Gym Rant/Rave
So my husband and I have decided to take the plunge and set up a home gym including a power rack, full weight set, bench, and olympic barbell. The rack won't be here until next week, so these are my last few workouts at my gym. While I was lifting today, I kept thinking of all the things I will miss and all the things I…

Strengh Training Poll
Please take a minute to answer two quick questions for me: 1)How many calories burned do you log for each 10 minutes of strength training? 40 calories per ten minutes of heavy lifting 2)What intensity do you lift at? (Low – Moderate – High Intensity) Moderate to High intensity

Fat Acceptance
Just taking a quick poll of opinions on the Fat Acceptance movement. While I don't think that anyone should be discriminated against based on size, I also don't believe that living at an unhealthy weight should be considered ok. I was reading the website and found this quote "Scientific studies show that the majority of…

Motivating a friend to change?
One of my good friends has recently gained a bit of weight (50-100lbs). I know she is aware of the weight gain and is not happy with it, but she does not seem motivated to change. The reason she gained is because her boyfriend (who is a great guy in most respects) 1) is an extremely picky eater whose diet consists of…

Strength Training Calories Burned
I do an intense 20 minutes of lifting heavy at my gym. My HRM (which is inaccurate for stength training) gives me a whopping 250 calories burned. MFP gives me 80 calories burned. I usually just go with the lower number, but was wondering what other opinions are on this. Thanks for the input!

Christmas NSVs?
My goal was to lose 30 lbs my christmas and I just made it. To show of my success, I bought a new outfit (classy sweater that was a lose fitting style, but really showed off my collar bones that are very visible now, an above the knee -but not trashy - skirt and a great pair of heels to show of my legs that can now run…

Bringing salad to a party
So I have 4 holiday gatherings this week. I want to bring a salad to my Friday party, but have never brought one to any dinner party, so I have a few basic questions. I like really basic salads, usually just with greens and dressing, but I want to add a little bit of goat cheese to spruce it up a bit. The salad will…

Calves question
Does anyone know why a person can be really large with slim calves? It seems like holding up the weight of the person would build up muscle. On the other end, contestants on The Biggest Loser always have large calves at the finale. Why would that muscle be so disproportionately large compared to the other muscles they have…

Calories Burned Poll
I did 20 minutes of HIIT last night, and according to my HRM, I burned an average of 12 cals/minute (Note: This was really high intensity and would be hard for me to do much more than 20 minutes). That is normal for me with a heart rate of about 70-90%. My current weight is 188. I know that some people burn a lot more than…

Holiday eating....
With one holiday down and more fast approaching, there have been lots of posts about who is planning on not logging/pigging out on those special days. While I am all for cheat days (I have one or two a week, but don’t usually go over my maintenance) I feel like treating yourself on these special occasions goes against the…

Dog nutrition...
Silly question: Because of the holiday I just gave my two dogs each a large rawhide (8 inches long). The girl (in my profile pic) gets two cups of food a day and the boy gets three. Should I adjust the food I feed them tonight? Also, the girl is a little overweight....she weighs 70 lbs and should loose about 5lbs (She…

HRM and Strength Training
I have heard that HRMs do not accurately measure calories burned while strength training. For those of you who use HRMs, do you log the calories it tells you during strength training? Do you enter nothing and just underestimate calories burned for the day? Thanks

New running song...
I was running tonight and listening to the new Kelly Clarkson cd when this song came on and totally pumped me up. It is called "What Doesn't Kill You" Here is the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vEZDP_NVklc "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger Stand a little taller Doesn't mean I'm lonely when I'm alone What…

Treadmill Question....
While on the treadmill today, I worked pretty hard, with some intervil running and incline walking. The woman walking next to me walked on a high incline for about the same amount of time and held onto the treadmill the entire time for balance and support. When she was whiping down, I saw that she had burned more calories…

Italian food NSV!
I went out with a friend last night to celebrate her birthday and she wanted to go out to an Italian restaurant. I managed to not eat any of the bread put out on the table and ordered a salad (which tasted amazing!). Keep in mind that I had made a cake earlier in the day and knew that I had already had some frosting and…

Afraid to go to gym...
Before I start this rant, let me give full disclosure by saying that I am not the nicest person and have been known to judge. So for anyone who is afraid to go the the gym because you don't want other people staring at you and laughing at how big you are or how clueless you might look using weights for the first time, I…

Portion Control Tips
I was hoping to start a post where people can share their tips on portion control. For the first time in my live, I have started to get the hang of it. Here are a few of mine: 1 - Hummus is a weakness of mine. I can eat a huge plateful. To curb that, I started buying red chili hummus. It still tastes good, but the extra…

Slow Running Songs
I love reading the posts about playlists. I just started running two months ago, and really enjoy all the music. There is one song that I love running to that has a slower beat. The song is "Tonight and the Rest of My Life" by Nina Gordon. The chorus speeds up, but the verses have almost no beat. I love just hearing the…

Calories burned
When I work out, I burn 300-600 calories. If I didn't want to loose any weight, I should eat 2050 calories, according to MFP. So, logically, does it make sense to subtract 85 calories (the amount I would burn in an average hour 2050/24) from the total calories burned during exercise for an hour? Does anyone use this trick?…

Offended
I was just reading a post of someone fifty pounds lighter than me calling him/herself fat. My husband (who weighs more than me, but is much taller and looks like an average weight) also complains that he is fat, and this frustrates me to no end. If this person thinks that they are too big, they must think I am disgusting.…
