staying in shape while abroad (in Russia!) tips? :)
Hello!! Tips for staying in shape while studying abroad or traveling? Not so worried about food as much as I am about fitness! I'm a group ex instructor now and concerned about staying in shape in a country where I won't know the language and probably won't have access to a gym. I have some ideas (running, jumping rope,…

maintaining health/weight while studying abroad in Russia?
I hope to study abroad in Russia soon and am interested in maintaining my health. They're big on meat, cheese, bread, potatoes and that sort of thing over there- as I've eaten a predominately-vegetable, predominately vegetarian diet all of my life, I know from experience that this will leave me feeling sick and bloated...…

How much cardio do you do for maintenance?
Not loss/gain, but maintenance specifically. :) How many days per week, for how long, what type and at what intensity? I have my own routine but I wanted to hear some stories from others to see if I could switch it up a bit for kicks. If you want to mention how much/what type/how long/how intense you do your weight…

Hand pain, anybody have any ideas?
Hey there! I've been having back pain lately (though it's been feeling better since I'm pretty sure I've determined the cause; still gonna see a specialist though) and my hands have been hurting a bit, too mostly the outer sides of my pinkies and hands and occasionally some kind of soreness in the center of my wrist. I was…

DIFFICULT exercises for somebody with injured back?
Talking about abs, back and arms specifically :) Both my upper and lower back are hurting, though it's mostly upper. I think I pinched a nerve in my upper back. I'm pretty fit and get really crabby when I can't work out so I'd love some help! I'm seeing a specialist next Tuesday but I want to know what's safe for me to do…

What to eat right before a workout?
I have to eat a little something right before I work out because I work out maybe 30 minutes or so after I wake up (I have a gym at my apartment complex lol) and I don't have much time at any other part of the day. I usually eat a little bit of fruit and a small handful of whole wheat cereal or some crackers... how is…

Question about carb intake? :)
Hello! I work out quite a lot (hoping to become a certified instructor!!) and my diet, just by virtue of the things that I eat habitually, know are healthy and enjoy, tends to be lower in my apparently recommended carb consumption and higher in protein. I don't feel sluggish during my workouts or anything... does anybody…

Butternut squash with Greek yogurt? (or other suggestions)
Sooo I bought some frozen cubed butternut squash today just for the heck of it. Can I thaw it and eat it with a little Greek yogurt? Will it taste good with some butter? Or what about garlic butter? What spices would go best on it? thanks :)

Shelf-life of almond butter?
Sooo I tend to stock up on food because there are certain things that I just buy out of habit every week, regardless of whether or not my sister and I actually need them... almond butter is one of those things. As a result we've got a loooot of almond butter... the oldest one says "sell by 5/23/13," so I guess I'm good (as…

High intensity, low-impact cardio DVDs?
Hello! A while ago I strained my calf muscles and I can't do too much high-impact cardio anymore- that's running, jumping jacks, burpees... even the elliptical can hurt them. The only time of the day that I have to work out right now is really early in the mornings when no gyms or pools are open around here, so that rules…

Really simple things to do with cooked frozen shrimp?
Hi there! I got some cooked frozen shrimp (it was free at my grocery store with a $5 purchase :p ) and I'd really like to have a super simple idea as to what to put on them to make them taste good. I'm talking REALLY simple: like can I just eat them with unsalted butter, or just with salt and pepper, or just with lemon…

Baked vs microwaved sweet potato?
Hi guys! I know that microwaving a sweet potato is quicker and changes the texture, but does anybody have any strong preference as to which is better and why? Thank you!

healthy weight/lifestyle while studying abroad in Russia?
Hello!! Does anybody have any experience with this- Russia, specifically? From the people that I've spoken to, eating healthy over there is difficult but not impossible. They're really into meat, cheese, bread and potatoes, apparently, which is yucky! I've been raised on a healthy, mostly-vegetable, mostly-vegetarian diet…

Work outs for people with sore achilles tendons?
My achilles is sore... I bought some new shoe inserts today, and I'm going to vary my cardio workouts more, so hopefully that'll help. I also have a standing desk because I know that burns more calories, but I guess once the soreness is all gone I'll be standing at my desk while wearing good shoes rather than being…

Freezing fish/meat?
Hi!! I don't have a cold pack yet (I'l try to get one soon) and I'd like to be able to take some fish that I have left over on campus for me for lunch. I've got an insulated lunch box, but alas, I won't be able to get a cold pack for a while. Can I freeze fish or chicken, take it out around 7 and eat it for lunch at 11 or…

peanut butter with 2 grams of sugar per tbsp?
EDIT: 2 grams of sugar per TWO tablespoons, sorry! I'm in college and the only peanut butter that I could find on campus has two grams of sugar per two tablespoons. Of course I eat it in moderation (and usually I prefer the kind with no added sugars) but is that quite bad? I certainly don't live off the stuff.

Eating breakfast before or after you work out?
All my life I've eaten a fairly large breakfast (toast w/ nut butter and fruit w/ non-fat plain Greek yogurt) right before I work out and after I work out I drink a glass of milk or coffee with some milk, then a smaller lunch, and then maybe a snack or nothing at all for dinner. Eating before I work out has never bothered…

Freezing butter?
My mom says that it's okay to freeze cheese overnight and then pack it to take for lunch the next day because it'll thaw out and won't go bad when I eat lunch (I leave my apartment at about 7:30 and I'd probably end up eating it at about 10:30 or 11:00). Could I do the same with butter? What about vegan garlic butter? I…

involuntary all-nighter, afraid of getting fat :|
yeah... I worry a lot and I ended up accidentally worrying all night and pulling an all-nighter. This is bad because I don't really function well on a lack of sleep... but anyway, over the course of the night I found myself starving and ended up grabbing a couple tablespoons of almond butter. Basically I'm overtired and in…

can't stop worrying :(
First of all, I'm on birth control that keeps me from having my period until I get to a certain section of the pills, but I've been on it for a while now, so I don't think they're to blame. But in the past couple of weeks I've been gaining weight... well, I usually weigh around 104.5 lbs but two days ago I weighed 105.8…

Better to eat vegetables of protein before bed?
Just what I said! Should I have some cheese now and eat some carrots before bed or vice versa? Which is healthier?
-
Better to eat vegetables of protein before bed?
Basically what I said! I'm debating whether I ought to have a bit of cottage cheese now or carrots, and which one would be better before bed. I've done both and I've been alright either way, just wondering if there's a healthier option between the two :)

specific cardio/aerobic routines that don't use your feet?
Swimming, biking and rowing machines aren't options. I think I may have hurt my achilles tendon. I tried chair aerobics but didn't sweat at all... help?

I think I'm bloated after beginning a new exercise routine?
I had been doing the same routine- cardio with (what I would say was) not enough strength training, for a long while. I've added more strength-building exercises in and I'm pleasantly sore- but it's only been a couple of days and this morning I weighed 105.7, which is I guess 1.5 or 2 lbs more than my regular weight (I'm 5…

Non-perishable veggie ideas to take for lunch?
I'm in college and I live off-campus; having to go to the dining hall is just a big hassle for me so I usually go to the grocery store and find things to bring to lunch on camps. I obviously can't keep it in a refrigerator, so I have to bring non-perishable things- lately I've been bringing mixed bags of nuts with raw…

Jump rope workout?
Hi guys! My question is about a jump rope workout. Now I go to the gym pretty often and can use the machines at the gym to get my cardio, but I'm afraid that if I get a job my schedule will change and finding time to actually physically GET to the gym in between studying and rehearsing will be next to impossible. Because…
