Anyone used those biggest loser food/calorie scales?
I saw one in a store today, $40 but it looks like it has a feature that accesses a database and actually tells you the cals depending on what food you put on it. I thought that was kind of cool. Anyone used one? I was just wondering if they are accurate or cheap gimmicks?

Weight loss while on Fluoxetine
Took me a while to decide whether to post this or not, but eventually I decided, what the hell. I've been on fluoxetine for a little over a year now. With my current weight loss (23lbs down over the course of the last 7 weeks) I've noticed that my emotions have been ummm, how to say it... expanding. The other day I bawled…

Insanely high intensity people at the gym
When I go to the gym I often see a woman doing some kind of super high intensity workout in the stretching room. It looks a bit like zumba on steroids I guess... lots of reaching and jumping. The thing is, this woman (normal weight by the looks of it) is pushing herself to quite scary limits by the look of it. She's bright…

Dear fiftysomething naked guy in the gym locker room...
...I'm not a prude. Really, I'm not. I understand it's a locker room and all and I'm cool with that. But do you really have to shove your sweaty post-workout junk in my face for ten minutes while we talk? How 'bout you pull on a pair of boxers and THEN we can talk about how unseasonably warm the winter has been. Cheers!…

Tomato soup recipes?
Anyone got any tasty ones? I'm particularly interested in lower sodium alternatives to the canned Campbell's and Progresso varieties. :drinker:

Tell us about your worst ever slip up day...
What was your worst ever slip up day? And how did you not turn a slip up into a give up? I'm especially interested in hearing from people who have survived many slip ups and still persevered regardless. I had my first major binge since Jan1 last night and I think I consumed probably 1200 cals over my daily limit. I feel…

Not weight training opposing muscle groups - myth?
When I was in my early 20's I got on a big muscle building kick (didn't last... obviously), and I subscribed to Muscle and Fitness magazine for a while. This was back in the early 90s. I remember one of the big recommendations back then was to avoid working opposing muscle groups on the same day - i.e. don't work your…

Give me something interesting to do with Eggplant
On a whim I bought an eggplant from the grocery section. I'm an Eggplant virgin. Any great recipes?

How do you log Chinese Takout?
Of all the foods I can think of, Chinese takeout seems to be the hardest to get an accurate log with. Say you get a chicken and mixed veg with a side of steamed rice... the rice is easy enough to account for by weight, but how on earth do you know what the individual restaurant put into the main dish. It could be a wildly…

Can you share purchased songs across ipods?
My wife has an ipod nano and now I've started at the gym I want one too. We like much of the same music and she has already purchased hundreds of songs and albums. If I like the same song she has, is there a way to share it to my own ipod or would I have to purchase everything all over again (because that seems like a bit…

Gimme your healthy recipe website recs!
For the longest time I based all my kitchen adventures on the wonderful allrecipes.com. But without the paid membership to that site, the more healthy recipes are somewhat lacking. Someone on here told me about skinnytaste.com and I've got to say I'm impressed so far. Any other healthy recipe sites you guys couldn't live…

Protein supplements to hit 40 30 30 macros?
I'm trying to eat in the zone with my macros set to 40 carb, 30 fat, 30 protein. I've been coming in fairly close on the fat, a little over on the carbs but that's my fault, but my protein has been quite a bit under - even on days where I'm specifically trying to eat more. Does anyone use protein supplements to reach a…

Anyone seen the documentary "Forks over Knives"
What are your opinions on it? (for those that haven't seen it, it provides a fairly convincing argument that an entirely plant based, whole foods diet can not only prevent, but completely reverse a number of western diseases. Being someone who likes to hear all sides, I'd really like to hear some counterpoints)

What's the best bread?
I know bread will be one of the things to fall by the wayside as my healthy eating gradually improves, but rigt now I'm just not ready to give it up  At the minute I use Healthy Life 35 calorie, low carb bread. But I was wondering is there a better option on the supermarket shelves? I would actually take a few more…

Just wanted to double-check trainers heart rate recs with yo
Had my orientation with the personal trainer at the Y today. She recommended that for my age (m, 37) I should get my heart rate to between 110 and 156 and keep it there for 20-30 minutes. I just wanted to check with you advanced exercise folks if this sounded about right?

Yet another "help me set my macros" thread...
My stats are M, 250lbs, 5'8", diabetic, hypertensive. I'm going to the gym 2-3 times a week, mild workout at present - just getting used to moving more. I usually spend 30 mins treadmill at 3.5mph, 3.0 incline, 10-15 mins on the eliptical or bikes, and light strength training. Main goal is weight loss. Goal weight is…

A more accurate bathroom scale?
Anyone know of reputably accurate brands of bathroom scale? The one I've currently got gives me wildly different readings depending on its floor placement. This morning I got 250.2, then 248.1 just by moving the scale ONE INCH to the left. It's one of those middle-priced white plastic digital ones that you can find at…

Anyone know if there are other "Sarah Haley" dvd's?
I love the DVD that came with my Reebok resistance band. It's a perfect level for where I'm at right now. The instructors name is Sarah Haley and I was wondering if anyone knows if there are more DVD's by her? I can't seem to find anything online and I'd hate to get in a rutt doing the same workout everyday...

Quandary about MFP settings
Question for the gurus! So since I started "dieting" at the beginning of the year, I've gone from being definitely sedentary to i guess what you would call "lightly active" - 30 minute walk each day weather permitting, gym once or twice a week, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, parking far from the stores etc. My…

Eggplant Bake
Tried this for the first time last night and it was a total winner. It replaced the usual carby side serving on my wife and I's plates (rice, potatoes etc) with something of a similar texture, way lower carbs and much more delicious... 1/2 an eggplant, cut into 1/4" thick round slices 1 egg lightly beaten 1/2 cup lower…

Possible to measure accurate BMR with a heart rate monitor?
Could you theoretically leave a hrm running all day long on a resting day and get a BMR reading that was more accurate than the online calculators?
-
Please teach me about HRM's
I'm new to the whole exercise lark. I see a lot of folks using heart rate monitors and saying they're a more accurate method of measuring calories burned during exercise. Can someone in the know explain why that is, and maybe give me a few tips as to which brand is best to buy? Thanks!

Gym Shoes?
I just joined the Y. Never been a member of a gym in my life. I was wondering if there's a particularly common recommended brand of training shoe to go for? Is there anything specific to look for in a gym shoe? Gel soles? Breathability? Thanks!

To eat before or after a workout...
This morning I decided to rack up a bit of research on if it is better to eat before or after a workout. The answers I came across were not surprisingly divided almost straight down the middle. Some said eat before a workout, some said afterwards. However, when I considered the sources, the majority of sites I would…

Great article from yesterdays Wired magazine
Great article from yesterdays Wired magazine (http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2012/01/the-willpower-trick/) The Willpower Trick By Jonah Lehrer January 9, 2012 January is the month of broken resolutions. The gyms are packed for a week, Jenny Craig is full of new recruits and houses are cleaned for the first time in ages.…

What's the science behind sudden appearance changes?
Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this. In my past weight loss adventures I noticed that I can lose lbs steadily without too much of a change in physical appearance, then, about 4 or 5 weeks in, my body seems to suddenly shift overnight and the next day people are all like "hey, you lost weight!". It's not just…

How many of you have had success treating it like a game?
I was wondering how many of you have had success treating it all like a game? I ask because as I examine my previous successes and failures, those times when I succeeded for extended periods of time were always somehow fun. There was no "diet" per se, and not even anything as dry as "lifestyle change" or "habit change". It…

Anyone use the Y?
The wife and I are considering joining the YMCA in the new year. For use of the gym and the added bonus of the pool. It seems like a good choice for an out of shape couple who want to avoid "hard body" gyms where we might feel too judged and get put off. Ayone here use the Y? Do you find it worth it? Any experiences or…
