make a crustless quiche (any recipe you like) once a week and heat a portion in the microwave. For me, easy and yummy trumps variety. It's a controlled portion, full of good fats and protein, and low carb.
  • Once I had lost 20 lbs. or so, I carried something that weighed that much up and down the stairs a couple of times to give myself a concrete understanding of the difference the weight loss had made. These days, every time I haul a 50 lb. bag of horse feed, I remind myself that I used to carry more than that ON my body, and…
  • I lost 5 lbs. Of course, at 210, it didn't really show, but it gave me the mental boost to know I was finally onto an eating plan that worked and was satisfying (primal/paleo and <100g carb/day).
  • I use about 1/4 to 1/3 of an avocado daily in my dinner salad. I've had good luck putting the empty peel back over the cut portion of the avocado and storing in a small ziplock baggie in the refrig. Keeps decently until I get it used up.
  • Check out marksdailyapple.com for low carb ideas. I eat crustless quiche (made with eggs and real cream) every day, because I want a quick, easy breakfast. Otherwise, eggs, bacon, sausage. Lunch and dinners--romaine lettuce salad topped with a variety of vegetables and a simple entree of chicken, fish, beef, or pork.…
  • I make a crustless quiche (use any recipe you like) for a 400 calorie, low-carb meal. It takes a few minutes to prepare, about 45 minutes to bake. It keeps in the fridge for the 6 days it takes to use it up--I have it for breakfast every day, warmed up 45-60 seconds in the microwave. Good cold, too. I also make 6 or so…
  • My horse, who is coming back from an injury that happened during the snowy weather (and destroyed his canter--he cross-canters, as well), does the same thing, especially on his weaker, stiff side. One exercise suggested by a dressage instructor is to put a ground pole in the canter circle, because it makes the horse…
  • I set my carbs manually at a % that gives me 100 g/day at my average daily calorie intake (including exercise calories). Fat and protein will be at increased percentages. MFP default values has carbs too high and fat and protein too low. If you have an eating plan that works, modify MFP macros to match.
  • 100 g/carbs/day is effective if you are also watching your calorie intake. BUT, you will likely have to give up or limit bread, cereal, starchy vegetables, and pasta to make it work. Focus on good fats, salad veggies, meat, dairy, and eat fruits in moderation. At 100g carbs, there is still room for small treats. Check out…
  • I've been taking a biotin supplement (5000 mcg) for about the last two years. My nails were quite brittle and often split, and they have improved back to normal. I found out that taking acid reducers for GERD interferes with biotin absorption, so thankfully I don't have to use them anymore. We also give our horses a biotin…
  • Several recent NSVs that have made me really happy-- I'm wearing the size 28 breeches that originally belonged to my teenaged daughter. I've regained enough core strength and balance to trail ride with my bareback pad or English saddle, instead of only using my very secure Bob Marshall treeless endurance. Cantered…
  • I used Primal/paleo (marksdailyaple.com) as a guide for my lower carb food plan. I lost 70 lbs. in a year, 50 lbs. in the first five months keeping carbs <100g/day. I had steady weight loss without deprivation or hunger. My exercise was just walking and yardwork (hate gym-type exercise). When I hit my goal, I relaxed the…
