vitamin C and insulin theory
I found an interesting article the other day while looking up supplements & thought it may be of use to someone. An excerpt: "...In the 1970's, Dr. John Ely discovered the Glucose-Ascorbate-Antagonism (GAA) theory. Glucose and vitamin C (ascorbate) have a very similar chemical makeup. This theory proposes that elevated…

Prepping for a 5K
So I have my carbs under control and BG in a good range, not its time I start getting some consistent exercise. I've been walking a bit every day and feeling much stronger (less winded after putting on my socks). So I decided today I am going to set a goal of running in a 5K race later this year. I know it will take a few…

Invokana - Another UTI
I have been on Invokana for 2 months now, and it has done wonders for me. My fasting levels have never been lower, this morning 88 and it surely is helping with my weight loss. But I am having a hard time with the side effects, namely the UTIs. This is the second round of antibiotics for me. I just don't know if I can…

NSV of the day
I only just recently learned what the term NSV means (Non Scale Victory) and thought it might be fun, encouraging and inspiring to start a thread here for us to share our NSV of the day. For me, today I was able to wear a new pair of size 40 pants I bought over the weekend at Costco. This represents several NSV's for me.…

Help with Freestyle Lite Freedom
Hi! I just got my blood glucose monitor here in Finland. It gives readings in mmol/L but I want it to show readings in mg/dl since that's what I understand from back home in America. Does anyone know if it's possible to change? I checked the manual on the internet in English but this is not mentioned in the settings…

Vacation starts today, now what?
So I'm leaving for Las Vegas today and I'll be there until Tuesday. It's a family reunion and I'm concerned about eating. I packed my breakfast shakes and protein bars, so I have breakfast and snacks covered. But one of the nights we have Buca Di Bepo catering and I think we're going to a buffet for lunch one day. Anyone…

Glycemic Index and other questions
I'm still a newbie (was diagnosed at the end of July), but I'm trying to make sense of this disease, and there is so much conflicting information out there. Can anyone give me the low down on glycemic index? I've cut Waaay back on my carbs, and together with Metformin and exercise, my numbers are definitely coming down,…

Question about Carbs
Good day, Hello. I am glad to be a part of this group! I am wondering, how long does it take your body to burn carbs? It probably depends on many factors but in general if I eat 25 carbs at 12:00 noon how long does it take to burn them before I can have more carbs! Thanks

Difficult situation
I was at my daughter'sbest friend's house last nite. They don't have very much money, and they fixed dinner for us. I didn't want to hurt her feelings, and it was spaghetti. Full of carbs. So my Blood sugar is up thismorning. What could I have done different?

Newbie here I need help!
Hello all. I am 38 years old and was told in May by my physician I was pre-diabetic with a fasting blood sugar of 208 and he was given me the Sugar busters diet plan and 6 months to see what I could do to improve it. Thursday I was feeling horrible, and after I ate I felt better so I decided to go out and buy a glucometer…

A1C, weight loss and thyroid connection
Hi all! It's been a while since I checked in, so wanted to share an update. Dec 2013 I was diagnosed when my A1C was 8.9, March 5.7, today 5.0! I'm guessing my doc is going to want to talk about decreasing or taking me off metformin. My other big news, I have finally made it under 200 lbs today! :) But with weight loss,…

Acceptable Substitutions
I was diagnosed about a month ago. The fact that my choices were having a real impact on my health and, let's face it, my life expectancy, really hit home. I was living as if I was in my 20's, when in reality I'm double that :-). I had to face that it was time for some serious changes to happen. I've been counting my carbs…

When testing drives you crazy
I haven't been testing my post 1 hr breakfast in a few weeks because after 5 months of eating the exact same thing and testing daily I know my range is always between 90-100. However, this morning I tested because I changed two things: I changed my steel cut oats brand and changed my egg entree. An hour after eating, I do…

Plant-based, low carb, high fat or something else?
I am finding that diet is almost a religious subject for people with diabetes. I am still investigating, but my preliminary conclusion is to focus on low fat, low cholesterol, and weight loss. The obvious fact seems to be that people with diabetes who lose weight significantly improve their condition. I would love to hear…

Blood Sugar after Meals
Usually I only check my BG levels in the morning, after fasting all night. Usually they are pretty high (140). So I figured I would try checking my blood sugar after meals. 90 minutes after a 500 calorie (40 carb) lunch my blood sugar was 113. So is this good, or isn't it?

Strength Training as a Diabetic
I've firmed up a strength training regimen as part of my weekly exercise. The reason I started was just because I couldn't imagine a complete exercise program without doing some strength training. It was just a feeling I had based on what I've done in earlier portions of my life. In what I've read about current general…

Interesting Experience Today
Hi Everyone- Not sure if my body had a reaction to wheat/ processed flour or what but here's what happened today: I was totally craving a turkey sandwich when I was at the grocery store.
