Have had my last alcohol tonight til 8 Feb at least, having done before am excited, aware of the weekend temptation, but equally know the benefits from 5/6/7 weeks off...

I’m starting deliberately late, been on holidays. I did dry January last year and really benefited from better running and better sleep. Having been injured for last 5 months, I am now getting back to fitness and using this as a good boost & kick start to losing the weight I put on not exercising. I’m looking forward to a…

Not negative, almost definitely true. I’ve not liked the taste after having a glass of wine after not drinking for a few weeks. I wasn’t drinking every night either, just at the weekends. Losing the taste for it has been the biggest surprise for me. It’s a positive not negative!

I’m also trying to work out what moderation for me is. 2 glasses on one night a week might be it. Since Jan 1, I’ve had 4 drinks in total on 2 different Saturdays and noticed worse sleep on both nights. I think going to be largely dry until mid-March will help decide if I do that or go totally dry. The more weekends I…

After an almost totally dry Jan, I had a couple of glasses of wine on Saturday night. I didn’t really like the taste! it’s made a big difference to my marathon training and I think my mindset has shifted. I was drinking Fri-Sun with my husband but I’m feeling the benefit. Not much difference on the scale, but the other…

Thank you all for your support, honesty and motivation. I set out at the start of Jan to drink less and only at the weekend. The reality has been apart from one Saturday completely dry. It’s aided my marathon training and I think I feel better. I will be continuing in February, completely dry in the week and then an…

I’m in too, I’ll be carrying on as in Jan, almost totally dry, literally had 2 glasses of wine in January. Thanks for starting the thread!

Another weekend done! Weekends were definitely where I’d drink. This one I’ve barely thought about it. It’s amazing how quickly a habit can form.
-
Been a bit quiet this week, but reading the thread. Your posts inspire me! I’m definitely carrying on into February. It is helping hugely with my marathon training. In time, I will probably end up having a couple of drinks on a Friday and Saturday, but I intend to stay primarily dry until mid-March (bar the very odd…

I simply got out of the habit of logging food, weighing food & standing on the scale. I was pretty glad to have only put on 21lb over three years. I’m 8lb down again now and will not make that mistake twice.

I’ve been largely alcohol free since the start of January. It’s not made much difference on the scale, however I feel better and sleep better. I always built it into my calories before. It’s a very personal choice, for some people giving up is the right option, for others moderating it is also right. I’m doing a marathon…

Does anyone feel more tired from not drinking? I find I need earlier nights... and wake refreshed, despite somehow needing to be in bed earlier! Not a complaint, just an observation.
-
Someone who I hadn’t seen for a while told me yesterday ‘you’ve shrunk!’ I’m only 8lb down and doesn’t feel much, but great motivation!
-
Agree Julie, good experiment to see what fits and doesn’t, great onwards motivation too!

As I planned,I had a couple of drinks with friends on Saturday after a dry 3 weeks. It didn’t taste great, I didn’t feel great and I didn’t feel good on Sunday. It’s galvanized me into carrying on and a realization of what even a small amount of alcohol does to your body.

Another Friday & day 18 dry. It’s strange how I’m rarely I’m thinking about it now. It does feel like a habit has been broken. Grateful for the thread and the ongoing motivation.

I’m in for February as well. I’m hardly thinking about it most of the time. Continuing into Feb will be great. Thanks all for the support.

Day 14 here. This weekend was surprisingly easy. Not even really thinking about it. I will likely have a drink this weekend, but limited to 2. And then I’ll be dry again for another 7 weeks before my half marathon. It’s making a big change to my training & I’m not missing it at all. Keep going everyone!

A second Friday night successfully navigated. I think it’s getting much much easier. Good luck to you all this weekend whichever way you’re doing this.

Try alcoholexperiment.com it’s part of Annie Grace Naked Mind, however, you set off on a 30 day journey to be free. You get a daily email with a ‘lesson’. It really breaks the book down into chunks. If you set yourself off, time it for when you’d be most likely to drink, that way you can distract yourself with the email!…

Day 10 for me. I am definitely feeling the benefit and not getting a craving between 6pm -8pm. I intend to stay dry this weekend and into next week, before probably having the odd glass next weekend. My half marathon is mid-March so I will be dry again from early Feb until the race.

Try going dry for a period of time. I’m 9 days into dry Jan & it’s well worth the break. Check the less alcohol one day at a time January thread on the challenges page. Very friendly. The break is changing how I view alcohol and how I’ll consume it in future.
-
It does if you put the right info in, if you log your food correctly (and weigh your portions). It’s not a magic wand, but will work if you invest the time and honesty with yourself to stick with it.

Into day 9 here. A great result on the scales 4lb lost to 149lb. I didn’t set out to be totally dry, however, it’s giving such a benefit to my marathon training I will keep going. It’s changing my view on when/how I will drink in future. I’ve combined the training with being v good on calories, so the weight drop isn’t…

I’m very similar. Started at 156lb on 1200, 5ft4 and goal of 135lb. It works for me. When I exercise I eat back at least half. There’s not much wiggle room for treats at 1200, however a good balanced diet of veg, grains, lean meat, fish, fruit, oats etc is really filling & healthy. If it works for you, no reason to change.…

I think sustainable moderation will be my end point, I am also doing it for weight loss and marathon training. Genuinely surprised how different running feels with 7 days off. Intending on remaining dry for as long as I can. Race is mi-March which a week in, no longer feels impossible. I suspect I’ll have the odd glass or…

Day 7 here too. Love reading the thread. This part of the week is normal, wouldn’t usually drink until Thursday/Friday, hope that doesn’t change. Massive difference in exercise so it’s all positive change.
-
Like it! Looking at nutrition as well as training & interested in everyone’s experience. Thanks!

Do any of you abstain from alcohol while half or full marathon training?
-
Day 6, barely thought about it today & not even tempted. The naked mind has focused me more, I fully intended having the odd glass on Friday & Saturdays but a little longer abstaining feels good. Certainly a benefit to exercising and recovery after long training sessions. This will give me the freedom to opt in & out as…
