  • I would think ice would be worth a shot, and maybe an anti-inflammatory. Take a couple days off, and if it still hurts maybe call the ole' doc or a chiropracter.
  • Good shoes are better than bad shoes. As for Vibrams, mine arrived today, so Ill be building up miles on them over the next few weeks. I love being barefoot anyway, I'm excited to try them out. Most people seem to have good things to say about them
  • When you add workout calories you technically need to subtract out the maintenance cals for that time that MFP has already allocated. (IE, lets say your maintenance is 2400 cals/day or 100 calories/hour. If you workout and burn 400 calories in an hour, you should only be logging 300 of them, because 100 would have been…
  • New shoes fitted at a running store and some non-cotton socks have completely cured me of blisters.
  • Interesting info.

  • No, I am very much serious (well, as serious as I can be in such a situation). I would love a long explanation. My point was not that a hypothesis could not be made that proves that in a controlled environment fat weighs less than muscle...that's easy, as you pointed out. I'm just saying that when taken from a "literal"…
  • You ASSUMING the same volume, but that IS NEVER EXPLICITLY STATED in the problem of "muscle weighs more than fat. If we want to really be smart-*kitten* about it, are they even located in the same place? What if the muscle is sitting on top of Everest and the fat is at sea level? the force of gravity would act differently…
  • Anyone that has access to MFP has access to all the educational tools you could probably ever need if you know where to look. I can accept that not everyone had the support that many of us have been fortunate enough to have. But every day I think that becomes less of a defense. People need to show some self initiative. You…
  • A lot of people use SW as "Starting Weight"
  • Every day and every year a night of drinking affects me more and more and more. I just can't party like it's 1999 any more...(not that I partied in 1999, I was 14 then...) Semi-sad joking aside, I have never had issues quite as extreme as yours sound on a regular basis. it might be worth getting some tests if it has been…
  • Ice and Ibuprofin. And rest between runs.
  • Don't hate me ><
  • I just had bloodwork done the other day for the first time in forever and had perfectly normal potassium levels. According to MFP my "normal" diet is nowhere near the recommended amount...like under half most days. Either the databases are off (as suggested) or Im just super good at potassium regulation internally hah.

  • I ran my first 10k (first race ever) a few weeks ago. I honestly didnt eat any different than I normally would the days leading up. I think I had a cliff bar the morning of the race, and a glass of gatorade at the first aid station. I felt fine....great actually during and after the run. I doubt a 10k is really long enough…
  • Yeah, I think they need to make a lot better use of stickies too. I am shocked that there is no before/after pic sticky in the success forums, and I posted to that regard the other day...didn't seem to catch any mod/admin attention though. The same could be said for informational topics. Get a sticky at the top of each…
  • Theres also a million posts every day about "I went down a pant size," or "I am stuck at a plateau" or "Should I eat my exercise calories?" Should all of these be nuked too? I have only been here for a month and I am noticing this. When an entire community is focused on a fairly narrow topic in the grand scheme of things,…
  • Nothing wrong with trying to educate people. Are you saying it's OK to breed ignorance? You don't necessarily need to nitpick someone's grammar at the detriment of the topic at hand, but I have never had an issue with people pointing out inacuracies in my posts. P.S. I assume at least part of this is directed toward the…
  • I would say this thread is relatively tame compared to a lot of what you can stumble across out there haha. Pet peeves are such for a reason. If everyone were irked by the same things, none of them would exist. Things that annoy the holy hell out of me might be the entire foundation of someone elses life. (not going to go…
  • More rambling. On a similar note, weight and mass are not interchangeable in the first place, which is the foundation of all of these other technical inaccuracies. Everyone says "I weigh 100 kg." That is technically incorrect, because a kilogram is a unit of mass, NOT weight in scientific terms. It should be, "I have a…
  • I semi-retract my previous statement, because I do have plenty of pet peeves about commonly accepted but still technically incorrect phrases. This does not happen to be one of the ones that bugs me too much, but if it does you I can totally understand. What if the argument was that muscle (on Jupiter) weighs more than fat…
  • This is pretty much how I do it. When I'm lazy I use the kirkland canned chicken, that works well too. Guess not the best if sodium is on your watch list though
  • I see nothing wrong with saying fat weighs less than muscle. It is inferred that you are referring to a proportionate volume. If someone said "a pound of fat weighs less than a pound of muscle," well then we have an issue.
  • More info....the about website uses the Harris-Benedict formula. Women: BMR = 655 + (9.6 x weight in kilos) + (1.8 x height in cm) - (4.7 x age in years) Men: BMR = 66 + (13.7 x weight in kilos) + (5 x height in cm) - (6.8 x age in years) MFP uses the Mifflin St Jeor Equation. Male: BMR = 10×weight + 6.25×height - 5×age +…
  • Are you using the same activity level when you calculate on both sites? Edit: I did the calculations on about.com and used the same lifestyle multiplier as I have here and my numbers were within like 30 calories of eachother. And that is likely because when I set my goals here I was a couple lbs heaver than I am…
  • I just drink my coffee black...
  • Why couldnt you just take smaller portions? I hardly consider steak and a salad to be a bad meal decision unless you down a 26 Oz hunk of meat and load up your potato with butter and sour cream. Avoid dessert and skip the chips if you wish. As for the question you asked, I don't think it would be a problem to bring your…
  • I've been on a couple..Watch what you eat during the day, because the dinners are usually AMAZING, so try to save room for them if you can. I explored every dang inch of the boat and avoid the elevators. Both I have been on had a jogging track too..that's interesting because half the time you are running into winds that…

  • Lucky bugger! haha. I have a friendd who is like that though. He wants to gain some weight, eats like a machine, and just can't. It's crazy. As others have said, more protein is a good start, and I second the protein shake idea if he doesnt really enjoy "eating" breakfast.
  • Interesting. Did you come across any links as to the variablity of that test's results with actual "lab administered" testing in the same individuals? Seems odd to estimate oxygen capacity based on heart rate, but I suppose it is better than nothing.
in HRM Comment by Dcgfeller June 2011
  • Not to get into the nitty gritty of calorie calculation, Vo2max is basically the amount of oxygen a particular individual is able to move through their system over a period of time. Edit: its also not anything that you can test very accurately yourself as far as I am aware. Need to get tests and whatnot. (please correct me…
