  • Unless you are diabetic, insulin resistant or have another medical concern, I wouldn't worry about it. The "sugar" number MFP gives you is based on a one-time recommendation for maximum "added sugar" and is of little use to most people, since MFP tracks all sugars not just the nebulous "added sugars". If you find a…
  • I'm the same. I look in the mirror and think "I look cute," and then I see a picture and wonder how I turned into a frumpy cow. I have to say that, for me, mirror pics are also less flattering than looking in the mirror. My first, totally appalling, before pic is a mirror pic.
  • I read it as she lost 10 lbs of fat, not gained 10 lbs of muscle.
  • This is not a shock if they included people with chronic or terminal illnesses. We tend to think of skinny people as dieting o be skinny, but a lot of people are severely underweight right before they die- cancer patients, people with other chronic diseases, those with organ failure, etc.
  • Keep in mind that the daily sugar allowance on MFP is based on a proposed number for "added sugar" and isn't especially useful for most people. You are better off finding a carb limit that works for you and your goals and getting most of those carbs from whole food sources like veggies and fruits (in moderation). If you…
  • That 130ish weight seems like a place where a lot of our bodies are comfortable. I'm 5'5 with a small frame and relatively high body fat percentage (appalling pics are around here somewhere in the success stories forum). My highest was around 143 and I've gotten down to around 129-131 now. Getting below that 130 mark is…
  • You have to ask them. I don't use egg or butter when I make my vegetarian dumplings, but I do use milk in the dough.
  • I use the ON 100% Whey Gold Standard Natural Whey Vanilla (with the goldish label rather than the red) doesn't have sucralose or other artificial sweeteners. It does have natural sweeteners but not stevia . I searched for a while to find something without sucralose, because I sometimes have very nasty reactions to splenda.…
  • This or any of Leslie's programs. I like her newer 5 mile fat burning walk. It has 5 separate miles so you can do , 2, 3, 4 or all 5 depending on how much time/energy you have and the pace is brisk for all the miles. She also includes a 2 minute boost at the end of each mile, so you can keep walking or add a light jog.
  • I would probably just bump up your activity estimate to reflect the increase instead of trying to count it as exercise, but its up to you. Just make sure to log your calories religiously. I gained almost all of my extra weight as a vet student on clinics, on my feet sometimes for 12 or more hours at a time and on call in…
  • I'm finishing up week 5. I'm pretty happy with it thus far, though I'm mainly adapting it to do without machines at home.

  • Insanity is...well insane. My brother and his fiancee who work out all the time and run miles everyday for fun as well as go to the gym and teach classes both said Insanity kicked their butts when they started it. The first time I did an Insanity workout, I had to take breaks in the warm up.
  • I like ON too, but be careful of Cookies and Cream if you want to limit or avoid high-fructose corn syrup. For some bizarre reason that flavor contains it where others do not, a fact I did not discover until after I bought it and started using it.
  • I spend a lot of my day gently telling people that their dogs or cats are overweight. This is a surprisingly uncomfortable conversation and many people get pretty defensive, so you have taken a big step :). As with people, the best thing you can do is to find out how much your dog needs to eat and budget calories…
  • This, I think is the important point. There is a difference between quietly being turned off by a certain feature and assuming that no one could be attracted to anyone who had it. Men or women who make general statements like "Men don't like fat girls" or the equivalent are rude. There is also a difference between having…
  • I also keep dark chocolate around. I have regular and a kind with a little mint. It satisfies the craving and it's strong enough that I'm unlikely to have a dark chocolate binge (and if I did I'd feel sick enough not to repeat it). For me, diet chocolate products are big binge triggers; they just don't satisfy the…
  • I make versions of that cake you linked a lot. It's heavily requested and is the absolute favorite of my brother, sister in law and mom. I've done chocolate PB cupcakes (though I'd use a different chocolate cake cake- that one is really soft for cupcakes) and while they are really good, the cake is awesome. The…
  • Realize that it happens sometimes and just eat better. Being too hard on yourself is a recipe for giving up, depression and more binges. I also try to practice breaking the cycle, like if I start eating making myself leave the house and do something. In addition, I try (try being the operative word) to avoid trigger foods.…
  • Or just generally increasing your fat. Sometimes when you eat low fat, things have a tough time moving through. For me adding fat and eating 2 or 3 prunes per day usually helps with the issue.
  • This is what I do. I was with water and condition as needed after workouts and clean my hair when I need t. Lately, I've been experimenting with using a heavily diluted baking soda rinse followed by a diluted apple cider vinegar rinse to clean it instead of shampooing. I have to say, my hair has never been in better shape.…
  • The blood work numbers they use to determine most common medications are not generally the stress markers that increase. Losing weight tends to lower blood pressure, cholesterol, etc. no matter how you lose it. Inflammation causes damage that predisposes you to disease but the results of this inflammation are usually seen…
  • It's pretty much impossible to lose weight without losing muscle. As you lose weight, you will see whatever muscle and bone you have more than when they are covered with fat , but eating a calorie deficit and not working out will have you shedding both fat and muscle. Eating at a deficit and doing intense cardio with not…
  • All three :). I use a lot of eggs and egg whites as protein sources. I like whole eggs in moderation, but I eat eggs too much to eat that many whole eggs. I prefer whites to cook with and to make into omelets with veggies and stuff, but I'll use egg beaters in a pinch.
  • This. I'm on the lookout for a study showing any dietary protein level actually causing kidney disease rather than exacerbating extant disease. I found exactly one study in rats and it was spectacularly inapplicable, since the problems were associated with a diet high in a particular bacterial protein in one specific…
  • The last one 0 lbs, but I was at the bottom of a size after losing 10 lbs but still not fitting into the next one down. Then, I started lifting weights and the smaller one finally zips all the way without impeding breathing.
  • I need to keep my fat intake to around 25-35%, sometimes slightly higher to keep myself feeling sane. If I eat very low fat, I tend to be really hungry, constipated and miserable. It's also a sure way to induce binges for me. I have my fat set at 30% and this is usually plenty. Most days I come in under that, but I…
  • When I lift weights, especially when I up the weight or change my routine, the scale goes up, because muscles retain water as part of the healing process (the water translates to scale weight). When eating at a deficit, you are not going to gain appreciable muscle mass. Even at a surplus, gaining actual muscle mass is…
  • I have found so much inspiration here that I'm sharing my scary bikini pics (you were warned). Still not quite to the point that I'd wear it in public (I'm super self-conscious), but I'm getting closer :) I'm mostly using it a gauge. The time between May and JUne, I did 2-3 days per week of Insanity and 2-3 days per week…
  • I agree with the idea of focusing on basics. When I lost weight a few years ago, I got some basic pants in black, grey and khaki and a skirt or two. Most of my tops were fine, so I didn't need to replace those. Stores like Ross or Marshalls are another good option, because they often have nice things on deep discount.
  • The last few pounds are hard, because you are at a healthy weight and you have much less margin for error with your calories. How long have you been yo yoing? What does your current plan look like?
