  • I make a smoothie for breakfast, very simple -- 1 banana, 1 cup of frozen mixed berries, 1 cup of milk, 1 cup of low-sugar yogurt.
  • Dannon light & fit vanilla greek yogurt is my favorite. I'm diabetic, so I have to watch for sugar content, and this only has 7g per serving -- most flavored yogurts have around 30 or more. i use it in smoothies and as a snack with granola.
  • There are sodium-free seasoning mixes, like Mrs. Dash, and also some sodium-free marinades too. And yes deli meats have a horrifying amount of sodium. I mostly stick to peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for lunch...even though each slice of bread has like 200 mg of sodium.

  • A few months ago, sick of salad dressings that had enough calories and sodium to make my salads unhealthier than mac and cheese, I discovered Bolthouse Farms dressing. It's yogurt-based, so it's creamy (which I like better than vinaigrette), but it's very low-calorie. The honey mustard dressing is also very low in sodium,…
  • I live in DC too...I've been on here since last summer. I've lost some weight, but I have a long way to go...the best thing is to log everything daily. It'll help you spot eating trends that are preventing you from losing weight. Add me if you like :-)
  • The texture is different depending on which kind of oats you use and how you cook it. Quick-cooking or instant oats in the microwave turn oatmeal into an unappetizing, gummy mass. I buy bulk rolled oats and cook them on the stove. 1 cup of water, boiling, with 1/2 cup of oats, cook for 5 minutes. It has a nice, chewy…
  • This is something I saw on Rachael Ray's show and tried it out, and it was fantastic: Let the bananas ripen and soften, until the peels have plenty of spots on them. (pure yellow bananas freeze so hard you won't be able to eat them) Peel the bananas, cut them in half, stick a popsicle stick or wooden skewer into the…
  • Yes, kind of. My financial problems stem directly from the horrible diet I had several years ago (and still do somewhat now) by eating out at restaurants all the damn time...I have to spend like 20% of my income to pay that off. Sigh.
  • Broke my wrist during an absolutely awful bicycle crash on my 23rd birthday...but I didn't realize it was broken until a week later. Also slammed the front door on my ring fingertip...I don't think anyone in the history of humanity has ever sworn as much as I did for the next five minutes. HOLY CRAP IT HURT. Somehow, I…
  • Low-sodium V8 juice, easiest way to get a day's worth of veggies in. I used to loathe the flavor and drain it as quickly as possible and immediatley follow it up with water to rinse out the taste, but I've grown to almost like it.
  • I'm not a vegetarian AT ALL, but my breakfast and lunch is typically vegetarian...I eat convenient foods at my office for breakfast and lunch...breakfast is plain quick-cooking oatmeal with brown sugar and cinnamon and a banana. Lunch is a homemade walnut butter and jelly sandwich on whole wheat with an apple and V8…
  • Your heart rate increases in hot temperatures, that's why.
  • You can see all the Warhammer 40K books here: http://www.spuler.us/40k/ They're based on a tabletop game developed in the UK, which I have never played, but I love the books. If you happen to live near DC, I'd be happy to lend you a couple to get you started :-) And I think all my old X-Men and Marvel cards are still home…
  • I have about 230 more lbs. to lose (I've lost 20 so far...when I do my weekly weigh-in in the morning, hopefully 25!!). Feel free to add me, anyone :-)
  • I've read more than 80 Star Wars novels (I lost count), and I'm approaching my 60th Warhammer 40K novel...all the Warhammer ones I've read just since the beginning of this year (or February or March, I forgot). And I'm currently looking forward to spending my weekends watching the old '90s X-Men animated series streaming…
  • Vic, Vic, Vic!!!
  • You can do it! And there is a bright side...you started it 150 lbs lighter than me! (Yeah, my peak weight was 486 a few weeks ago).
  • And I thought I was weird for having a gag reflex to the crunch of vegetables (which is slowly going away), but y'all are way weirder than me!
  • I'm not a vegan or vegetarian (although sometimes I eat tempeh instead of chicken in my stir-fries, if I'm cooking for a vegetarian friend), but since I've been keeping my food diary on here I've noticed how much protein whole grains contain. Switching to whole wheat bread and brown rice should help a lot. And if you're…
  • Beef Panang Curry with brown rice.
  • I use tamari/soy sauce since I usually have veggies and rice together in stir fries, but even the reduced-sodium ones have wayyy too much sodium.

  • Burgers (whole wheat buns!), beer, chips. And I have no idea what other people will bring tomorrow.
  • Well tomorrow I'll be having a few burgers, chips, and beers for sure. But hey, I don't get to grill every day (or even every weekend).
  • Excess sodium is a problem, especially when you eat processed foods. Sugar is something I'm not as worried about on here, since the amounts include good sugars in milk and fruit. If you eat too much sodium, I would suggest drinking some extra water.
  • How about brown rice? Delicious, whole grain. And thankfully Whole Foods sells it pre-cooked in frozen bags...you just need to microwave it for a couple minutes, instead of boiling it for an hour.
  • Michael Pollan's In Defense Of Food is good.
  • Awesome! I look forward to the day when I can fit in a XL or XXL shirt...currently I wear 5-6 XL.
  • I suppose you could say I had an eating disorder, but at the opposite end of the spectrum. I would not stop eating -- either I would never feel full, or I wouldn't care that I felt full and kept eating. I finally topped out at 486 lbs. a few weeks ago...but since then, have lost 14 lbs. And a strange thing happened to me…
  • Yeah I noticed that milk has a lot of sugar too, I never thought about it. I'd basically ignore the sugar you get from fruits though, only try to count sugar from processed foods or sugar that you add yourself.
  • Download the Pandora app to your phone and customize your own radio station (all for free!) I personally like to work out to metal and hard rock.
