  • So, maybe my un-love of 5/3/1 is unwarranted and my progress will just be slow from now until...the Senior Games?
  • Well, I may be a Forever Novice by that standard! Ha! But I am also a bit suspicious of the exrx chart. I am not an elite deadlifter by any means...at least judging from meets that I've be to with actual women powerlifters who are doubling my weight while lifting for half the time I've been at it! What I am mostly…
  • Farmer's walks have really helped my grip strength!
  • I only have 45 minutes (from 5:30 when the gym opens to 6:15 when I need to be back at home helping getting the kids ready for school/myself ready for work, etc.). Ideally, I'd have an hour. I do the "beginners" 5/3/1 Wendler's routine. This means I have two compound lifts (around 5 sets each) and then I add just two…
  • I don't do gloves or straps because I can't use that stuff when I compete. I do bring my own chalk and highly recommend it along with mixed grip for heavy deads & putting grip work into the mix. Farmer's walks work well plus they make me feel like a badazz.
  • Steel/Sara: Just driving by to say that you two are awesome. :flowerforyou:
  • This was good for me to read. Thank you!
  • 1. pops or kix? pops! 2. apple jacks or apple cinnamon cheerios? no thank you 3. cinnamon toast crunch or golden grahams? golden grahams 4. honey nut cheerios or honey bunches of oats? honey nut cheeris 5. cocoa puffs or cocoa pebbles? cocoa pebbles 6. fruity pebbles or froot loops? fruity pebbles 7. fiber one or kashi?…
  • Before heavy compound barbell lifting I was squeezing into size 12 jeans at 5'2''. After a year committed to squats, bench and deadlifts, I am now in a size 6 with plenty of room to spare (maybe even 4s actually..hmmm). This is with sensible but not freakish eating habits and with fairly moderate cardio (steady-state…
  • I still find choosing the 2nd and 3rd lifts hard. For my recent team meet, I definitely felt that I "left weight on the platform" and it really bothered me. It bothered me enough to rethink my "avoid red lights" at all costs mentality. For a first meet though, I think it's better to choose numbers that you know you can hit…
  • Hah. I'm still working on 200 lb but I'll be watching all you badasses!
  • 1. Oatmeal 2. Peanut butter 3. Protein powder 4. Sweet potatoes 5. Frozen broccoli florets 6. Frozen green beans 7. Chicken thighs 8. Tilapia 9. Fat free yogurt 10. Chocolate chips
  • I do love Henry. I also like Gregory...Is that out of the running?
  • My take on the Smith Machine for bench is the same as those who criticize it's use for squats. The fixed bar path of the machine doesn't really duplicate what your muscles "should" be doing in an actual bench press. My guess is that the risk of injury is not the same as a machine squat but you won't be getting any…
  • I think it still hurts if you start out more *fleshy* like I did. It does get better with time and practice, like anything else. I think the pads are a bad idea, too.
  • Add egg whites and/or protein powder to your oatmeal. Or trade instant oatmeal for overnight oats made with greek yogurt and a scoop of whey protein.
  • I squat with a barbell in the power cage. If I had didn't have this choice, I would do goblet squats exclusively. http://www.t-nation.com/free_online_article/most_recent/goblet_squats_101
  • I love that it sort of forces you to compete mostly against yourself. For me, I had a Big Deal Competitor in my weight class/age group so that shoved the whole competing against others mentality way down deep.
  • A trainer/coach is a great idea if they are on the same page as you in regard to compound lifts. I started with just books and youtube videos and lots of ego checking in terms of the amount of weight I was lifting. I second the stronglifts plan. I also recommend looking at Mark Rippetoe's youtube videos for those barbell…
  • Re: health --> life expectancy I pulled this off of a NYT article on the bodies of Olympians. You can find it here: http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9805E2D61738F930A3575BC0A96E9C8B63 CHERYL HAWORTH WEIGHT LIFTING, 75+KG CLASS AGE: 25 HEIGHT: 5 9 WEIGHT: 300 lbs. • I don't have a tv set up to watch this but I may stay late at the gym on Monday morning to watch the Women's Weightlifting.
  • My plates must match...If I have a flat 10 lb. plate on one side I absolutely can not have the other side be a 10 lb-er that has the little holes in it.
  • Great results!!
  • I regret being AT ALL concerned with my weigh-in before the meet. I wish I hadn't given a second thought to sodium or water weight or anything. I would have eaten eaten and eaten some more in preparation. I also wouldn't have gotten locked into this mindset of trying to hit my 200 lb. deadlift goal before the meet like it…

  • I agree, mostly, with starting with just the bar to get your form down first. One thing to add to that is that if your gym has training plates (skinny 5 lb. weights that are the same size as the thicker heavier 45 plates) I'd use those to boost the bar into the proper position. If that is not an option, I recommend setting…
  • I weight train in the early morning. When I stick to my goal of drinking 2 liters of water during my workout, then my lifts are consistently better. I am a recent convert to the 20 cup club. With that said, I haven't noticed any magical weight loss as a result. I have been more energetic and less prone to headaches. My…
  • I'm seconding Q's and k's posts. I found Rippetoe's (Starting Strength) instruction really helpful. If you search youtube for Rippetoe then you will find scads of snippets that should be pretty helpful. I will also talk up goblet squats again. I love them for working up to a good form while still getting the benefits of…
  • I need a monstrous bag since I workout in the morning and go straight to work. I had the largest Adidas duffel but it's coming apart at the handle. I am eyeing those mini suitcases on wheels. I "window shop" for The Perfect Bag at ebags.com. It's sick, really.
