Thoughts on Floor Press
My bench is lagging behind my other lifts and I've read the floor press can help improve your bench (I did see one discussion saying it's generally not worth adding, but that was an outlier). I added it to the end of my press day today and enjoyed it much more than I expected; dumbbell single arm. Looking for thoughts on…

Bent Over Row: EZ Bar vs Straight Bar
I initially started rowing (years ago) when I only had dumbbells. Once I picked up a barbell and got more serious about lifting I switched to a straight bar. It's easy to notice the potential difference in allowable range of motion when moving from DB to BB. I ended up getting an EZ bar as a package deal when I was looking…

Pinpointing Your Weak Point
Curious as to how others that lift to failure or near failure feel when they reach that point. This came to mind when thinking about which isolated lifts to incorporate into my program. For example, during my bench I start to feel my left bicep fatiguing first. When I squat, though I believe it's more general glute…

De-rusting and Painting Plates
I picked up a set of plates (Marcy Grip 45s, 25s, 10s, & 5s) along with an Olympic bar for $130 and everything has rust to a certain extent. From what I've read, you can scrub the plates with a wire brush, then give them a vinegar bath for 2-3 days to take care of the rest, then paint them. Anyone have experience with…

Bent Over Rows with Curl Bar
Tried bent over rows with a curl bar today. Elbows flare out a little more, feeling is more natural. Control over the bar feels much better. Just wandering if this is a thing and and thoughts.

Outdoor Lifting/Working out in the Cold
Need some help gurus. I'm moving and will have to set up my power cage in my carport (covered, but open air/3 open walls) until I get my workout palace (shed) delivered and up and running. It will be insulated, heated, etc,. but that may need be for a few months. In the meantime, I need help/ideas on lifting in the cold.…

Pull Days: Moving Dead lifts before Rows?
During my pull days (every other day) I start with rows at 25% 10rm weight x 10 , 50% 10rm x 10, then 100% 10rm x 2 sets before moving to dead lifts 100% 10rm x 2. Don't think it necessarily matters, but FWIW my dead lift 1 RM is approaching 400lbs and row is approaching 200. Both are progressing as scheduled (10%+…

Weight Load & Distance from Center / Using Unfamiliar Equipment
During the holidays I'll be using a commercial gym (YMCA) with weight machines and Olympic barbells & weights. I currently use a 6' standard bar & weights for squats, deadlifts, rows, and bench. The 6' standard works better for my home setup spatially and allows me to lift below 45lbs for warmup sets. I have a 7' standard…

Is squatting 400lbs considered a lot?
I'm curious as to opinions on what's considered a lot when it comes to lifting, particularly squatting. I'm 35y/o, 5'10, ~160lb and have been lifting off and on for 2-3 years (modified All-Pros program, home gym) , achieving consistency (6 days/week) for just over 6 months. Outside that I have no lifting background. I…

Body Fat %? Pics Included
Wondering what my body fat % is. 35yo, 5'10" 152.6lbs as of 8/8/21, was ~170lbs 5/28/21. ~1000 cal deficit/day & 150-180g protein/day. Running modified All-Pros broken into 6 days/week, 3 lifts/day vs 3 days/week, 6/lifts/day, skipping 8 rep week, and ahead of schedule (over 10% weight increase after 12 rep week). Goal is…

Leg Extension Adapter - Olympic to Standard
I'm looking for an adapter to allow an Olympic leg extension to fit standard plates. I imagine it would be a 2" circular hole with 2 1" bars on opposite sides and some type of locking system to prevent rotation. Has anyone came across something like this?

Grip Strengthener - Need Advice
My grip during deadlifts is failing around 7-8 RPE (i.e. 2-3 reps left in the tank). My dominant hand is good, but non-dominant fails in my pinky and ring fingers. Thumb-under grip mildly helps, and resting and switching mid-set to mixed grip allows set completion. I'd like to strengthen my grip to allow traditional grip…

The Truth About Eating Before You Workout
I work out in the mornings (lifting followed by cardio) and have read varying opinions on the benefits/detriments to eating (specifically carbs) before working out. I've read doing so can redirect some bodily functions to digestion-which may be detrimental-to eating carbs 30-60 minutes before will allow your body to use…

Diary Settings for Minimum Macros & Workout Calories
When I add workouts my food diary increases my calories needed (which is fine), but it also increases my daily macros accordingly. I'd like my daily macros to remain set, rather than increasing with my workout calories. Is this possible?

Squat Form Question
So I researched to ensure proper form and came across an article stating squats should be "*kitten* to the grass," i.e. thighs below parallel to the ground. With my 25% and 50% max weight squats I can accomplish this, however at 100% I can only get to parallel. Question; is this a form cheat? If so should I lower my 100%…

Cardio While Cutting Causes LBM Loss?
I've read doing cardio while cutting can increase LBM loss (most speculate it's due to your body dipping beyond glycogen storage). My reason for cardio would not be to increase my deficit, but rather to allow more intake to be able to hit my macros by eating back exercise calories. If I'm eating back cardio calories and…

7.5 lb Weight Gain - Creatine Spike?
I've been progressively losing weight for a couple months now. I understand its not linear; I've had peaks and valleys with a downward trend. I should be near or below 160 by July 1. I started taking creatine consistently two weeks ago, typically ~15-20 grams per day (loading phase [though I know it's not technically…

How to Suggest MFP to Relatives
I have a relative that's obese and has weight-related medical complications. She lives alone and is a vegan that doesn't eat a proper vegan diet. She's said she wants to lose weight. I think the support of MFP would be a game changer for her. Problem is I don't want her to sluff it off at first glance; it can be…

Strength Training Spacing - To Spread 3 Training Days into 5?
I recently began a progressive dumbbell program that is as follows; Day 1 (Sunday or Monday)- Squats, Bench, Pullover, Pendlay Day 2 (Tuesday or Wednesday) - Squats, Overhand Press, Curls, Deadlift Day 3 (Friday) - Squats, Bench, Pullover, Pendlay, Overhand Press, Curls, Deadlift Question; What are the potential advantages…

Starting a Lifting Program while Cutting - Need Your Thoughts
I'm 5'10", down to 165lbs (17-20% bf) from 185. Want to get to 155 before bulking. I average 1-2 hours cardio per day, with a daily caloric deficit around 1,000 calories. Once I hit GW, I plan to bulk to ~170, then cut. I'm planning on beginning strong lifts 5x5, as I haven't lifted in 5+ years and thus consider myself…

Thoughts on Dumbbell Program
I'm going to begin weightlifting, maintaining a defecit while I get my routine down before bulking. I haven't lifted in years. I have dumbbells and a bench, and plan on lifting every other day to allow for recovery and progressively adding weight. Essentially, I attempted to design a modified Strong Lifts program to focus…

Passing Goal and Shooting for 10% BF - Looking for Others with Experience
My initial goal was to lose enough weight to fall within a healthy BMI; I'm 5'10" and was once near 205lbs. Beginning March I started ~180lb with a goal of 175-170; I thought once I reached my goal I'd be satisfied. I'm now 165-170 but would like to continue the journey; I'm now aiming for 155lb to be at 10% body fat, at…

Muscle Strength vs Calories Burned - Does it matter?
I've been mulling this over and reached the conclusion I simply don't know the answer. So here it goes; Does a stronger muscle result in lesser caloric burn when used? In other words Does a muscle's efficiency effect caloric burn? Two examples; Weight Lifting; Lifter A is a well-conditioned weight lifter. He reps…
