  • I found that stretching, as well as rolling a wooden dowel under my foot in the morning as well as before and after exercising (or whenever it felt sore) helped a lot. It used to be a big problem for me, but doesn't bother me anymore.
  • Oh, just a bit. :) Just bought a house with a workshop, so I'll finally be able to start tinkering with a few ideas I've had. Plus, we have a Steampunk convention coming up soon here in San Diego.
  • Terry Pratchett's Discworld series! If you're looking for clever, funny writing set on a flat planet that sits on the backs of four elephants who stand on a giant turtle that swims through space, I'd say Discworld is your cup of tea. :) Seriously, though, it's really REALLY good.
  • For the first six months, I was a stickler for remaining under my calories EVERY DAY. After that, I decided that as long as my average for the week is still under, I'm still under. That allows me to have bad days (or special occasions, etc.) and not kick myself, because I know I can hit the treadmill tomorrow and balance…

  • Terry Pratchett's Discworld series is fantastic. It's smart, funny satire (and there are dozens of books in the series, broken into several sets of recurring characters and a few one-offs). My favories are the City Watch books, as well as the two Moist von Lipwig books, but a truly great introduction to Pratchett is the…
  • I find that my muscles are at their sorest two days after my workouts. However, if I eat a banana an hour or so before I work out, the soreness is cut down by about 90%. It has made all the difference! Give it a try and see what you think.
  • If I understand your question correctly, you can do it under Cardio. Just look for "Strength training (weight lifting, weight training)" and enter the amount of time spent. It'll do the rest.
  • Yep, same here. If I still have them, my portions are so much smaller than they used to be. At Ruby's Diner, I would eat a hamburger, french fries, strawberry shake and a coke, and finish the whole thing. The last time I went there, I left half the hamburger, 2/3rds of the fries, and didn't order the shake at all. AND... I…
  • I'd be really curious to hear how that goes. I have mine with two teaspoons of agave nectar and a dash of salt (190 calories total), but I'm always looking for something new.
  • Another from 'sunny' San Diego. This is a great program! I'm down 21 lbs so far, so I can speak from experience that it works. Welcome!
  • Wow, make that three for S.D...
  • Evening grazing is my weak spot, too. I keep fruit in the fridge in case I want to munch. You'd be surprised how refreshing a cold navel orange, apple or some grapes can be, with not nearly as many calories as what you might otherwise munch on. At the very least, start with a piece of fruit. It'll fill you up, and you'll…
  • Just pick an easy pace for your weight loss, like a pound a week. Remember, you're not just trying to lose weight, you're retraining yourself when it comes to food. You'll quickly learn where your weak points are (mine was/is grazing in the evenings; now I keep some fruit in the fridge and have that until I'm full), and…
  • Yep, along with Massive Attack, Supreme Beings of Leisure, Bitter:Sweet, Morcheeba, Hooverphonic, The Golden Palominos, Nouvelle Vague and a host of others... :) (Fortunately, here in San Diego we have FM94/9's Big Sonic Chill, which plays exactly this kind of music. You can even listen online at fm949sd.com...)
  • I get red seedless grapes, navel oranges and/or apples and put them in the fridge. Not only do they last longer, but they make a great (and quick) snack. Something about eating them cold makes it feel more like dessert as well.
  • I find that looking up the calories in a sweet treat makes it less sweet. I also don't like to have it staring at me from my Recent Foods, reminding me that I just HAD to have it...
  • Speaking from the distant future (37), let me say you're doing the right thing by getting your diet in shape now, before your new job drops your activity level while adding all sorts of snacks, co-worker birthdays, etc., as daily temptations. It'll be much easier to do it and establish good habits now than in a decade or…
  • Wow! That's really cool! Well done, sir!
  • I agree with Nicolegetsfit, you're doing great! If you're worried about being over on sugar, don't be. Two apples in a day puts you over their calculation for sugar, so I ignore it myself. You're under on calories, fat, sodium... your diet looks really good!
  • Yep. I find I feel full quicker during meals, as well. There are meals I used to finish, like a hamburger, fries and soda, and now I leave a third of the hamburger and half the fries. (All within my calories for the day, of course. :D ) I'm just not that hungry. I love it, because one thing I was worried about was the…
  • You don't mention if you're using the incline on the treadmill. It's a great way to add calories to your workout. I burn about 840 calories in an hour at 15% incline and 4.2 mph on mine.
  • Well, I'm not from the UK (though I do love Doctor Who, Terry Pratchett, Spaced and a host of other British fare), but I'm 5'7" and trying to lose about 30 pounds. I've been using MFP for eight weeks (just into Week 9 now) and lost over 13 pounds. I've learned a lot about why, when and what I (used to) eat, and what kind…
  • I keep some navel oranges in the refrigerator. They make a wonderful, filling snack, and at just 90 calories, it's an unusual day that I don't have enough calories left over to enjoy one when I'm hungry.
  • I keep hearing 1,200 as the 'magic number' for not falling into "starvation mode", so I think 'eating your exercise calories' is just to make sure you're still over 1,200 (and not hungry). My weight loss had stopped after I had been down almost 1,000 calories from my goal (itself 500 under maintenance), so I spent a week…
  • Just wanted to add my support to what everyone else is saying. Being committed to your daily goals is great, but recognizing that life is by it's very nature inconvenient, you have to allow for special occasions. Enjoy your night out (in retrospect) and get back on that horse again! :D

  • I know my muscles retain water for a good day after a workout. And for soreness (or to prevent it), I eat a banana a couple of hours before working out. It takes about 98% of the pain out of the next two days! Something about having potassium in your system when you damage the muscles. In any case, it works for me.
  • I can't speak to intervals between workouts, but I do have a tip for soreness: potassium. Apparently, having it in your system when you work out helps with soreness. I started out getting horribly sore after visiting the trainer (particularly the second day after!) when a friend recommended eating a banana afterwards. I…
  • Some else asked how others were 'doing it', so I'm reposting what I said there: "I get 1,720 calories per day in order to lose a pound per week. (I figure I can do at least that much; anything more is a bonus.) I've found that as far as eating goes, adding some fruits and vegetables to my daily routine has made a huge…
  • Okay, let's see... First off, I'm a guy, but that shouldn't matter. I'm 5'7", looking to lose about 37 pounds. I've only been doing this for about three weeks, but I'm down 6.2 pounds so far. I get 1,720 calories per day in order to lose a pound per week. (I figure I can do at least that much; anything more is a bonus.)…
