  • Most runners will nod, smile or say "Hi" back, but then again... some people are just miserable. RunnersWorld did a Twitter campaign #runnersmile to encourage a bit of community spirit.
  • All hail Sudocrem! It's a lifesaver and I currently use it on my breastbone where my running bra rubs, where the labels of my shorts sit in the small of my back shaving into my skin, and on my poor chafed thighs. I went through a small pot on the way to where I am now, after every long run I was a mess. Thankfully I don't…
  • I shoot weddings, and a minimum of 3 hours on your feet, occasionally fixed in position, but other times running, walking, crouching, crawling, holding odd positions to get the right angle, with all your kit on your back really takes it out of you. I found a rating for fishing from the riverbank (or something similar) and…
  • Hiya, I'm a veggie too, and a long distance runner. I've learned lots in the last year or so. Add me if you like!
  • Yup. *waves*

  • It might seem a long way now, but once you get used to just running and enjoying it, 10k is a really pleasant distance to run. I think my body only stops panicking (mad breathing, heart going crazy, limbs complaining) about the fact that I'm making it run after about 6k (or about 4miles) and settles down and gets on with…
  • I ran my fist ever 5k in 2006 at 30years old and 12and a half stone (175lbs) in 35mins. It was a pretty mad mixture of grass, trail and tarmac, a Race for Life around Broughton Hall in Skipton. I started running again last February at 15stone+ (I stopped counting, but somewhere above 210lbs) and when I got up to a 5k route…
  • Hiya! I'm Caroline, from Leeds. I lost most of my weight before finding this site, but have found it really useful in helping me learn more about how everything works and keeping my nutrition in order. I'm a runner (I love saying that, and the old part of me that still thinks like a fat lass is still surprised to hear it…
  • I've been vegetarian for 12 years, and never really had a problem until I started getting serious about losing weight and getting into running much more. Despite regular beans, pulses and lentils, loads of leafy greens, and nuts by the handful, I was weak and tired all the time and feeling pretty depressed about everything…
  • Very respectable time! Well done. Running is not all about speed. Make some of your runs about breathing, some about your stride and balance, and try for a slower, longer run every so often. Vary your speed in sections over the distances. If you want to improve your speed, all of this will help. (I should take my own…
  • My DSH mackerel tabby boy is Fagin. He has the mark of Mohamed, 2 very pretty eye-stripes, a beautiful spotty/stripy brown coat, stipy legs and tail, with a white tummy and neck, as though he's wearing an old overcoat with a smart white shirt on underneath. His brother had the same shaped colouring on his coat, but with…
  • Hurray! Well done!
  • I was diagnosed last Wednesday, and started on 50mg levothyroxine straight away. Just knowing that there was a reason why I feel less intelligent than I used to be, why I forget all sorts of things, can't concentrate for long periods of time, and have been experiencing a rather high tide of the depression I've been…
  • Cut off the root end and the pointy top bit first, to a depth of about a centimeter, and throw them in the bin. Once they're out of the way, you should be fine to carry on. I usually then half it from root to tip and slice or dice each half from there. Only very rarely now do I get onion eyes.
  • Between me and my partner we've lost 6 stone (84lbs), so there's lots more room in the bed these days, but it's taken up by my lovely stripy boycat Fagin who insists on sleeping in with us, and stretches out across the bed or pushes us to the sides. I've had him since he was tiny, and I looked after his mother just before…
  • I'm having the same problem. I've been veggy for nearly 10 years, and never knew I had trouble balancing protein, carbs and fat until I started running lots - that's why I was 15 stone (210lbs)! My next goal is a half marathon (on May 13th), and in training I'm almost there, but I'm still 12.5 stone. I've been stubbornly…
  • Thanks a lot Ladymuscles. I never thought I'd have to worry about this sort of thing - it was so much easier to be an overweight lump!
  • Ey up! Leeds checking in! (Do I have to say it's in Yorkshire? Surely everyone knows that!) I lost most of my weight before joining here in August, but I use it more to learn about running and nutrition. Hi to everyone, and best of luck!
  • Goron! Thanks for your support! This is something that means a great deal to Mima and I. We've both changed our lives in the last 12 months, and vastly improved our health. Now we're reacting to the loss or illness of our friends and family, trying to give something back to charities that have made a difference. It's our…
  • The gun time is the interval between the clock starting and you crossing the finish line. The chip time reflects the interval between you crossing the start line and the finish line. This is your actual race time.
  • Wow! Always beautiful, but now sleek and toned too! Really well done! X
  • I love my running! The size I'd ballooned up to had already made me decide I was going to get back to it, but was really motivated this year by the death of my nephew's other auntie (my sister-in-law's sister) who died of Kidney Cancer only 6 months after diagnosis, at the age of 41. I've raised a couple of hundred quid…
  • Thank you thank you thank you all! I've still got a little way to go, but as a friend of mine who works as a personal trainer says, people built like me and her are lucky when it comes to running, especially long distances, because we carry our fuel with us!
  • Sorry - just re-edited the post to include them all - got the code wrong at first!
  • Yep - do it first thing in the morning. I can run for miles and love it with an early start, and then feel buzzing for the rest of the day, but if I leave it til after 11am, I'm more likely to give the whole thing a miss and stay inside. And if I'm not supposed to be running, then there's no way I'll run for anything. It's…
  • I've had a similar worry since I started using the Runkeeper app a week or so ago - it gives me way more calories than MFP does for all of my activities. Really don't know which to trust! My weight is staying pretty solidly steady, despite getting some serious long miles in. Not sure what's best to do?
  • DW's been pretty much a constant in my life. In times of trouble, I find myself turning to him, in a WWTDD? type way. My classic Dr, when i first started watching for myself rather than just cos my big bro was watching, was Davidson. But my favourite has been Tennant. Favourite companions: Rose and Donna (although I am…
