Hip Joint Problem when dead lifting
So, I have a weird problem and this is where I've got answers before for weird things. The background. I sprained an ankle this summer, quite badly. Ended up taking 3 weeks off lifting and was limping for nearly six weeks. It is still not right. That isn't the problem though. With the limping, I started having lower back,…

OHP Problem
I found the answer to increasing, I do it in small increments and have been moving up, one pound at a time. I'm at 109, which for me is a pretty good progression. Here's my problem: my wrists hurt. A lot. So, how does one gain wrist strength and how do I do this without compromising my OHP progress? Any ideas would be…

Setting up to lift at home
Our small local gym was purchased by new owners. Loved the old ones, hate the new ones. It has come to a head and I cannot continue to go there and work out. It no longer feels 'safe' to me. In order to keep working out and lifting, I'm going to have to put together a home gym. Any brands of racks/weights, etc. to avoid or…

Squats: How low should you go?
I started off at parallel (or almost there), then asked husband to help with form. So, he watched videos and read Starting Strength (technical nerd that he is). In helping with form, he made me go all the way down (butt almost on the floor). Now that my weights are getting heavier, I'm going a little less far than I was…

All set up to lift at home
I even ran my two big boys (11 and 12) through workout A. I've got a squat cage, bench, and about 400 pounds of weights, oly bar and a curl bar. Weights and bars cost me about 200 bucks, the rest, well, let's just say it costs about a year's gym membership, but we'll do it safely. Now, we'll see if I can figure out this…

Pain from squats
Not from the movements or the weight, but from the bar across my back/shoulders (that's a hard area to define). I'm getting bruising there where the bar rests, in any case. Will this go away eventually? Grow a callus or something or will I get used to it? Any advice would be welcomed!

Phase 2: WTF?
OK, so today, husband came with me to go over the phase 2 exercises. He looks at the book and ensures that my form is what it is supposed to be, once I've done each movement several times, I can rely on muscle memory. That isn't the point of this post. What is is that I don't know if I can do phase 2 at all. Period. First…

Severe Elbow pain
Anyone have this issue? After lifting yesterday, I had some soreness in my elbow. Now, when I rotate my arm out, even a little bit, I have really, really bad pain. Tomorrow is a lifting day and I'm thinking of taking an unscheduled day off due to the pain. Any ideas as to what I might do for this? I've iced it and that…

Qustion for the menfolk on lifting
My husband has decided to go to the gym with me. He wants to do lifting too. He's disturbed that over the years his strength seems to be going down, since his job is not very physical these days. He hasn't done that before, so what is the best reference out there for a beginner man? I am using NROLFM, but him not being a…

Kind of a dumb question
Do you really do this only 3 days a week? I am at the gym 5 times a week usually, and am a little bit OCD in that I like to do the same thing each time. So, will it hurt to do it five times a week or should I keep to every other workout? I've been doing a hodgepodge until today. My husband is coming with me and my book so…

Another question
So, today I went and husband watched my form as I went through the stage one workouts (A and B) . I did two sets of both of them while he watched to check form. Turns out, having good posture overall makes form easier, so thanks Grandma! In any case. I had been doing squats with dumbbells. I was able to get my thighs…

My hands hurt
Really. When I'm lifting, I'm managing fine, except that my hands hurt. I'm talking about the area between my knuckles and wrist. It just hurts. Any ideas either what I'm doing wrong or how I can make it better? Thanks!

Wow. Just WOW. Thank you EMTWL!
Wow. I have been at this since January 2nd. I lost at first, then levelled off to losing nothing on the vlcd I started on. MFP gave me a bump in June and I was losing about a half a pound per week. Started weights three weeks ago. I'm still not lifting as much as some of you are, but I'm doing more than I thought I could.…

Can this work for those of us who are really large?
Warning: Sorry, this is very long and I'm a confused mess, so please be patient and bear with me. I've been dieting for most of my life. In January, I started one where I ate 8 oz. of protein a day and all the raw veggies I could choke down. But, that was it. Oh, and a protein powder, almond milk, and frozen strawberry…

Week 2 of Lifting
And as we were getting dressed this morning, my husband said "Hey! You've got muscles in your arms, I can SEE them!". So, it must be doing something. I have some actual definition in my upper arms/shoulder area. I'm still enormously fat, mind you, but I have some muscle now too.

Kind of a Dumb Question
So, I think I'm doing this wrong. I did my first lifting working out Sunday. I was really, really sore the next day. The can barely move kind of sore. Then, it passed and I went yesterday for my next workout. I was fatigued, but not in pain. I made sure I ate plenty of protein and drank lots of water and never got to the…

What should your "net" be at the end of the day?
I've been confused as to what my "net" on my home page should be at the end of the day. I have myself set at low activity so I can eat more the days I exercise. Having some trouble getting in enough protein, but working on it. Usually eat too many carbs, also working on it. But, still confused as to what that little box…

First Day with no exercise since I actually started EMTWL
So, after waffling for a few weeks, I started doing this on Sunday. Since then, I've lost 1.2 pounds. I never changed my daily calories on the site, just ate back my exercise calories because my daily exercise calories took me to within 100 calories or so of my target anyway. Today, I'm taking an exercise break, because…

Is it OK
To use the machines at the gym to start with weights? Our gym is very small and I'm often the only person there. We don't have a personal trainer available, so I don't have anyone to check for form or that I'm doing it right. I've used the weight machines in the past and do now, almost every day. Also, how do you know when…

Reading this and want to try it, but scared to go there
Hi. I'm fat. I'm HUGE. I've read through this, got my numbers and was ready to start, but I'm afraid. I'm afraid that this works for moderately big people who need to lose that last 30 pounds or so, but not for people like me. So, from using several of the calculators and taking the lowest and highest of them: My BMR is…
