beginning biker - what do i need to know?
I just recently tore my meniscus and the doctor told me to stick to bikes and elliptical from here on out. I own a bike, but that is about all I know. What tips, sites/resources, or workout plans could you offer to a newbie who wants to bike to lose weight and get fit? I would really appreciate any help. Thanks!

Need to reset
Have completely fallen off the wagon over the last several weeks. I start off the day great and by the end I have completely given up. The weight loss is slower than slow coming off and it I am completely discouraged. I want to start fresh on Monday and really kick my own *kitten* into gear, but I am not optimistic. Anyone…

Any supplements to help with knee joint pain?
I am having lots of pain in my knees. I know most of it is because I am out of shape. I played softball in college and I was diagnosed then with tendonitis in both knees, so I know that is some of it too. I do Zumba a few times a week and walk. I know the jumping in Zumba is aggravating it. Has anyone had any success with…

A Month of 400 Calorie Meals - Recipes
This is an old article from Real Simple. It is a great menu planner. Even if you don't want to cook every recipe they suggest here you could use some of them. Most recipes are very easy and quick to make. http://www.realsimple.com/food-recipes/recipe-collections-favorites/healthy-meals/400-calorie-dinners-00000000027141/…

Breakfast ideas - Low carb, no eggs
I went to the Nutritionist yesterday. Basically, she told me to keep my meals under 45g of carbs and I can only have 15 addiitonal fat grams a day (you only count items of food that have five grams of fat or more), which means if I have one egg (5 g of fat), that is a third of my fat grams! (Which is a bummer, since my…

Good fat vs. Bad fat
A very interesting and informative article on good fats vs. bad fats (and cholesterol) It was posted here back in February and came up when I did a search on diets heavy in monosaturated fats. http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/fats-full-story/ About 10 months ago, I went to a nutritionist who told me to start a…

Beginning Runner - Question for seasoned runners
Hello, Quick review: Was a multiple sport athlete from a young age through college (played DI sports). In college I was "diagnosed" with tendonitis in both knees. Had to ice and stim before and after each practice. Didn't really run again after college because knees would really hurt, so I just stuck with the…

A good meal replacment bar/shake.
Hello, Does anyone have any strong feelings, one way or the other, about adding meal replacement bars or shakes to your weight loss plan? If you do recommend them, do you have any advice/suggestions for a good one? For example, Myoplex bars. Last time I had one (around eight years ago) I would have to plug my nose while…

BAD shin splits - cardio alternative?
I have horribly bad shin splints from running (I officiate high school lacrosse). I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good cardio workout would give my shin splints a bit of a rest. Does it exist? Thanks in advance!

Suggestions for snacks?
Hello, Anyone have any suggestions for convenient snacks? I usually snack on green pepper slices, yogurt, mini babybel cheese, a handful of almonds, but that is about it and I am getting bored. I can't stand cottage cheese. I would like more protein than carbs... Any suggestions? Even if it is something I could make ahead…

Can cutting carbs hurt your weight loss efforts?
I think my body does not react well to carbs...I won't go into all of the long, boring details here, but bottom line I feel better in the mornings when I haven't had a lot of carbs the night before (otherwise I feel bloated or have an upset stomach in the morning). So I am planning on cutting bread and pasta from my diet…

Staying motivated when the weight is slow to come off?
I started off REALLY strong - was so good with what I ate and was really determined. I started losing weight but it was slow. I have struggled with losing weight in the past, so I was not super suprised that it was so slow, but was a little disappointed since this was the first time I tried losing weight without using a…

Creole Shrimp and Sausage Stew
I made this last night and it was REALLY good. I used Johnsonville Chicken Sausage (chipotle and cheese kind) and when I typed everything into MFP it did increase the nutritional numbers a bit, but it was still only 261 calories a serving. The site suggests you serve it with crusty bread or over rice, but I really didn't…

How would you count this?
I have started to officiate girl's lacrosse games. Each game will be a combination of running, walking and sprinting for one hour. How do you think I should calculate the exercise calories? I do not have, and can't afford to get one right now, one of those activity monitors. I do realize that I won't get exact calories,…

Working moms with multiple kids...how do you do it?
PLEASE share your success stories with me. I want to know how other working moms keep everyone happy: The kids, husband, job, the house and yourself. For me, one of those things usually has to give and it is always my gym visit first, then my diet. I have three kids, including a five month-old and am just plain…

Does this seem correct to you?
I posted last week about my trip to a nutritionist and I am still questioning a few things she said. Some of it makes total sense, some doesn't. I just want some feedback from people out there who have had success on MFP and just get your own opinions on the following. Basically, the jist of her message was lower carb and…

Not getting the whole "Eat more to lose more" mentality
I just read the Road Map post everyone talks about. First of all, I am confused in general, but basically according to that I should be eating close to 1900 calories a day. MFP has me at 1810 a day if I want to lose one lb a week. I never even get close to that (I probably average around 1500-1600 a day) unless I make a…

Please Analyze my Food Diary
I have gained another lb. I don't know what is happening. Would you mind looking at what I am eating and telling me what I am doing wrong? I have only gone over my calories once since January 2nd (that was this past Saturday) and I didn't log anything this past Sunday becuase I was bummed out about a gain so I just didn't…

Good Yoga DVD?

What's your favorite low sugar snack?
Yogurt, fruit, cereal - they all have a lot of sugar. What you do like to have for a snack that is low in sugar? (I am getting tired of green peppers, nuts and cheese sticks...)

So what is a "healthy" deficit?
My goal (set my MFP) is 1820 a day. I have come in under that each day and am reading on these boards that is not a good thing. I thought the fewer calories the better? So what is a healthy deficit that won't sabotage your weight loss?

Help with Oatmeal

Is water making me fat?
Since weighing myself on 12/27 I have GAINED five pounds. I didn't start monitoring calories until yesterday, but before then I was watching what I eat so wasn't going crazy. I know I did not eat enough to gain five pounds in less than a week. I am not in super freakout mode yet becuase I know I have only been serious…

Looking for 30-something friends!
Would love to find some MFP friends in their 30s! I just turned 35, have three kids and have about 45 lbs to lose. This is my first time trying MFP. I would love some other 30-somethings to support, motivate and even have a laugh with! I also LOVE to cook and try new recipes, so feel free to share those as well.…

Can I do this with food?
I have some recipes that I think are low calorie but I am not sure. Is there a function on this website that lets you type in a recipe and the number of servings it makes and then it tells you how many calories per serving you have? (Similar to what you can do on Weight Watchers). I have been trying to do it and can't…
