  • I hate to burst the bubble on providing literature to support your point. I am a pharmacist and I spend my life evaluating literature. The literature you provided doesn't actually support your point. The first two studies were short term (48-84 hours) fasts. This is much different than the typical person on MFP who eat far…
  • "Drug" of choice for increasing HDL is exercise.

  • The chemical in Red Yeast Rice that lowers your LDL is lovastatin. This is what drugs like Zocor and Crestor are based off of. In fact lovastatin is only available as a prescription now. Red yeast rice is no longer allowed to contain lovastatin due to patent issues. Since this has changed ryr is no longer effective for…
  • I saw this post yesterday and wasn't in a place to respond. I just barely found it again. I just wanted to point out a flaw. I lurk around these forums a lot so I read many of your posts. You are constantly touting that meal timing has no effect on weight loss. I can eat whenever I want and still lose weight as long as I'm…
  • If you take any medications you should talk to a doctor or pharmacist before drinking the 'blue's away" tea. St. John's Wort has multiple interactions with other drugs, to the point of being dangerous.
  • No, the equations that the monitor uses to estimate calories burned from your heart rate are only accurate when your heart rate is elevated, and work best with steady state cardio.
  • Bump to save the paleo flow chart
  • Domnios has a nutrition calculator. You can choose the crust. toppings etc. http://express.dominos.com/pages/calculator.jsp Although it isn't for the same restaurant, it will probably be more accurate than just guessing.
  • I really hope you're not taking Prilosec 4X per day. It is meant to be taken once daily, sometimes twice daily if you have resistant GERD. Once in the AM 30 minutes before your breakfast should be plenty. This is coming from someone in working on their doctorate of pharmacy right now (I graduate in 109 days).
  • By definition Cardiac Output equals the Heart rate times Stroke Volume (CO= HR X SV). The only way for the cardiac output not to increase with increased heart rate is for stroke volume to decrease. What about strength training causes a decrease in stroke volume?
  • ALL of the Girl Scout Cookies...oops.. I think I just did that anyways.
  • I just wanted to mention to you that we learned in pharmacy school that the fatigue should go away after being on the beta-blocker for a couple of weeks. There are other options for blood pressure medications that have less effect on your ability to exercise. Talk with your doctor about other options if possible.
  • Is the Shred new for you? When I was running and doing the Shred I experienced a lot of knee pain that I had never had before, and haven't had since I quit doing it. It may be that, I think the Shred is hard on joints for some reason, especially if your form is off for things like the squats and lunges.
  • Just don't eat too many of them. The olestra in them will cause "loose stools".
  • This actually isn't accurate. Weight ounces like for dried pasta are not the same as volume ounces for liquids. You need a food scale.
  • Girls can enjoy lifting too! I do find it a little repetitive. I just started the third phase and was really disappointed to discover that it's just workouts from the first and second phase repeated. Also, you do the same leg, cardio and yoga videos through the entire thing. I have really increased my strength, though and…
  • For fruits, veggies and meat that don't have calories listed on them I usually search whatever the name is and then USDA. That will bring up the USDA listed calorie counts and per 100 grams is usually an option. That way you can weigh it out and get a better approximation than 1/2 or 1/4 of something and account for…
  • I found that immodium didn't really work for me. I use Lomotil (diphenoxylate with atropine) on any run over 7 miles. It's like super charged immodium. It's prescription only and is a controlled substance (it crosses the blood brain barrier unlike immodium and it's an opiate so it could be abused). I love the stuff.
  • From what I read Endomondo doesn't actually use your heart rate to determine calories burned. It just uses time and the type of workout that you enter.
  • She didn't say that the sleep specialist was unaware of melatonin the sleep cycle. She said that the scientific evidence doesn't support it's use for insomnia. That is true. There is a good bit of evidence supporting its use for jet-lag and people who are shift workers, but in the studies it didn't do any better than…
  • HRM don't work that way, the equations they use to calculate calories don't work without an elevated heart rate. You're not going to get an accurate calorie reading unless you're doing steady state cardio. At the rate you're going you'd be getting a 4000 calorie burn for the day. Sorry. In order to get a more accurate all…
  • If you go to the Polar website they have a side by side comparison chart of all of their models. I just searched "compare polar heart rate monitors" in google and found it that way. I ended up getting the FT60 because it was on sale and the FT40 and above have a fitness test that estimates your VO2 max, which should give…
  • Your BMI is actually 100% a calculation and there is no error. It is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in meters squared. What it actually means is up for debate though.
  • I would advise against trying to make your own diet plan for someone on Coumadin. Just for your information foods that contain Vitamin K will decrease the INR and decrease the effects of Coumadin. Green leafy vegetables such spinach are the biggest culprits but other foods are high in Vitamin K as well.
  • P90X2 and a great cold weather running shirt.
  • Cheers to that! Merry Christmas!
  • I really hate to be a know it all and point this out because it's not super important, but I couldn't resist. For a food scientist you really screwed up your sugars. High fructose corn syrup is a mixture of fructose and GLUCOSE. SUCROSE (which is a disaccharide of fructose and glucose) is table sugar. HFCS is different in…
  • I'll argue with you!
  • Not sure if you were supporting her or saying that birth control hinders weight loss. That study supports what she said, that Depo Provera (DMPA) is shown to cause weight gain. The girls on oral contraceptives (OC) actually gained less weight then the control group. Also, that study has nothing to do with people actively…
