Walk This Way
doesn't deserve a whole thread, but the association just popped into my mind and i'm in enough disarray that i've gone out the other end into frivolity. something that is either my tfl or my itb just went totally postal on me while i was at work. wrote up a bug in mad-composer crouch, moved my right leg sideways to go get…

rippetoe on lifting in 40s etc
eventually this week i'll get around to listening to this, but in the meantime maybe others would be interested in hearing it too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hB6-GZ8Xjd4 and now i think i'll apologize and stop posting stuff i haven't sat through myself.

shout out to all of you
i keep meaning to say and then forgetting again . . . i was at that workshop this weekend, where this one woman (who i truly, really can't stand, but never mind that) said in her intro that she had just recently hired a trainer again. actually, she'd just re-hired the workshop organizer . . . anyway, what struck me is she…

potential high holy squat wars with physio. help me keep it civil - and also informed.
this is the first time i've been in these shoes - confronting someone else's squat dogma with my own form of it. so i don't think my navigation skills are the best and i've got a vested interest in being constructive about it (75 bucks a pop, is how vested). the problem. - left shoulder that has been rear-impinged, weak,…

could 5lbs/workout really make me as HUNGRY as this?
i'm just curious what other people's experience is. when you keep adding plates at a faster rate with every workout, do you see a dramatic effect on your hunger levels compared with those periods where you might still be increasing your weight but you're doing it much more slowly? since xmas, i've been plugging along at…

the pullup peeps thread!
i just thought since we have so many members with an ambition to do pullups (yay, company!), it would be nice for to have their very own thread for discussion and sharing of victories/frustrations/progress and all. (not saying to keep your pullup content out of the daily workout thread, which wouldn't be my call to make…

again with the rows
found this discussion on tnation tonight, which i like a lot just because it a) acknowledges and b) potentially clarifies some of the wild variations in people's experiences with them durn rows.…

confess your gym gaffes . . .
ground rules: this is for confession our own unintentional goofs, not pointing or venting at other people. so i'll go first. i went in after work one day when it had been raining all day, so my lift shoes were packed up in my pannier bag instead of already on my feet. i peeled off all the wet rain-gear and stashed it, set…

ohp technical questions
i'm just so lost on this lift. i have seen the instruction stuff that i can find, and it all seems to answer the same high-level questions and give the same high-level warnings over and over again without going into the fundamental things that i'm unsure about. so my biggest ones: - grip width. pinkies at outside edge of…

Daily check in - NoVEmbeR give up!
well, i tried :\ nobody else made one yet, so . . . . me, i took november 1st off. went back to bed at 10 am today for a 'short' nap and found myself sleeping until 3pm. i took it as a sign the groke doesn't want me to go lifting today, so i didn't.

Age-adjusted strength norms, yay.
just thought i'd put this up here. there isn't that much difference by decade, but i always did feel it's a little unfair to be measured against the same standards at almost 50 that would have been used on my 25-yo self. http://lonkilgore.com/freebies/freebies.html ETA: oh and also. since i found the numbers a little…

okay . . . deadlifts are trashing my knees
i kind of didn't want to admit this was true right away. was thinking of just trying to work on it quietly by myself for a while before asking for help, hoping to find the key all by myself. but this is the smart move, i know. so here i go. and as always, i'll just say at the top: sorry, due to gym rules plus personal…

october goals retrospective - how'd you do?
this is a copy-paste of the goals i put into the 'goals' thread at the beginning of october, just to see how i actually did on them all. i tried to edit them down a little . . . wall of text poster is me. squats: Yes goal: [like to get back to at least] 80. don't need to go higher than 85 if that's not how it ends up…

caving knees - nice animation video
this is pretty neat. sometimes it does help to actually see what the concepts are talking about. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFBAGVNwhQE

OHP 'back arch' . . . explain me this?
i see people talking about doing this as if it were a bad thing . . . i'm not arguing about that, i just don't know what 'arch' means in this context. are we talking lower back, mid-back at the waist, what? any particular tips or specific muscle cues for maintaining safe form from people who have this one knocked? thanks.
-
would you lift with a kink in the back?
i just want to poll people's opinions and experience. i have what feels like a minor something going on, and i'm torn between not doing anything at all until it sorts itself out, and the idea that if i go out there and put the muscles to careful use with good form, it might actually make them straighten out. thoughts?…

reasons for being glad that i lift
i was out on my front balcony this morning (smoking), and this woman went by on the sidewalk . . . very unstable and shuffling. i watched her step down into the street to try crossing, and of course she fell. turned out later that she'd had a stroke about a year ago. down the stairs and out the door in my pyjamas to help…

diagnostic resource
i've been surfing a lot, looking for resources on how to figure out what specifically is wrong with a few parts of me (knees, left shoulder . . . .). this link is to my favourite site so far, as far as presentation and helping me to actually understand what might be going on. http://meded.ucsd.edu/clinicalmed/joints.htm…

seriously the weirdest don't-lift thing i've heard yet
i had dinner recently with an old friend, who's not usually given to flaky remarks and believing everything you see in the national enquirer while you're waiting to pay for your groceries . . .so i just don't know what to make of this one. thought i'd throw it up for entertainment if nothing else. we're both in our 40's,…

today is hundred-pound deadlift day!
slightly unsure if i should take up a whole thread just to say that . . . but now that i know you add 10 to deadlifts, i just realised this. and honestly, i'm so excited. feel like a little kid still in pjs (which i am) just itching to get at the stuff under the tree.
-
your mother doesn't lift here . . .
i'm nowhere near anal or tidy at home. or in anyone else's home either, if it comes to that. and i do not clean up after other adults. i'm not one of those 'things must all line up neatly' type people at all. at work, i'll be damned if i'll pick up anyone else's used coffee mugs or deal with their dishes for them. but take…

so talk to me about squats
i'm really starting to notice that squatting this much isn't doing much good for my knees. i do know they're not 'supposed' to be a problem if done correctly, but mine are just prone to inflammation whatever i do. so what i've been thinking is, i'm going to rotate. instead of just straight back squats every time, i'm going…

hate rows? express yourself here.
i just thought i'd put this up here. might as well collect all the hate in one place. have at it.

deadlift form question
i have a really noob deadlift question. but i keep trying to figure it out, reading stuff, watching form videos . . . and i just can't work out what the deal is. sorry i can't provide video, but i'll try to be as clear as i can. once i've got my grip on the bar, there are only two basic angles in my body: slight bend in…

just joined . . . shy
hi people. i just joined this group, and i guess i should start by saying two things: i'm feeling kind of shy/outclassed, and i'm still glad to find this. about me: i'll be 49 by the end of the month, have (mild-ish) rheumatoid arthritis which seems to be inactive right now, and i'm sort of an active couch potato type.…

moves to strengthen shoulder antagonists in bp and op?
sorry if this is going to be vague/too wordy/full of irrelevant info, but i've lurked for a while and seen great advice, so i'm hoping for input. i'm new(ish) in this forum and started out on learning lifting about 3 months ago . . . i was shown a selection of isolation moves by a trainer which i do think was useful to get…
