Brittle diabetes?
I heard this phrase used a few times by a paramedic as well as other diabetics. Apparently, it's when you have diabetes caused by trauma to your pancreas. It's also been called Type 3C diabetes. The treatment is the same as type 1. I take insulin, but not a lot because my pancreas is still making a little, but my body…

My A1C results from yesterday
I'm so excited. My A1C from yesterday's blood tests is 5.6%, technically non-diabetic. I have been exercising and watching what I eat more than ever because of chronic pancreatitis. I'm kinda hoping this is permanent and not just because my pancreas mis-behaves a lot. Just thought I'd share.

If you use 2 types of insulin...
Have you ever mixed them up? Last night, I was injecting my long acting insulin before bed, when I realized it was my rapid acting insulin pen. I used the same dose I would have used for the long acting. So, I took a couple of glucose tablets, drank half a juice box. Then I injected my long acting and went to bed. Just in…

High sugars and mood?
Can high blood sugar effect your mood? I have been off the rails lately when it comes to my food choices, so much so, I don't share my diary because I'm just too embarrassed. But, whether it's my blood sugar or food, I get to feeling depressed. Then I have crappy food, then I feel depressed. It's a vicious circle. Another…

Left over insulin
I use an insulin pen for mealtime insulin and long acting insulin. They have to be replaced every 28 days and 42 days respectively. Sometimes, there is still insulin in the pen. I hate to throw it in the garbage, but I was told not to put it in my sharps container. What do you guys/gals do with the leftover insulin in your…

Extreme low yesterday and fasting today for a test
Yesterday, after a day of shopping and having lunch at the mall (all crappy choices) I didn't eat supper. During the night my blood sugars went to 1.4(25.27). I had juice and a glucose tablet. It took awhile, but my sugars finally went up and I felt it was safe to go to bed. This morning, they were a little higher than I…

Food stacking
I have chronic pancreatitis as well as Type3C diabetes which was caused by trauma to my poor old pancreas. While on the National Pancreas Association website, it was suggested to do what they call Food Stacking. I'll try to explain it as best I can, as I understand it. If you're only allowed to have 20 grams of fat per…

IS My fitness pal more concerned with weight loss than overall health?
HI. I use myfitnesspal to track my foods and drink since I am diabetic and have to know the amount of carbs and fibre are in my meals. I've noticed that there are a lot of articles about weight loss. Now, I know if you're heavy, you may not be as healthy as you could be, but not always. My sister, who is overweight doesn't…

Chronic pancreatitis and diabetes.
Hi. I haven’t posted here in quite awhile, because things were going pretty well. Because of an error during a routine gallstone removal, I have to deal with chronic pancreatitis and diabetes. The latest flare has lasted nearly two months, one day terrible pain, then fluids, a few days pain free, repeat. I saw my…

Added sugar vs natural sugar
Here in Canada, our labelling shows sugars, but not necessarily just added sugar. I know there are sugars in fruit and veggies naturally. My big question is, does MFP calculate your daily grams using both sugars or just one or the other?

Finding calorie burn for walking in trails
Does anyone know a good website to figure this out? I love to walk in the forest, with a backpack of about 5 to 7 pounds. The trail has it's ups and downs, around rocks and roots. It's not like a hike going up mountains or with a constant change in elevation. For now, I use the hike/cross country on MFP to calulate the…

I've lost focus
on my health and diabetes. I think I'm just burned out from always counting carbs, feeling guilty if I have a little more fat than the doctor ordered. Other than high fasting blood sugar in the morning(it gets within range after being awake two hours), there doesn't seem to be any consequences. I haven't gained any weight,…

I just researched this pancreas divism. Are you having episodes of pancreatitis and that's why they're checking? If you do have this, what is the treatment? Will they operate to correct it? I'm curious because after three years of pancreatic fistulas and pancreatitis, they finally found where the fistula was and operated…

Carbs and diet
I've seen all kinds of things on here about low carb, high fat diets. That's out of the question for me because of the high fat component. But, can you get enough carbs if you were to limit your diet to just veggies? Not the starchy ones, just the others. Wouldn't you have to have a truckload of veggies every day? I'm just…

Ralflott - types of diabetes
It's funny you mentioned that in a previous discussion. Because of the damage to my pancreas from an error, my surgeon said I'm considered to have chronic pancreatitis(that should be over now), but also a type 3 diabetic, because it was caused by a trauma to my pancreas. Just like someone who may have damaged their…

Blood type diet, farce or fact?
My daughter just e-mailed me to say she has joined a gym and they are working out a menu based on her blood type. She needed to know what her type was. So, I did some checking. According to this, she would only be able to eat the things she doesn't really like. Mainly vegetarian, whole grains, and whatever spirulina is. I…

So here's the latest and greatest and LAST update...
about my three year adventure with pancreatitis and fistulas. I had surgery on November 9, 2016. They didn't have to take out my spleen or any of my pancreas, They found where the hole was and sewed it to my small intestine. The doctor did tell me that 80% of my pancreas has atrophied because of the inflammations cutting…

Bathroom scales
I am totally frustrated with my scale. I bought a Weight Watchers scale last year. I changed the batteries about 2 months ago because it was starting to act wacky. I would step on it and it would go from 0 to 220 to 150 within 30 seconds. So, since my surgery, my doctor said to weigh myself twice a week to make sure I'm…

Can anyone tell me ...
Why having dry skin is not good for diabetics? I get the whole, watch your feet, especially if you can't feel them. And I understand that diabetics may take longer to heal. I just don't understand the dry skin.

Fishing for compliments here
How do you like my new do? Thought I get it cut before my hospital stay. First picture, old do. Second lecture, the new.

Resistance bands
I was looking at the various strength training exercise lists. What do they mean by 'pulley'? And would you equate this to a resistance band? If not, what would you equate it to? Lifting 5lb free weights? I'm just getting back into this kind of exercise, so any help would be, well helpful.

Biopsy results in Ontario
Some of you have seen my status updates, others know my story with my pancreas problems. I got a call from the hospital that I am going for an endoscopic ultrasound biopsy on my pancreas tomorrow. I had no idea there was a need for a biopsy. I'm kinda hoping this is just normal procedure before my pancreas surgery. Has…

Night sweats
Last night I forgot to take my evening meds. So, during the night, I woke up and my bed felt so wet, it was like I peed the bed. My pillow was soaked. It's been really hot here, but with a fan facing the bed, it's okay. It's not menopause because I went through that 20 years ago and haven't had symptoms for years. Is this…

Post party
And feeling good. I think the preparing with a few days of fluids did the trick. And, even though I could have last year, this year I did eat as many munchies, and the ones I did have were veggies, shrimp and just a bit of seven layer dip. One burger, one devolved egg, a bit of my sister's potato salad, and a bit of…

So, here's the complicated version...
Of what the doctors told me yesterday. As it turns out, the pancreatic fistula is not at the tail of my pancreas, but more toward the middle, closer to the head. The drain goes under my colon to the outside of my left side. The surgery would remove all the damaged pancreas starting where the drain is. Since it's impossible…

I'm confused by some of your readings
It seems to me that anything below 90 is considered low blood sugar, yet some of you seem disappointed when you have a reading of 101. In Canadian terms 90 is 5, normal. 101 is 5.6, also a great reading. Are some of you getting dangerously low with morning readings of 66 and 72's. Aren't you worried?

So here's N interesting development
I've been in pain to varying degrees for two weeks. I'd like to say it was something I ate, but I have no idea anymore. SO, I've also have a weird burning sensation on my left side near the drainage scar and pseudo cyst. The doctor today said, they'll take another ct scan to see if it's growing again. Then, finally, a more…
