Calves question

Does anyone know why a person can be really large with slim calves? It seems like holding up the weight of the person would build up muscle.
On the other end, contestants on The Biggest Loser always have large calves at the finale. Why would that muscle be so disproportionately large compared to the other muscles they have been working on?
I was just curious if there was any answer for this besides "the larger people have no muscle and Biggest Loser contestants have a lot of developed muscle".
(Luckily I have been blessed with very nice calves, if I do say so myself )

I think most of the BL people take up running. That can build the calves. Also, they may have to do exercises to build their calves to combat the shin splints that can accompany beginning runners.0

I think it's partly genetic...my calves are slender even when I've been running regularly. My 14yo daughter has her dad's frame, not mine, and her calves are way bigger than mine. She's also 2 inches taller than me already!0
