garmin watches and navigation cues

What am I missing here?

I've got a 935 (light duty version of the Fenix 5) that I will occasionally load routes onto for navigation. I've tried building the routes in both RideWithGPS (preferred) and in Garmin Connect. In both cases, I don't seem to have control over when the watch cues me and when it doesn't.

I typically use cues when trail running and, ideally, I'd like to map out a route, remove all cues (but keep the route), and add my own cues/prompts based on when/where I want them. Is that possible?

RideWithGPS will let you edit/add/remove cues, which should remain when the device loads the .fit or .tcx file you export. unless there is some special quirk specific to the 935.

Note: you will have to load the file manually via USB connection... if importing to Garmin Connect (to later send wirelessly via BT), Garmin Connect will remove the Cues.

Ah, maybe that's the piece I've been missing...

I haven't done this in a while. But it always worked when I did it. Plan the route in Ride With GPS, export, use Garmin Training Center to translate the file type, then load it onto the watch with the USB cable, copying it to the hidden NEWFILES folder.

JaVaWa RTWtool also works well for converting .tcx to .fit if needed (some of the Garmin devices will take either, some won't). RideWithGPS can now export .fit files (newer feature, but it might be premium version only).
