Bedtime hunger-what to eat?
Hi all, I'm sometimes pretty hungry at bedtime, which makes it hard to sleep. I was wondering how others handle this. Are there any low calorie but satisfying foods you've found that help you through this without blowing past your daily calories? Thanks for any suggestions!

Yoni Freedhoff "Diet Fix" Approach
Hi all, I've been a sometime member, but I'm changing my approach. I'm a 49 year old woman who wants to be healthier by 50. I'm going to use Yoni Freedhoff's approach in "The Diet Fix" and I'd love to have a couple of companions along the way. Freedhoff's approach is carb-level agnostic, higher protein, based in just…

machine vs barbell vs arthritis dilemma
Hey there, I have significant arthritis in my joints, particularly my elbows and knees. I can squat more deeply, with more weight, and without distracting pain using a leg press machine. Ditto for the bench press. I keep seeing comments that machines are inferior, though, and that worries me somewhat. I do planks for ab…

Misfit Shine users, do you find the calorie counts accurate?
I'm just wondering. I just got my Shine, and it seems to be giving me a lot of calories back on MFP.

Bedtime Hunger - Quick snack suggestions?
Hey there, I'm getting really hungry around bed time (such that I can't get to sleep). My default snack is sunflower butter, but the calories (and maybe the polyunsaturated fat intake?) are making it hard for me to lose weight. (By the way, I'm not perfectly Paleo, just aspiring). What are lower calorie, not super…

Autoimmune protocol, anyone?
Hi all, I'm starting the AI paleo protocol (due to my thyroid problems). Previously (and hopefully again someday) I did eat dairy, etc. I'll likely do the protocol for a month solid, maybe two. Is anyone else doing this? If so, I'd love to have a couple of friends whose diaries I can creep to see what you're eating. This…

Paleo Coffee Creamer
I've been pondering doing a dairy free trial, but the main impediment has been that I need cream in my coffee. That is, I seriously NEED the coffee. And as a result I NEED the cream. All attempts at using substitutes have failed for me, on the grounds of being too processed/replete with unpronounceable ingredients, too…

Recipe importer problems, anyone?
Hi there, I can't get the Recipe importer to save my edits. Has anyone else here solved this problem? I didn't see an answer in the help section, unfortunately, so I thought I'd check the boards.

Strength vs. Muscle gain pt 2
Hi all, Ok, I get now that I can't actually build larger muscles while I'm eating at a deficit. However, is it possible to *get stronger* while eating at deficit? Specifically, is it possible for me to make serious progress on the (damn) push-up while eating at a slight deficit? I'm not frustrated at all, BTW. Oh, no, no,…

Quick question: building muscle while eating at deficit
Is that possible? I feel like I've read that it's not possible to build muscle while eating at a deficit and losing weight. I'm referring to building muscle specifically, not increasing strength, as such. Thanks for any insight you can offer!

Any UU's out there?
I know it's a long shot, since we're such a small denomination. I'm buddhist-fellowship, but I'd love a few like-minded buddies of any UU type!

Sprint drills?
Hi all, My C25K program (Zombies, Run!) has two 10 minute free-form runs in the workouts for this week. I was wondering about doing sprint drills rather than steady state running. I've heard that interval training is very effective in improving body composition. But, I can't sprint all out for 20 minutes (more like 1…

Runners, when does running become enjoyable?
I'm working on a C25K program, and I've just started week 4. I have compromised lung function, but the intense aerobic exercise is making it better-my lung function was up to 83% from 74% at the last office visit! And the extra cardio is definitely making it easier for me to lose weight. So, this has done good things for…

Fellow Teachers--Need some suggestions
Hi all, I don't have time to sit down and eat lunch most school days, because I'm working with students. However, I have breakfast at 5:30 am and by lunch I'm starving and very susceptible to all of the junk people bring in. What are your best snack-like foods that you can grab and eat quickly (without heating) while…

Bodyweight Training
Hi all, I'm a high school teacher, and the beginning of the academic year approaches. My time is extremely limited during the school year, and when I'm not grading or planning, I'd like to be spending my time with my son and my husband. Getting to the gym takes time, I always have to wait and wait for the squat racks, etc.…

Any Primal/Paleo people having success with weight loss?
. . . and if you are, would you friend me? I'm struggling to stay below my recommended calories, and it would be really helpful to see what other people are eating! I typically cook dinner for a spouse and a spawn who is five, so if you, too, cook for the younger set that would be great!

Adjust calories down or not yet?
Hi there, I am just looking for general discussion on the following. I started Stronglifts this week. I worked with a trainer on the first session, and I lifted too much weight for the squats. I ended up in some *considerable* pain (DOMS), skipped the Wednesday workout, went back to it today (Friday), but only did upper…

Really freakin' sore--lift again tomorrow?
Sorry to start two threads in very little time, but that's my next question! I lifted on Monday. Now I can't go down a flight of stairs or get out of my car without muttering a variety of curses (or, if I'm in front of my kid, groaning with no cursing). When lifting, should I soldier on with the workouts even if I'm quite…

Increased strength and lost weight simultaneously?
I was just wondering if this was actually possible, or if I need to set aside one goal in order to accomplish the other. Of course, I'd really prefer to do both!

Starting weight makes it unrealistic to add?
Hi all, I just started SL today. Here's the thing. I can bench and deadlift the 45lb empty bar, and I can OHP and squat using a lighter 25 lb empty bar. But I know we're supposed to add 5 lbs every workout. That would put me at 50 and 30 respectively on Wednesday. I am quite certain I will not be able to do 5 sets of 5 at…

Starting Stronglifts & Looking for Friends
Hi all, I have my appointment with a trainer today--I'm pretty nervous, and it's a very dude-oriented gym. I don't even know if I can lift an empty bar 5 times--let alone 25 times! But, I've got to start somewhere. I eat a primal-ish, higher fat diet, gluten-free, but I'm not obsessed with dietary perfection. I'm a mom…

Is anyone able to lose weight at 1800 net calories/day?
If so, would you be willing to tell me a little about yourself, maybe your workout schedule and your dietary approach? I've lost some inches, but not much in the way of pounds. I'm wondering if it's just a pipe dream, or if some folks are really able to do this. I just really hate being hungry.

Heavy lifters--your tips for starting out?
Hi all, I'm a 5'7" woman, not particularly strong, and I start on Monday. I just got a punch card to a "lifting" gym (it hosts strong man competitions. . . with gigantic cement things called Atlas balls . . . tee hee! Yes, yes I know the myth, but still. . .) The grunting dudes seem friendly enough! I was going to start…

Paleo/Primal Breakfasts that aren't Meat and Eggs
Hi all, I'm looking for suggestions for Paleo-ish or Primal breakfasts that would meet the above criteria and are quick to prepare (admittedly, they would be kind of un-Paleo criteria . . . sigh). I've been experimenting with Bullet Proof Coffee, but I get really hungry. I don't think liquid breakfasts work so well for me.…

Bodyweight Training--Body by You
Hi! Is anyone on here doing this? I've been using this book: http://www.amazon.com/dp/0345528972 for about two months now, and I've really made gains in strength! I like the simplicity of Bodyweight training, the fact that it's cheap (no gym required!) and that I can do it pretty much anywhere (so, theoretically there's no…

Doomed to be hungry?
Hi all, I'm a paleo/primal low carber, but I'd rather not actually put myself back into ketosis. Every time I'm in ketosis I get migraines, even while dutifully using the extra salt, broth and mineral supplements (I've even tried supplementing with unsweetened electrolyte water). I'm attempting to eat 1800 calories per day…
