Back after a 10 year absence!
It is good to be back after a long absence! Work was sucking the life out of me, enormous stress eating, 80 lbs over suggested BMI Well, that's over! Now I have time to be a caregiver to family members, take care of myself, and actually do things I like! I'm in the middle of a 5 day fast. So far, so good.

Made it to Onederland!
Onederland! And I am NEVER leaving it again. Today for the first time in over 5 years I'm under 200 lbs. That's 35 lbs down since July, only 20 lbs left to the first milestone of 180 lbs. After that, these fitness milestones are planned for next year - first pull up and first 100 mile bicycle ride.

trying an extended fast
I'm half way through a 5 day fast. First try at fasting, and like others have said, on the 2nd day I'm not hungry. It helps that my work is very sedentary, plus house chores and yardwork. I'm following guidelines to have at least 3 liters of water per day. I had some alcohol, and boy did that make me tired like never…

What would you rather be doing than MFP?
What would you like to do with your extra time? Play with the kids? Date your spouse all over again? Have hobbies? Volunteer time and skills? Become a triathlete at 70 years old? Let's pretend you, me, and we finally had it under control. Weight gain, weight loss, proper exercise, we have it all down to unbreakable habits.…

Office parties and moderation?
There is a lot of pressure to participate in the office party, darn near necessary for office politics. It is also expected people should do lots of drinking and overeating. Some people enjoy that. Simply saying "No thank you, I don't want any." is looked at as a social faux pas. How do you handle parties, keep to your…

Snow! One hour, one inch - and more
I was fussing outside and came in to log stuff on MFP. Looked outside and et voila! Our area might get 12 inches, a pittance compared to Buffalo, significant for Massachusetts. We might not like it but our Siberians and the Labrador are laying out there happily getting covered.

Learning the hip hinge?
Has anyone else needed to break down the movements into the smallest parts before progressing? Anybody else feel their low flexibility is a barrier to be corrected before even beginning lifts? Noob here, and just yesterday I learned about the 'Hip hinge" Stronglifts 5x5 were suggested by many people so I have been trying…

confused about proper heart rate
Should I be paying attention to heart rate or just the way I feel? I'm 60 years old and just two months into exercise after a 3 year hiatus. The max heart rate is supposed to be 160 (220-age) but it is almost impossible to break 150 BPM - the legs get tired before I get winded. Supposedly I should be doing aerobic workouts…

CNN is looking for success stories
First, I don't have any connection with CNN, I just read it occasionally. CNN has a weekly feature about weight loss, "the Weekly Weigh In" and they look for success stories. Perhaps some of you have already shared your stories. But - there are so many wonderful success stories on MFP, I bet we could overwhelm CNN. If you…

A cardio class when you are over 26 yo
Today I tried a cardio class for the first time. Most of the participants were female and under 30 yo. I felt very out of place as an older male, especially when they all started doing the exercises much faster and more skillfully than I. I almost fell over a few times doing unfamiliar moves. And I had to stop entirely…

60 years old is comin' at me like a freight train...
...and I'm stuck in the grade crossing. September 17th I will have made 60 trips around the sun. That's 585 MILLION miles, or 942 million km, just short of a billion. In case you were wondering. Somehow, 30 years went by without even noticing, except I did not trust myself anymore. At 40 there were no black balloons - it…

Beginner strength training program?
Given the restrictions below, can anyone suggest a program for this beginner? A full pattern of progression for 2 months, then re-evaluate. - Yes, I have searched the MFP and the net. If I missed something obvious on MFP, please throw me a link, - All the training programs seem to include deadlift, bench press, and pull…

Your Beef Recipes?
Here is fast and easy one I plucked off a cooking channel: Quick Braised London Broil with wine Takes 15-20 minutes while you set the table. One pan. Serving for four takes as long as a serving for one. 4 oz. lean London Broil, about 1 inch thick. 1/4 cup red wine (1/2 cup is enough if you are making 4 servings) 1/4 cup…

Scholarly article on binge eating
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2714381/ The Journal of Nutrition Title: Sugar and Fat Bingeing Have Notable Differences in Addictive-like Behavior March 2009 Reading through it, overeating sugar and fat release excess dopamine, which is a feel-good chemical in your brain. The article often uses the words…

Deep-fried alcohol - What's the worst binge food?
it's getting so i don't even want to binge - the influence of you MFP'rs is working. But if I was to go over to the Dark Side again ... What could possibly be more decadent than deep-fried alcohol? Deep fried Twinkies and Oreos are a pale candle to this beacon of clean-eating devastation. 'Course, I'd have to travel to the…

What is a negative net intake of calories?
Is a negative net calorie intake a good thing, bad thing, or it depends? Today I have been working on the house constantly. I recorded it as 'Housecleaning , light" because i could not find an equivalent. MFP calculated an overall negative calories. (This may change. The family wants to eat at cracker Barrel tonight. I…

Data mining MyFitnessPal? What would you like to see?
this site has enormous amounts of data from thousands of people. I wonder if MFP mines the data and how they might use it? What would you like to see? What state consumes the most/least daily calories? Average weight loss? by age, initial weight, region? Average consecutive logins? Most exercise? Consumption of bacon by…

Newbie here, looking for friends of a similar age
Hi all! Someone said to me that "Old" is always 20 years older than your current age. I'll go with that. This is my second time in my life -ever- trying to get fit. I was the quintessential geek all through school - with the concomitant hazings. So I never bothered to try any physical activities, ever. The first time…

Those "likes" mean a lot
Thank you to all the MFP friends who click on "like" for simple little daily accomplishments. It startled me how encouraging it is to know that someone is checking on me every day, and just saying "good job!" If you do not yet have MFP friends, reach out and ask. If you have MFP friends, post a "like" to their daily…

Starting fitness at 60 … or 50 … or 70 …
Let’s tell those 40 year old and younger kids how it is done, ‘cuz they are gonna be here soon enough! This may be the first time some of us are getting into shape - perhaps we have yo-yoed up and down for years - or we want to stick around a little longer - or we feel nasty being overweight and breathless walking around…

Gained it back - eating more when cold
I increased the calories significantly last week to stay warm and from nerves. You have to eat to compensate for heat loss. It is not the time to shave calories. I gained the few pounds lost. Meh, I get to start again. :ohwell: Last week the electricity was out for 4 days because of the snow storm in New England. That was…

Anyone with experience in HIIT cycling? I need some help.
I am wiped out for hours after a high intensity cycling session. Any advice is appreciated if you have done interval cycling. I think it is too intense, but I have no experience with this. I am out of shape for cycling or anything else. I have been working out and seeing some progress and would like to add high intensity…

one size away from high school
In high school my pants had a 36" waist. A day ago I found I fit into pants with a 38" waist. Cool.:glasses: I have started shopping at Goodwill and Salvation Army because I am dropping every two months. Drop a size, donate them back. I am also working out; at age 57 it will take longer to develop muscle. Foo. OTOH, I had…

Huh. Tracking food intake actually works.
It surprised me. I joined MFP some weeks ago and started tracking food intake. Missed a week, but I'm back on it. Now I am very conscious about that second cookie or having a last sandwich for the evening. It is working. In about 3 weeks I lost about 3 pounds. Sometimes I go over because I *want* that bagel. On average, I…
