  • Ran the Rock Canyon Half Marathon today in Pueblo, CO Chip time of 1:39.29 Temp 2*F at the 9am gun after a fresh 1 inch of snow dusted the course last night. It's not a PR, but the course was icy and snowy, and mostly dirt roads. There is also a hill at mile 12.5 that is 0.2 miles long and climbs 125 ft in elevation. 4th…
  • I just got back from an easy 3-mile taper-run for a Half Marathon on Saturday. It's currently 10*F with a 3mph wind. Race weather for Saturday's 9am gun-time is predicting between 0 and 4*F I wore the following for the run today, Feet: injinji toe socks with Darn-Tough light hiker calf socks over them, Merrell Mix-Master…
  • My Mother-In-Law is a seamstress so I showed her the website and had her make a version of it for me. Seriously, hands-down best thing ever for runners. iPhone goes in one side, thin gloves, thin beanie and a gel goes in the other.
  • Not true. 3-site is just as accurate as the 7-site, when performed by a trained assessor. In the hands of a random shmo, all bets are off, but I'm going to assume that's not the OP's situation. Here's a link to ExRx.net with StdDev tables at the bottom of the calculator, with references cited from the studies conducted by…
  • Nope. Not even modified a little. Cutting alcohol out totally isn't a sustainable 'lifestyle change' for me, so it essentially was no different than any other 'fad-diet/food demonizing' baloney. It helps that I only drink maybe 10-12 drinks per MONTH, but to simply say 'No more, ever' is not a 'lifestyle change' that I'm…
  • That last bit isn't unequivocally true. I pretty much only run. My 'lifting' regimen is push-ups, pull-ups, dips, and planks. Body weight only. I do run a lot though. If the OP isn't progressing their run distances, they'll see the benefits taper off. I run about 35 miles per week and increase the mileage for race training…
  • It sounds like you could definitely benefit from some pacing practice. On my 'long runs' (typically 10-12 miles) I reign in my pace two ways: 1) set a threshold on my HR- don't go above 160BPM, which is 80% of max, or the aerobic ceiling for me. Your max HR is likely different. If you don't have a HR monitor, go buy one.…
  • Probably not. Everytime you push to the ragged edge of your physical capabilities you're gonna feel like crap. The catch is: As long as you don't quit working at it, someday that ragged edge will come at the end of miles and miles of racing instead of a handful of minutes.
  • I get it too. If I know the person well and/or just don't feel like getting into it I have, in the past, simply shrugged and said "I think maybe people forget what normal looks like." If I know the person less well and don't give a **** what they think, I just say "Yeah, I eat less food and run alot. seems to be working…
  • Beer. Edit: Alcohol in general.
  • Starbucks Venti Salted Caramel Mocha. 510 calories. An extremely rare moment of no self-control. I couldn't even limit myself to a tall.
  • You're doin' it wrong. All that bacon-weave nonsense just makes it pretty. If you're a real baconoholic you just lay as many strips across the turkey as possible, then when it's baked all nice and crispy-like... YOU TAKE IT OFF AND EAT IT. Then you replace it with more bacon to be cooked and sacrifice it's delicious…
  • Running at anything slower than race-pace isn't making you faster. Go all out, or don't run.
  • Colo Springs here. I ran 8 miles this afternoon. I won't lie. It was kinda miserable. The key is absolutely dress in layers and be prepared to adjust mid-run. I literally take 2 pairs of gloves, light and heavy, as well as two beanies, light and heavy.

  • This is more or less my plan. Once I get a good handle on eye-balling and estimating my food, I'll quit weighing except to occasionally check to see if I'm right. Once I think I can do it right 95% of the time, I'll quit measuring at all.... If I can go for a few months just estimating and logging and still maintain, I'll…
  • Only local brews that aren't distributed aren't in the database. I've found almost everyone I've searched for. If by some chance, it's not then scan the barcode on the bottle or can. Unless it's draught microbrew, then I'd guess based on type and enter something close. If you're pedantic like me, look at the brewery…

  • 1) you need more than 150 calories for breakfast. What is your daily calorie goal? 2) bananas are more than 50 calories. USDA says a small one is 90 and a medium one is 110. Unless you are eating half a banana. Then your calories are correct. but #1 is still true. eat more.

Some people started reading it, not knowing what it was, And we'll continue arguing forever just because This is a thread that never ends, It just goes on and on, my friends! • 4 runs totaling around 35 miles per week (mostly aerobic distance, some Fartlek/tempo for LT or anaerobic threshold) 3 days (sometimes post-run) of sets of push-ups, pull-ups, dips, planks and stretching 1 day of Ashtanga Yoga (video in my living room) I'd say I'm moderately fit. My race times are usually in the top 30% of…
  • Cheating implies that you'll 'get' something without getting caught....You can't pull a fast one on your metabolism. You can binge, but you can't cheat. Me? I plan to binge both Thanksgiving, and Xmas day, maybe even Xmas Eve. I'm gonna log something on those days to keep the streak alive, but I don't care what the…
  • Every once in a while. mostly not. But then, I don't see animals in the clouds, either. I have zero imagination.
  • Start now increasing your weekly mileage, as you can tolerate. don't go over +8-10% from the previous week. Start looking around for a training plan that you like and start it in January. Honestly, If you can run 3.5 now, just 'running more' will get you to 6.2 by May. Just add distance to one of your runs per week and…
  • Spicy Beef Mastsaman Curry, steamed rice, Thai eggrolls, and Coconut Curry Hefeweizen beer. And Pineapple ice cream for dessert. BOOM.
  • I was, admittedly, kind of an odd duck. I got along with everyone, but only socialized with my XC teammates. (only 13 of us- boys and girls) I went to school everyday, but typically did as little as possible to get B's and C's. I wore strange clothes and adopted weird habits just to be different. It wouldn't have been at…
  • That's an allergic reaction. Bananas have a certain protein that some people don't tolerate well. That protein also exists in latex, avocados, some plums, and a few other tropical fruits. You probably shouldn't eat them. Many allergies get worse with more exposure.
  • I bought a pair of REI Powerflyte running tights for running in the winter here in CO.... I wore them *once* on a morning run in the 20's and was on FIRE. I literally stopped mid-run and cuffed the ankles up as far as I could like Capri's to get some cool air on my ankles. Those puppies are WARM. Layered under something…
  • It's totally illogical of me to get so bent over it but I *hate* it when 1) some guys gets on the treadmill next to me and immediately cranks it up to faster than whatever I'm set at. I know, I know...why am I even looking at his speed...? It is pretty funny when they crash and burn after a few minutes because with the 30…
