HRM and Strength Training

I have heard that HRMs do not accurately measure calories burned while strength training.

For those of you who use HRMs, do you log the calories it tells you during strength training? Do you enter nothing and just underestimate calories burned for the day?

Thanks

I didn't realize this was an issue. I've been logging mine based on what my HRM said. Does it severely over estimate what you burn???

I only log my cardio - This isn't advice, nor is it right or wrong. It's just what I do...

I use a polar FT7 during my workouts and I feel it does a good job of tracking. I guess my main thought is that "weight training" is a VERY loose term. I belong to three different gyms, because of my travel schedule mainly, and its fascinating to see the difference between them. One gym is a box gym and people are training with weights, but the pace is very different than my main gym.

I think if I broke it into camps, then one camp would be the "typical" box gym and the old school body building push push workout.. the thought process was you did a set and did a rather large break (90 seconds to 2 minutes or more) between sets. the other camp is the functional training group. functional training uses more olympic style lifting, and few single muscle exercises. the pace is also different and the results are different. any HRM would show GREATLY different results between the workouts. I think the body building style workout has very little cardio benefit and as a result would not show a big number on a HRM. As the cardio aspects are MUCH higher on the functional training workouts I have personally seen some huge HRM calorie numbers.

anyway. Just my opinion and my own observations but thought i would chime in.

Some of them do, I belief the Polat FT80 was made for strength training...

I am a newbie to this stuff but just this weekend i received my Zephyr HXM bluetooth HRM. I installed several apps and tried them all. The one that worked best was Sports Track Live Pro (there is more than one - this one says by STL) Pay the $5 for the pro version straight up. I love this combo. The HXM was paired up to the app instantly (I use HTC Inspire) that i have mounted to my handlebars (a case that i picked up at REI for $25). I connect headphones to the phone and I get updates as often as I want. You can then upload the info of your workout to the website and analyze all info. You can get BPM, Distance, Calories, Cadence, Elevations, Altitudes, averages of all this and more. I have only used this for outdoor cycling so far. The HXM itself is very comfortable to wear and so far has been accurate.
