  • My advice would be to do whatever it was that you've done in prepping for this 5K. If you've eaten before, eat before. If you usually are running at night, and have had meals before, then its harder to judge, but you should know how your body reacts with or without food. If you have clothes that you're comfortable running…
  • I had trouble with both runkeeper and mapmyrun with another app that was also using gps at the time.... Wasn't hosing up my path, but kept shutting the phone down. Not sure how it works with other phones, but I was able to turn off 'location services' for certain apps on my iPhone... Once I limited it to what I needed , it…
  • Thanks all , SDM, that answered my questions very concisely.
  • http://www.runnersworld.com/shoe-finder/shoes-like-mine put your current model in there, and this can recommend similar type shoes if you are happy with the feel of your current shoes.
  • I like mapmyrun the best, but switched to runkeeper for a couple tries because my phone kept shutting off in the middle of a run. Found out it was some other app also using the gps interfering with it, because Runkeeper starting shutting off too and now I'm back to MapMyRun.
  • Try running at a slower pace. You'll get there. I couldn't do more than a mile without being winded in May, but by October I ran my first HM.
  • I'm not a seasoned runner, but I went from running/walking a 5k last year to running 5k to 10k to 13.1mi this year. Once a week I started taking longer runs, slowing down a little, and I was able to work all the way up to the HM distance. Just take it bits and pieces at a time. Once you start going a little bit farther…
  • Congrats to you. I find so much valuable information on these forums too.
  • I don't always do good either. I'm usually not one to dispense advice, but here's my two cents: A - Set realistic goals for yourself. If you think you can't do insanity, then do lower impact exercise. I didn't think I could stick with a program like that, so I decided to do something different. Walk , maybe run if you get…
  • I second that recommendation. Very happy we chose that one last minute. Plus the characters are there for the kids too.
  • IMO, there is no reason not to just simply enjoy yourself while you are on vacation. I'm not saying to make them kick you out of an all you can eat buffet, but you get the idea. Just don't go overboard and you'll come back in the same shape you left in. Make sure you wear comfortable sneakers.
  • Congrats from another Orange fan! Looking forward to this hoops season.
  • If I get up an extra hour early tomorrow (4:15AM) to run, it will be because of this post. I've needed some motivation to set the alarm that early but haven't done it yet....
  • Excitement... ya... that's it! When I heard the wolves/coyotes/coy-dog/whatevertheywere puppies howling the other night I ran much faster than I usually run across that stretch of town. :)
  • Here's a brief summary for me: * - Sedentary job. * - I was always skinny until my mid 20s, I could eat anything (and did). * - I stopped exercising somewhere around my mid 20s (light bulb!) * - Convenient food with busier schedule * - They opened a Chinese restaurant in my tiny town, and I love me some General Tso's. * -…
  • This is my first winter that I'm still trying to lose weight .... and I chickened out from running last night because it got down to 40 degrees by the time I was ready to go, instead pulled out the old recumbent bike and gave that a go instead..... I remembered why I'd rather be running, so I'm giving it another shot…
  • Sounds to me like you've found something that you are passionate about and makes you happy and you want to share that with other people. Also, if you can't share things like that with your friends and family, who can you share them with? And as far as being obsessed, unless you are skipping out on your responsibilities…
  • +1 Gotta walk before you can run, makes sense to me :)
  • Since I started running in the summer, I made it a habit to always take a 16-20 oz bottle of water with me. Normally, I'd only have a little, but it was mostly for the moment that I was done. The moment I'm done, I want to chug liquids like a frat boy. Carrying a bottle with me isn't going to weigh me down that much. I…
  • First off , congrats. After my 2nd 5k this year (the first that I was able to run the whole way), a co-worker who does half-marathons kinda nudged me that way. I didn't take her serious, but she told me I had plenty of time to train for one with her and her husband 8 weeks from then. I didn't take her up on her offer,…
  • MFP sets a "net" calorie amount at a deficit for you to lose X per week. For some of us whose activity level is sedentary, it is very easy to eat back your calories and still lose weight. Most of my weight came off in the summer when I was eating back all my calories, but exercising every single day. I think I may have…
  • I think there are alot of people that run close to every day. It may work for some, but not for others. Alot of recommended training type programs suggest 2-3 rest days or x-train days a week. For me, it was helpful to have the consistency of running every day. I can't do it right now because of life schedules, and its…
  • You will not need a personal trainer for a half, I am proof of that. I just started running in June, where I couldn't do one mile without stopping and this past Sunday I finished my first Half Marathon. You only need to work your way up incrementally once a week for a 'long run'. Basic strategies through Hal Higdon and…
  • congrats to you!!! It is a great feeling, isn't it? There's more to come , trust me! It's good!
  • Wow, you pretty much nailed it! Nicely Done! I might add , try not to go too fast in the beginning. Gotta pace yourself.
  • More than likely, people will recommend you go to a running store. But it sounded like you're looking for websites? I'm in the US so this may not be relevant to you, but I've bought shoes from Shoebuy , ****s Sporting Goods, Amazon with great pricing.
  • Congrats to the OP and all others who are about to do their first or have done their first 5k race recently. Once you start, you may not want to stop. When I could finally RUN my first 5k this year, It just got me started doing all kinds of races. I have done four 5ks since, and now a 10K and HM. We never know what we're…
