How Far Can You Run?
What is the furthest distance you have ever run without stopping? One day when i was in the army, the commander had a wild hair up his *kitten* for some reason and made us run 10 miles that morning. We only ever ran 4 or 6 miles in that unit, and about 2 thirds of the soldiers did not make that distance. I was one of the…

Why Not Flat Foot Strike?
There is much debate over heel striking, mid foot striking, forefoot striking, etc... I am basically a flat foot striker. Depending if I'm going up or down hill, my heel or forefoot may touch the ground first, but either way it goes right to the flat foot, and that is where the actual impact is. I try to run with good…

Running With Barefoot Running Shoes
Anyone ever try this? I am not talking about minimalist running shoes either, I'm talking about barefoot running shoes. The difference is that minimalist shoes have a mid sole, and barefoot running shoes have only an in sole and an out sole. An example would be Merrell Vapor Glove (barefoot), and Merrel Trail Glove…

Losing Weight Without Logging
I have been maintaining pretty good over the past couple years without logging any food. I did log for the first couple years and lost about 60 lbs, and used that time to teach myself how to eat better, and once I did that, I could maintain without logging. I still want to lose another 25 lbs, and wanted to see if I could…

Summary Of My Half Marathon Training Plan
introduction I recently completed the Hal Higdon Novice 1 Half Marathon Training Plan. I did not compete in any races, but I followed the plan (for the most part), and my final scheduled run was 13.1, which I did a 13.57 mile run. About me I am a 61 year old male. Height 5’8”, weight 185 lbs., MHR 170 (Garmin), LTHR 147…

Hal Higdon 10k Training Program: Novice (Progress Thread)
This program was recommended to me by @dewd2 and i decided to give it a try. I never have done any type of structured program before, so i'm kind of excited about this. My goal is to be able to run 10k, and also improve my time on 5k. It seems like this program will do both (if i can do it). All runs will be low intensity,…

Leg Rigidity While Running
This is kinda hard to explain, but something I noticed yesterday while running. Toward the end of my run I started keeping my legs more rigid upon impact than I normally do, and it seemed to require much less effort per stride because my knees, hips, and ankle joints where not bending as much with each impact. It was like…

2018 The Year Of Nike
Nike put out some great shoes in 2018, and in my opinion, crushed all other shoe manufacturers. I own well over 30 pair of running shoes. Nike Brooks Hoka One One Saucony Merrell On New Balance And others. I have never been a Nike guy, but that has changed in 2018. My top 2 shoes currently are... Nike Air Zoom Air Pegasus…

Metronome App For Running
Has anyone ever used a metronome app for running? I downloaded one on my phone to try it out. You can hear it through the headphones along with the music, and set it for any cadence you want. At first I thought it would interfere with being able to enjoy the music at the same time, but it doesn't. Pretty cool tool I think.

Do You Walk Before You Actually Start Running?
When I do a run with my Garmin, I bring up the run activity. While the GPS is finding the position and what knot, I do a little light stretching, and rotate my joints and stuff. I start the run activity, but I walk for about a mile or so just to work out all the little kinks before I actually start running. I walk from my…

Garmin fenix 5x Or Garmin Forerunner 935
I have both of these, but have been torn between which one I like better. The F5x has full maps which is handy for certain situations and has the sapphire glass. The FR 935 is only half the weight, is much more comfortable to wear, and the battery last quite a bit longer between charges than the F5x. Also the GPS tracks…

Slowest Runner Contest
Lets have a contest to see who is the slowest runner. I think I am the slowest runner on planet earth, and damn proud of it... :) Here is todays 3.5 mile run... Splits 1 & 3 are walking for warm up & cool down, and split 2 is the actual run. Even snails laugh at me as they are passing me... :) Post your slow runs and see…

What Type Of Running shoes Do You Like?
I don't mean brand or model, but the type of shoes. max/moderate/low/minimal cushioning neutral/stability/motion control flexible/stiff heel toe drop I have 32 pairs of running shoes. I used to prefer the more cushioned ones, but lately i have been leaning more toward the less cushioned, neutral, flexible shoes. Heel toe…

Training Plan Worksheet
I started a training plan and created a worksheet to track my progress. There is a row for "Plan' and "Actual" for each week, and a "Zone" column for each day. Under the plan i laid out the RPE and corresponding HR zones for people who use that. Fill the "Plan" values in and the "Zones" they should be done in As you do the…

OK... Teach Me About "Perceived Exertion" And Pace
I am trying to learn about using perceived exertion and using pace to gauge intensity. I still intend to check my HR once in a while to see what it is at different levels of my perception, but i am finding information on perceived exertion and pace is somewhat confusing. some say you should be able to hold a full…

Question About When I First Start Running
When i first start running on a run, i feel a lot more out of breath for about 5 to 10 minutes. After that i feel fine, like i can have a conversation. I am assuming that it is just because my heart and lungs are adjusting to running, but just want to make sure that it's normal. I am trying to learn this "perceived…

Questions For Those Who Monitor Their Heart Rate while Exercising
Although perceived effort is a fairly estimate of intensity, I prefer to monitor my heart rate during exercise in conjunction with how i feel. Sometimes i feel like i'm working harder that i actually am, and sometimes i feel like i'm not working as hard as i actually am. Using heart rate, there is no doubt, and using heart…

Who Is Afraid Of The Scale
Just wondering because i see a lot of posts about folks who dread weighing themselves. I jump on my scale multiple times per day. when i get up after i go to the bathroom before i eat after i eat before i work out after i work out before i go to bed It teaches me how my weight is affected by my day. Nothing to be afraid of…

Need Some Advice On Cadence
I have been running for going on a year now, and i think my best mile pace is something like 10:15 (running the entire mile). I know that's not good, but when i first started running i could only run for about 30 seconds. I can run 5 miles non stop now, but my average pace for 5 miles is 14:00 to 15:00. I also do a lot of…

How Many Days Do You Exercise?
I exercise 7 days a week, and do at least 1 recorded (Garmin device) activity per day. This includes recovery activities. My least intense activity would be a 1.5 to 3 mile power walk, and my most intense activity would be a 10+ mile trail run (running and power walking) where i am in zone 4 and 5 for most of the activity.…

Is Anyone Else Old School?
About 4 years ago i was obese and pathetically out of shape. I had a pretty serious health scare during pre-screening for a surgery (for diverticulitis). Long story short... COPD & a heart attack at some point in time. I survived the surgery, but was told that if i did not start exercising, lose weight, and quit smoking,…

Who Says You Can't Get A Cardio Just From Walking?
I hear a lot of people say that you can't get a cardio from just walking. Here is a power walk i did today... Not a great cardio, but still a fair cardio. I also do a 7.3 mile course that is very hilly and get my HR up to zone 4 and 5 in some spots.

If You Are Looking For A New Garmin
check out the new Garmin Instinct... Garmin Instinct It has many of the features of their higher end devices for less than half the price. I had mine for a few days now, and now my fenix 5x ($650.00) is sitting in the drawer. Lighter, smaller, more comfortable, rugged (built to mil standards), and so far pretty darn…

Running Mechanics
I notice when I try to run, and as soon as my foot hits the ground with a slightly bent knee, I bend my knee further to reduce the impact, and then push it almost straight again to move myself forward. This seems to take a lot more energy, and it don't take long before my HR is in zone 4/5 and my breathing is labored. Also…
