Is promoting weight loss dangerous?
Consider this: -The human body has evolved to favor weight gain in order to avoid starvation. -Calorie deprivation experiments have shown that even fairly small reductions in food intake can cause psychological distress, including hoarding behaviors. -Eating disorders are the deadliest of all mental illnesses due to high…

Uses for Gritty Protein Powder
I bought a small tub of non-dairy vanilla protein powder and I’m finding it unpalatably gritty with a strong artificial sweetener aftertaste. My hope was to use it for chia pudding, but it’s noticeable. Any ideas how I can use this up? I’m not committed to consuming a specific amount of protein powder - I just want to bump…

Hello!
I see that this group has been dormant for a while, but I’m writing this post in the hopes that it will become active again. My story is that I’m a cook who got tired of neglecting my health. It’s a lot of physical labor, but none of it is cardiovascular exercise. And then we spend so much time cooking for others, we don’t…

Controlling the hangries
I'm 4 months postpartum and breastfeeding. Last time, I couldn't shift any weight until kiddo weaned 100% because, if I tried to cut calories, I would feel faint. This time, I'm trying to watch what I eat so I at least don't overeat, but I still find myself getting hungry between meals. Any tricks to reduce the cravings?…

Vegetarian meal ideas
Hi, all. I want to reduce the amount of meat my family eats. The problem is that we need to eat relatively low-carb. Not keto-level, but the dietitian recommended no more than one carb-heavy item per meal (for example, no bread if we're having pea soup). Can you guys share your favorite low-carb vegetarian recipes with me?

How to burn 600 calories in under 10 minutes
Donate blood! Here are some facts about blood donation: 1. It takes approximately 600 calories for your body to replace the blood you lose while donating. 2. 5% of the population must donate once a year in order for a country to maintain adequate blood supplies. 3. Blood supplies tend to run especially low during holiday…

Supplement question
Is anyone else taking kelp to supplement their iodine? What brand/dosage do you use? I recently bought a different brand of kelp, and discovered that it is half the dosage of the Solgar kelp, but both brands recommend one pill a day. What the heck?

Full fat or low fat?
Do you guys go for full-fat dairy or low-fat dairy? I'm interested in hearing what people have to say since I grew up in a country where nearly all the dairy was low fat, but am currently living in a country where full-fat is standard.

Any emotional fasters out there?
A lot of people on here write about being emotional eaters - eating because they are upset rather than because they are hungry. I find that I'm a bit of the opposite. If I'm upset about something, I need to force myself to eat. Sometimes I even wait until I feel exhausted from low blood sugar. Does anyone else do this?

I've been bad. :(
Hi everyone. I'll try to keep this simple. Doctor #1 did a blood panel, determined that I was borderline hypothyroid, and, given my family history, decided to put me on a supplement regimen. Before he could do a follow up panel, my insurance changed and I went to Doctor #2, who said that everything was normal (ha, right)…

Please help my crazy hamstrings
I have the worst hamstrings in the world. They are always incredibly tight, which has a huge impact on my flexibility. I can't touch my toes. I can't sit up with my back straight when I'm doing a butterfly stretch. I'm worried that it will one day kill my lower back. Does anyone have an ideas what I can do to get these…

What do you look for in a hike?
What do you look for when you decide where to go hiking? Is it the views? The plant and animal life? The level of the challenge? I like to hike trails that include streams or ponds for swimming. I also enjoy seeing archaeological sites and being able to pick fruit from wild trees.

Bruise healing time?
How long do you guys find it takes for your martial arts bruises to heal? Before I started krav maga, if I had a bruise, it would be more or less gone in a few days. Now my bruises take over a week, and I don't know if it's because I'm getting more serious bruises or what.

Scared to gain fat instead of muscle
I'm getting close to my goal, and would like to start focusing on toning and maybe even building muscle. However, I'm scared to gain mostly fat instead of muscle. My main worries are: a) I find it really hard to get more than 17% of my calories from protein b) I'm not the greatest at being consistent with my exercise (yes,…

Advice for half-day "training camp"?
My krav maga instructor is doing a half-day "camp" on Friday with training from 8am to 1pm! I am super-excited, but a little nervous at the idea of a solid five hours of training (minus at least one short break). Classes are usually 1.5 hour twice a week. Does anyone have any advice to keep me going during an extended…

Carrots will kill you
Did you know that carrots are just mutated Queen Anne's lace? Carrots do not grow naturally in the wild! So you shouldn't eat them, because they are genetic mutants and will therefore kill you.

Questions about aged beef
I bought a bunch of aged beef shoulder because my supermarket had it on sale. So now my question is, how do I cook aged beef differently from regular beef? And does anyone have any good beef shoulder recipes (must be dairy-free)?

Super-annoying, stressful NSV
I bought a dress for my sister's wedding while visiting my parents in the spring. I left it at my parents' house, then went back home blissfully certain that that was all taken care of. Yesterday, after I came in for the wedding, I figured that I should try on the dress just to make sure it still fits after I've lost so…

Spicy Chinese Noodle confusion
I bought one of those instant ramen noodle things (yes, I know, shut up). However, the nutritional label is very confusing. The container lists nutritional information for "per 100gr" and "prepared meal." The container is 70 grams, yet the "prepared meal" listing contains several times more of every nutrient than the "per…

Anyone else in Israel?
I guess we're on a Mediterranean diet all the time. ;) Actually, I'm only half-kidding. Being here means a whole different range of food products in the supermarket, and it would be great to have someone to share info and tips with. So, is anyone else here based in the Eretz?

Kashrus questions
Sorry to start a second topic so soon after starting the first topic. I've effectively been eating dairy out for nearly 10 years, but now for the first time in my life have an actual kosher kitchen. Yay! I'm trying to eat more home-cooked meals in an effort to eat healthier, and so I want to cook food in bulk and freeze…

Spooky Halloween NSV
I was fitted for a dress for my sister's wedding in April. The wedding is in early November, right after Halloween. Today I counted how many Halloween oreos I would have to eat between now and the wedding (if I was otherwise eating at maintenance) in order to gain enough weight to be heavier than when I was fitted for the…

Protein shakes? ::sad::
So, I'm basically not getting enough protein, no matter what i do, and it makes me sad. A thought was to start looking into protein shakes. I have two reservations, though. The first is that I don't like the idea of getting nutrients from "fake food." The second is that I can't have too much sugar or soy in my diet. Anyone…

Looking for advice on what to do next
Hi everyone. I joined MFP a few months ago with two goals: 1) to become fitter and stronger, and 2) to lose the 20-25 lbs I gained over the course of three years. Right now, I am 7 lbs above my weight before I stated gaining, and 12 lbs above my minimum desired weight. As a result, I am starting to think about questions…

Tasty thing I made this weekend
I made Greek-inspired grilled chicken breast for a dinner party over the weekend that was super-tasty, so I thought I would share it here. Take chicken breasts. Marinade in lemon juice with just a splash of olive oil. Season with oregano and grill. The only change I would make in the future would be to use chicken…

Randomly ravenous?
Here I thought I was a big calorie-counting know-it-all, but now I have something that has me stumped. All this week, I have been incredibly hungry for no apparent reason. I've been snacking constantly. The only thing I can possibly think of is that, in an attempt to overestimate, I massively underestimated my calorie burn…

massage hoop?
I bought a hula hoop that is also supposed to give you a massage while you use it (it has bumps along the inside). But I'm finding that mostly it just hurts. Has anyone used a hoop like that before? Should I give it a chance and get used to it, or should I just consider this a failed experiment and buy a different hoop?
