  • I agree. There is no one magic solution for everybody. If you drop gluten and feel better I don't know why it makes so many people upset. I dropped gluten last January and felt much better and lost plenty of weight without really exercising. I no longer suffered from my spring or fall allergies and just had more energy in…
  • I lost 24 pounds my first month of eating Primal. It will slow down however. Please make sure you are taking some basic body measurements though. There have been weeks were I didn't lose any weight but I was still losing inches.
  • Been eating Primal since Jan 1 2013 and am down 55 pounds as of this morning. But it's not just about the amount lost for me. 3 weeks into it I started taking body measurements so I could get a rough body fat % measurement. So on Jan 21 I was already down 17 pounds (to 296) when I started measuring and computing body fat…
  • If you are adding coconut oil to your diet for the first time (or greatly increasing your consumption of it) it may cause digestive issues until your body adjusts to it. Heck, just increasing the amount of any fat to your diet will probably cause some issues as your body switches over.
  • Congrats. My work is doing something similar starting next year only there are 5 categories and if you don't meet all of them you need to have a coaching session (by phone) or your insurance costs more. The 5 categories are: Body Mass Index (BMI) Less than or equal to 29.9 Blood pressure Less than or equal to 140/90 LDL…
  • I know when I started I felt like crap for almost a week. I've found I don't really buy boxes of food anymore. The stuff I eat doesn't come in boxes. It's amazing how less full the grocery cart is when you're not hauling around the boxes half filled with air. I take it back, I do get a box of meat from the butcher every…
  • Great job. Maybe now the only time you'll need to see the doctor is when you break something doing something fun.
  • Track some measurements other than weight such as waistline, hips, , body fat %, etc. Doing this will change your body and you will be losing fat and gaining muscle so the pounds falling off will not always happen since muscle weighs more than fat. There are stretches I go through where my weight is staying the same or…
  • IF is just a fancy term for 'skipping a meal'. Personally I don't eat breakfast anymore. This means my last eating is done around 7 or 8 pm in the evening and then I don't eat again until lunch the next day (11 am), so that means I go 15-16 hours typically for my 'fast'. I will say that some days I go get a little hungry…
  • I use the Fit 2 Fat Military Body Fat Calculator (http://www.fat2fitradio.com/tools/mbf/) mainly because it requires less measurements and I'm just using it to measure progress from when I started so I don't really care what my real values are as long as the tool I'm using to do the measurements is the same I can track the…
  • Stay away from the gluten-free replacement foods, they are filled with sugar and other crap. Eat naturally gluten-free foods instead. Paleo/Primal is one way to go. I've been Primal since Jan 1 of this year and have been doing great.
  • I don't know where I heard it but when I started Primal I also started tracking some measurements. I measure my waist, hips and neck so I can do an online body fat calculator. Seeing those numbers continue to go down even if the weight doesn't makes me feel that I am still on track. I take these measurements every Saturday…
  • If I have a huge time crunch and need a meal I usually stop by the grocery store and grab a rotisserie chicken. A whole bird is $5. I get the "Oven Roasted" kind and not one of the flavored ones that probably add a bunch of sugar or BBQ sauce and I bet the bird is probably from a factory farm but it is better than getting…
  • This. Try to find a local butcher. I was pointed to one when I first joined MFP and I can't believe the quality and cost of the meat we get now compared to buying it from grocery stores.
  • Basically right. I'm Primal so I have some dairy. For Primal see Mark's Daily Apple blog. After I found out what I can eat it has been quite simple for me to follow. Almost feels like I'm cheating and still losing weight. Cookies? Bread? Pasta? Not anymore. I'd rather eat steak and eggs and veggies and cheese and nuts.
  • If you are just tracking food and not the macros then you don't need to change. Some people are bothered by the red numbers when they go over a macro though. :)
  • It looks like your macros may be still set to the default MFP ones that are based on the low-fat, high carb model. And you picked a good day. It'll be 22 years for my wife and I this August 3rd.
  • Funny you bring this up. 17 years ago I had the retina in my right eye spontaneously detach. I had to get a scleral buckle to "fix" it. That is basically a band of plastic around my eyeball to force the eye to maintain contact with the retina. They also applied some sort of "glue" to both eyes as my other eye was showing…
  • Before eating Primal falling asleep was difficult for me. Now I hit the pillow and I'm out in minutes. I wonder if this is caused by not eating so much sugar and/or caffeine during the day (in my case at least). I've also been one who can't sleep in, once the sun comes up and I start stirring I can't go back to sleep. I…
  • The biggest thing I noticed when I went Primal (Jan 1 of this year) is that my hunger changed. It went from a "must eat something right NOW" type feeling to becoming aware of hunger and then it nagging me more. It has become a bother more than a command.
  • This. You have developed eating habits over many years and your brain wants to continue them. I try to use MFP as a goal for the day but if I am still truly hungry and MFP says I am out of calories I am going to eat something primal and not grab a bag of chips or cookies or something "bad".
  • I just got my annual results back. I dug out all my old results and put them into a spreadsheet so I could compare. My cholesterol has basically bounced around 182-206 for the last 5 years. My HDL seems to float between 37-46, my LDL (calculated) between 113 and 145. The biggest change I've seen is in my triglycerides,…
  • Last night was a 10oz ribeye from the local butcher, medium rare. It was tasty. I love eating this way. The food is so delicious it feels like "cheating" and makes me wonder why we ever stopping eating this way.
  • Right now I just try the basic primal movements from the primal blueprint. I am so far out of shape I needed to start somewhere and it gives me a plan. It would be 2 sets of 50 wall pushups, 50 wall squats, and 1:30 of hand/knee planks. I try to do chair assisted pullups but it is basically all leg so I'm not sure what I…
  • Check out the documentary 'Fathead' (on Netflix streaming if you have that). It started out as a counter to 'Super Size Me' but the creator (Tom Naughton - I think) found that eating paleo/primal really is better for you. He did this with his doctor and his doctor couldn't believe the results he was getting. After making…
  • I eat primal and my diary is open but I don't really cook via recipes at this point. I just heat up some meat and prep some veggies (sometimes heated, sometimes cold) and eat. Don't buy any diet or low-fat products, use the normal or full fat versions. Don't use margarine, use butter (from pastured cow milk - Kerrygold is…
  • I try to be fully primal all the time. I've found that I've lost the taste for a lot of stuff in the 20%. Since starting this in January I've lost the taste for: cake, pie, oreo's, girl scout cookies, bread, pasta. And when I do try some it does sit well with me (bloating, cramping, etc). Like I read somewhere else, eating…
  • Try to use big pieces of lettuce to replace the GF bread substitute and turn your sandwich into a lettuce wrap.
  • Same here. I never really cooked before but since going Primal I've taken much more interest in the food I'm eating and making. My wife is not primal/paleo but she is noticing how easy it seems to be for me and I think she is thinking about joining the team. Someone asked me if I felt I would be able to stick with this way…
  • Same here. Never been a fruit eater for as long as I can remember. Might have an occasional (once a month or so) banana or apple but that's about it. I'd much rather eat veggies than fruit.
