  • Quoting the other guys and agreeing...whatever you are comfortable at that allows you to get your heart rate to a decent place. Also, what are your goals? Increased time/distance? A 5k? Marathon? Before my knees gave out, I trained at 10-11 minute miles. Believe me, it was gradual; run 45 seconds, walk 15, etc. After a few…
  • Way to go, Phil! See if the grandkids can do a mile with you...and if they want to keep going, go for it!
  • Phil - as everyone else has said, welcome! Remember, we're all at different points in our lives, different lifestyles, habits, metabolisms, everything. What works for one may not necessarily work for another; the trick is to find out what works for you. Kind of like a 12-step program, as Kevin said we don't judge or offer…
  • Check out the Male Stop board...lots of inspiration for guys.
  • Hey, guys...been gone for a few weeks, long story (trip to Vegas, family issues, stalled progress). Just glad to be back and reading some inspiration. Noticed a few posts from some of our new friends about tough weekends; maybe I'm the opposite, but I bust my *kitten* in the yard all weekend, knowing I eat differently…
  • Welcome, Joey - you're among friends on this board. Nice mission; if it helps, set lots of little missions along the way. This tends to ease the sting of crappy weeks, and you'll have them (we all have). Stay positive, celebrate little victories whenever you can. Good luck!
  • Have to agree with everyone; logging accurately has opened my eyes and helped with my self-control, knowing when to stop, making better choices, etc. I look at it this way; if I give 15 minutes a day to logging, in getting healthier I add 15 minutes to my life!

  • Way to go, Jaime! Don't stop!

  • tcj - running is just walking really fast; every runner in the world started out by walking...then they went a little faster when they could. There is absolutely no difference between a 4-minute miler and us...we have the same legs, the same brain, the same heart. It's nothing more than saying "Today, I'm going to start."…
  • Woo-hoo! Down 3 lbs since last weigh in...222 is more than just a room number (fans of 70's TV know what I mean...)
  • Welcome, Dave...are those onion rings on your eyes??? You mentioned the other thing being anti-social; that's one of the cool things about MFP...you can be as social or private as you want. There are lots of folks on here that post comments/suggestions all day long, and others who just track their progress and occasionally…
  • Some food for thought (low carb kind)...ten years ago when my knees were younger, I took up running 5K's as a kind of fun thing to do with my wife. We never worried about best times or anything like that, mostly we just enjoyed finishing. Once I finished a few, I got the bright idea to train for the Chicago Marathon. I…
  • Great job, aburt57 and dubikr! Be sure to check out the May challenge on another thread in this group. As for sleeping, when I first started MFP and got off my *kitten* and back on the treadmill or trail, I had NO problem falling asleep, was even skipping the 2 a.m. trip to the watering hole (you guys over fifty know what…
  • Way to go, Alex! Just curious - have you (or anyone else) noticed any difference in your sleep pattern?
  • Sounds like a plan...we'll have to come back 5/31, copy our goals and see how we did. 1. Down to 215... 2. Start strength training 3x week 3. Continue the daily 30-40 minutes of cardio 4. Behave myself in Vegas
  • Hey guys - sounds like everyone's had something positive happen for them, that's great! Gotta celebrate those small victories as well as the big ones... Today marks 21 straight days of at least 30 minutes of cardio after months of NOTHING...a little strength training here and there, a lot of yardwork. Working on getting…
  • Please, please, PLEASE - put away the thought that men are only interested in the physical appearance. Any man worth his salt looks into your eyes, deep into your soul, and finds your beauty. That's all there is to it! He's out there, looking for you. But when he looks into your eyes, looking for your soul, he'll also want…
  • Nah113 and Alexfro - first and foremost, you have to tattoo this in your brain; you didn't get to where you are overnight, you won't reach your goal overnight, either. Patience is the key; everything you do, anything you do, is more than what you were doing before MFP. Don't beat yourself up if you don't see any progress…
  • CJ - good for you; we live in such an over-medicated nation, and deep in our heart of hearts we know the doctor is just giving us whatever we want so we'll stop whining and go away. Not an indictment of all docs, but I'd prefer to go your route and fix it myself. My A1C is 6, borderline type 2 diabetes. No meds for me,…
  • Kevin, when did you start your program? 45 lbs down w/o any cardio or lifting? How long did it take you to do that, and do you attribute it to diet (calories in) only? When I joined the Navy in 1981, I tipped the scales at 245...surprised they let me in, but nine weeks of boot camp later, I graduated at 187. Never missed a…
  • What shaneabner said...AND, don't beat yourself up! I know, it's easier said than done, but remember this simple phrase - you are your own best friend. Celebrate every small victory, no matter what, and forgive yourself quickly if you think you've slipped. No big deal! Tomorrow, start again. Remember, anything you do -…
  • A good week overall, kept the calories100-200 under goal every day except today (blast that Subway Philly cheesesteak!). Did at least 30 minutes cardio every day. Sodium reduction is something I need to pay attention to as well! HW - 237 SW - 235 CW - 231 GW - 185
  • [/quote] Dude! That's exactly how I feel! I not only left a few other groups, but I also changed my MFP settings so that it doesn't post all that silly junk. Who cares if I burn 200 calories walking the dog or completed my diary and was under my target, or that I logged on for 5 days straight? And then to have someone tell…
  • Nick64 - hang in there, man. Since you just joined, once you start reading some of these boards (I've found this one is one of the best) you'll hear it over and over - we didn't get where we are overnight, and we won't get to our "GW" overnight, either! Patience is key; read these guys' posts often, and you'll stay…
  • Gents - glad to be back; I've been in and out of MFP for a couple of years - no excuses, let's just say life got the better of me for a while. Lowest I was at was 217; creeped back up to 235, so decided to give it one more try. I also quit posting on the other boards, got a little tired of the judgmental attitudes and…
  • Hi, there! Congrats on doing this; I'm a 53-year-old from the sw side, but a lifelong Cubs fan too! One thing I've found about this process (and reading so many posts) is that we all have our down times, but get so much more out of our small victories! For example, you decide to go for a walk at lunch, and as you walk past…
  • Virgo! You didn't gain your excess weight two weeks before you joined MFP, it took quite a while (as it did for all of us). Be patient and persistant. I may not be one to talk, I was at this for 2-3 months, only lost 9 pounds, then due to some family situations got away from it. But I'm back, more convinced than ever that…
  • I'm going through one of those bad days/weeks/months right now. Thanks for the inspiration...
  • Foe - I get a greater feeling of self-satisfaction from the way my clothes fit, the longer I can go on the treadmill or the bike, etc. Some stinking number on an electronic scale only discourages me, so I personally choose to weigh in as infrequently as possible.
