Rain shell/jacket recommendations
I know there are some gear addicts in here... I'm looking for rain jacket recommendations. My 15yr-old Marmot finally called it quits. I don't have any good outdoor shops near me, so I'll be researching and ordering online, probably from REI. Seems like everyone has their own proprietary material/coating now, so I'm not…

New bike advice
I'm about ready to buy a new bike... but what bike do I buy? The one that will get the most use (a new road bike), or the one that will having the biggest impact on my riding (a new mtn bike)? Backstory... I've got a 56cm Specialized Roubaix roadbike that is roughly 12 years old. I've upgraded the wheels and drivetrain in…

How long, and how many?
I occasionally find myself wondering what happened to certain MFPers, and whether or not they are still around but under different names/accounts. So... How long have you been on MFP, and how many accounts/user names have you had? Me... 10ish years... 2 different accounts. This one for about 5 years now.

silver linings
I listened to Matthew McConaughey's Greenlights yesterday, and I'm reminded that attitude and mindset can have a dramatic impact on how you experience your experiences. And as someone that naturally tends towards sad and skeptical, I thought this could be a good exercise. The situation: Living in the northeast US, it's…

what show/series are you watching?
Similar to the last movie thread... What show/series are you watching, or have you recently finished? The Politician (netflix) - just OK Unbelievable (netflix) - good, but not a must binge.

the last post you liked/hugged/inspired/disliked... WHY?
You don't have to say what post/comment it was, but WHY did you click insightful / inspiring / like / hug / dislike?

Road bike fit and buying online/direct
My primary road bike has always been a touch too big for me. Back when I was riding more, in better shape, and a bit lighter, the fit issues were only enough to be an annoyance, never an actual problem. But now it's enough to make me not want to ride. And that seems like a good reason to buy a new bike. I'm still in the…

backpacking tent recommendations
I'm not new to camping, but I am new to having to hike/carry in all my camp gear. Is there anything I should be looking for in a backpacking that would different from regular car/drive-up camping? Obviously size/weight become more important, as does a good footprint... anything else that I'm not thinking about because I've…

Rules for DMs tangent -- What's a "good friend"?
A tangent from the Rules for DMs thread... How do you use the Friends function within MFP? Is it akin to FB? Do you interact regularly? Are you a drive-by liker, or do you take the time to comment? What makes someone a good friend? What do you hope for from your feed? Personally, I rarely look at my feed. The adds in the…

alcohol subscription boxes
Has anyone ever done one/any? Suggestions? I'm mainly interested in straight liquors, not mixed drinks, and Flaviar looks pretty well suited to me. But $40 per box (quarterly) for three 1.5oz samples seems kinda steep.

Garmin Connect - where to see recovery time?
After I finish a workout with my 935 (running or biking, mostly), it tells me how much time I will need to recover from that workout. I don't wear my garmin much UNLESS I'm working out... is there a way to see that recovery time via Garmin Connect?

Favorite Actors
Who are some of your favorite actors, and what are some of their best movies/roles? Edward Norton - Motherless Brooklyn Jessica Chastain - Molly's Game Daniel Day Lewis - There Will Be Blood Not an actor, but... Aaron Sorkin - everything. Absolutely everything.

cyclists - training for events
I'm kicking around the idea of riding Mt Lemmon in AZ, possibly this coming spring. Since I can't easily replicate this type of ride where I live (we simply don't have climbs like that here), I'm likely going to train based on miles (volume) and frequency. I don't know if this coming spring is reasonable for this ride, but…

Self-identity
I'm curious... How much of your identity is tied to your health/fitness? When I stopped racing a few years ago, I struggled losing that part of myself... both with the loss of goal/direction, but also with the loss of belonging/group. It was the manner in which I could fairly easily measure myself, compare myself to…

zwift users
I'm thinking (again) about taking a stab at Zwift this winter. My options are my bike on a dumb trainer with speed and cadence sensors, or a stationary bike at my gym that can measure speed/cadence/power. But in both cases, Zwift won't be able to control resistance. So when I'm riding, I will have to manually adjust…

Question about changes to road bike fit...
I have 2 bikes - one is a racier 54, the other is a slightly more relaxed 56. The 54 fits/feels great, so I'm trying to adjust the 56 to fit/feel more like the 54. Since I can't change things like ST angle or HT angle, I'm looking mostly at TT length, reach, and stem length. Should I be looking at any other measurements?…

when building endurance - frequency vs duration?
When the goal is to build overall endurance, I know the benefits of gradually increasing the duration of your workouts. But what role does frequency play? Say...* 2 workouts per week - 1 "comfortable" and 1 "long" -vs - * 3 workouts per week - 3 "comfortable" and 0 "long" -vs - * 3 workouts per week - 2 "comfortable" and 1…

C25k - ok for trails? Dogs? Trail dogs?
Any reason C25K wouldn't be suitable to getting my dogs trail running with me? It's mostly for my own peace of mind, knowing they can do the time/distance rather than anything else. They go with me a lot as it is, but we've overdone it a few times resulting in some pretty sore/stiff dogs. They are older dogs (both rescues,…

[cycling] formula for watts to calories?
Is the a generally accepted formula for converting watts to calories after a ride/spin? I did some googling, and the only article I found seemed more complicated than I expected, and the result of the formula differed from what my spin bike gave me by about 20%. Today's spin was 50 minutes and averaged 125w. Bike told me…

Keys to wealth, success, happiness, and love
OK, so maybe not all of those things, but... Those of us who have been at this for a while realize a few basic fundamentals* Weight management at it's most basic is about energy balance, or calories in vs calories out. * Overall health is a related but tangential conversation to weight management. * Long term success has a…

Anyone running GraySkull LP?
I've been reading about it a bit today, and while it looks good on paper, the claims that it is a bit more hypertrophy-focused than other beginner 5x5 programs don't make sense to me. The frequency isn't any greater (and is probably less than some programs), nor is the overall volume. What am I missing? I'm planning to run…

tips for introducing veggies into diet
First of all, the need for this post is coming from a VERY emotional place for me, so I'll probably do a lot more reading/listening than posting/responding... simply to keep the thread from getting bogged down (or shut down if I get angry/emotional). So if I'm not replying to your posts... I am still here, reading, trying…

garmin watches and navigation cues
What am I missing here? I've got a 935 (light duty version of the Fenix 5) that I will occasionally load routes onto for navigation. I've tried building the routes in both RideWithGPS (preferred) and in Garmin Connect. In both cases, I don't seem to have control over when the watch cues me and when it doesn't. I typically…

the "look, I have boobs" selfie angle
It was duck lips for a while, now it seems to be having the camera above/pointing downward, often times with revealing shirts/tops. Now, I'm all for "if you've got it, flaunt it" mentality, and people should be able to dress and selfie however they want. But how do people rectify this new trend with the bigger picture of…

The psychology of needing to eat until stuffed - a discussion
I knew a few people here have struggled with this I also know it's probably not an easy/simply/clean discussion... not if X then do Y. But I also know there are some smart, thoughtful, experienced people here. I also know that there is a HUGE wealth of experiences on the board. So I put this out there... Does anyone have…

Training to strengths vs weaknesses
I'm just curious if/how people allow their own individual strengths or weaknesses to impact their training. I'm thinking about this in the context of strength training, but it probably applies across the board. Do you train specifically to improve in areas you see as weaknesses? Do you focus more on strengths, and try to…
