Calories per day vs Calories per week
Which is more important to keep in check? I regularly find myself going slightly over/under my net calories for the day, but rarely missing the weekly mark by much. On a daily basis I might be as much as 300 off the mark but on a weekly I'm usually within 100.

home cooked meals are hard to log :(
Any tips out there for how to figure out made-from-scratch meals? I make nearly all of my own meals, and often make the individual components (like making gnocchi, bread, etc). I find myself guesstimating and being left really unsure of my actual calorie count, not to mention protein/carb/fat makeup.

NROL4W on Nook
Hey, I'm thinking of starting this program and want to get the book, I was thinking about getting the nook edition. I was wondering if anyone here had it on their nook and liked it - are the illustrations usable? Does anyone take their nook with them to the gym? I'm in the 'figuring out what the heck I want to do' phase,…

Kefir as a recovery drink
I'm thinking this is a pretty sound idea, any thoughts? A flavored kefir, like strawberry or peach, and maybe a banana or some nuts to go along with it. Good idea for a post workout snack?

Preparing for wisdom tooth surgery
I'm having my wisdom teeth out on Tuesday and am trying to prepare diet wise for not being able to chew. I'm a little worried I'm going to use the pain as an excuse to say pooey to my calorie goal and eat whatever I can (though I'm not real optimistic about what exactly I'll be able to eat). They're only taking two teeth…

Trying to get more protein without using supplements
I very rarely meet my protein goals - I try to eat at least 60g a day but would really like to be closer to 95, any ideas on how to increase my protein without using protein powders? My diary is open. I know that under normal circumstances a person doesn't need so much protein, but I feel that while trying to lose weight…

Daleks in Animalia
As a child I had this awesome book by Graeme Base called Animalia, it's an alphabet book where each page is a wonderfully intricate picture of things that start with that page's letter. The D page had this thing that I never knew what was, and of course totally forgot about until today when I was reading the book to a kid…

Anyone else have an organic Thanksgiving?
Our Thanksgiving feast was nearly 100% organic, and maybe 85% local. The only non-organic things I used were French's fried onions for the casserole and jet puffed marshmallows! If anyone knows of organic alternative brands, please let me know. I almost switched out the onion for organic crackers, but I so prefer those…

ANYONE getting ~100g of protein through food alone
*thanks in advance to anyone who reads through all of this!* while eating under 1350 calories? I've tried and tried, both in reality and in pre-planning days in the food diary, and unless I go to around 1800 calories I can't seem to meet that protein goal - which is one gram for every pound of lean body mass - without…

Theoretically speaking, what would happen if...
...someone who still had around 10 pounds of fat to lose started eating 100 above/below maintenance and lifting heavy? Would it be possible to slowly burn fat and even more slowly build muscle this way? Or is it really best to focus on one and then the other?

Has anyone used Y Personal Fitness at the YMCA?
I'm starting my free 12 week thing and have my first meeting with my 'coach' on Tuesday and am wondering what I should expect. Would it be smart to bring a food log? I'm definitely bringing my exercise log. What sort of questions should I expect him to ask and what should I be asking him? I want to get the most out of this…

Simple, healthy stuffed apple dessert
I'm making these on Thanksgiving, and probably on Christmas as well! Ingredients: 4 Granny Smith Apples 1 packet instant oatmeal - plain 24 dry roasted unsalted almonds 1 t bsp honey Core the center of the apples, leaving the bottom whole like a cup. Crush the almonds - suggest placing in a ziplock bag, wrapping in a…

For people that strength train in the morning
Do you find that you feel tired during the rest of your day, or does your body spring back and handle a regular day of activity? I'm trying to figure out a gym schedule, and I have an active job (nanny for 2 year olds), I can't really afford to be spent before my work day begins but I also don't have a lot of time to…

Calories burned and MFP #'s
So I know if you use a HRM or something you're supposed to subtract the calories you would have expended just by living from the ones you burned during your workout, but does MFP do that for you with the exercises you log here? Like if I tell it I walked for 45 minutes did it already subtract the calories from living for…

4 months/16 weeks til a cruise!
My boyfriend and I are going on a cruise with my mom and stepdad, possibly more family! I am over half way to my goal, only have 14 pounds left. I know it is unrealistic to stay exactly on a pound a week schedule when my goal weight is so close but am wondering how much I can realistically expect to lose. I plan to reduce…

The excuses I no longer use
I don't have the time I don't know how I can't do it by myself I don't have the right equipment/shoes/pants/insert thing here I'll have to give up too much I'll have to think about it all the time I should just be comfortable with who I am It's too cold outside It's too hot outside But I'm on my period I'll do it tomorrow…

Is this a realistic first week at the gym?
I hadn't set foot in a gym in over 8 years until I joined the YMCA last week. The day I did all my paperwork and got my initial tour I didn't have time to actually do anything. I have a 20 minute walk to get there and anotther 20 minute walk home. I'm going to start this week and this is what I'm planning on doing: Monday…

sick and STARVING
I've had flu-like symptoms for the last couple of days and have noticed a marked increase in appetite. Today was the day I felt the worst and I did practically nothing but lay in bed and sleep/watch junk tv. I wasn't eating out of boredom, but out of hunger! I figured I wouldn't worry about it too much as I didn't even hit…

walking with stroller
The exercise I find for pushing a child in a stroller says it burns 170 calories per hour while walking 3mph for an hour burns 225. I GUARANTEE I am burning more calories walking with a stroller than walking without, so what should I log?

I didn't realize I'd lost so much
I just decided to put my weights in my signature and when I had to write down my highest weight it made me realize how much I've lost already.I can't believe I lost 20 lbs! This was all before I started using MFP. It took me about a year to lose that 20 lbs, and I did it mostly through small incremental diet changes.…

How to log this
Today I bench pressed an 18 month old, 10 sets of 5 (apxm. 20 lbs) and made my lame attempts at chin ups,4 sets of 4 -mostly I just got my feet off the ground and hung there as long as I could. How should I log that? My technique is far from formal, clearly, as this is all snuck in during my regular day, but I have to…

All those unlogged calories from nibbling while cooking
I can't stop! I'm incapable! So I've been thinking about tacking on 50 calories a day just from this, is that being realistic # wise? It's not like I eat a full portion of anything, or even all together, but a bite or two of everything on the stove every 15 minutes or so... just to make sure it's good...

I keep going over my sugar intake
BUT the only sugars I regularly consume are naturally occurring ones in fruits and vegetables. It feels like if I have an apple and a banana, I'm already at my limit for the day. Is this something I should be concerned with?

Getting started with this whole 'exercise' thing
So perhaps in the past I've been a little snooty about people that go to the gym or work out or whatever. Perhaps I've had this 'bad attitude' for years now after some really unsatisfying and hurtful experiences at my college gym, the only gym I've ever gone to (and that was over 8 years ago now). But here I am,…

If I have my activity level at 'active'
Should I count the walking I do as an exercise, which would give me extra calories to consume, or should I assume MFP as worked that in for me? I walk a LOT on a daily basis, guess work with google maps has me estimating close to 15 miles on a work day; I'm a nanny in Brooklyn and I usually walk to work, plus lugging the…

Am I doing it right?
I've been trying to lose weight for about 3 months now and have had some excellent results, but I need to step up my game. Until now I've been just relying on my normal activity level for exercise (I'm a nanny and run after small children all day, push them all over in their strollers, I live in Brooklyn so I do a LOT of…

hello!
Hi! I'm a 29-year-old nanny trying to get in shape before I settle down and have some kiddos of my own. My real motivation for all of this is to be at a healthy weight going into pregnancy as that helps mitigate a lot of health problems people experience while pregnant. Also, I'd like to feel hot in a bathing suit again! I…
