Birthday coming up... cake?
My birthday is coming up. What are some cakes or cake-like foods (any kind of a dessert, really) that 1) I can BUY, instead of having to make/bake myself, and 2) are not insanely high in calories? I'm a huge advocate of "everything in moderation" most of the time, and I totally get the "this is a lifestyle change, learn to…

When nutritional info doesn't add up
Take raw broccoli, for instance. For 85g, it contains 4g carbs/ 0g fat/ 3g protein, and 25 calories. But 1g carb = 4 calories = 1g protein, which means 85g raw broccoli should contain 7 x 4 = 28 calories? Okay, so maybe they're rounding down... but look at THIS! Trader Joe's low calorie light bread 11g carb/ 3g protein/ 0g…

Look at this amazing lady...
There are many inspiring people out in the world. This is one of them! http://vishstudio.deviantart.com/art/Maria-333665632 My tummy right now kind of looks like hers in the "before" pic, I think? I hope my abs will look that good in three years

NSVs and shrinking jeans
Shrinking jeans: I bought these 28" jeans a few months ago. They were super snug on me back then; I bought them anyway. A few weeks ago, I tried them on, and they fit perfect! They were, however, too long because I'm a shortie. Before I took them for alterations, I thought I'd wash them first to see if they'd shrink. And…

Question for cheese experts
Not sure if this goes better in the Recipes forum... Today I was making a stir fry and put shredded pepper jack cheese in it. The cheese melted into shapeshifting solid chunks. I remember mozzarella (both fresh and low-moisture varieties) doing the same thing from past experience. But the other day, I made the same dish…

Squats and back discomfort
Today, while doing squats, I felt this discomfort in my lower back. I'm suspecting a form issue here. Unfortunately I don't have any recordings of me squatting, but any common mistakes that cause this problem? It's the same sensation I felt when over-arching while doing curls (which I don't do anymore). I don't think I was…

30 day shred question
Just ordered the DVD. I'm so pumped for it! However... I realized I don't have any small weights. I have big ones. Can the workouts be performed using small (2.5lbs and/or 5lbs) weight PLATES instead? The round hole-y disks that you stick on olympic bars? Do the workouts require a lot of open space? I can do jumping jacks…

Question for weight lifting ladies
For lean weight lifting ladies: Is it possible to build up your glutes so that when you sit down on a hard surface, your butt doesn't hurt anymore? I guess dudes can answer this question too, but never seen that "now that I'm skinny, it hurts to sit on a hard surface" comment except from other women. My butt was wimpy to…

Warm/hot quick healthy meals?
Greek yogurt with fruits/ nuts/ granola has been my go-to for the longest time! But now that the weather is getting cold where I live, I find myself wanting warmer foods. What are some quick protein-y meals that won't give me goose bumps on a chilly morning? Warm is nice, but I'll be okay with "not cold" too. Please don't…

Do men generally care about stretch marks?
I thought men usually didn't even notice those, until a few days ago, when my dad asked me, "how's your weight loss going?" ... followed by "good, what about the stretch marks on your calves? I'm a little concerned because you had a lot of those. Have they faded a bit?" HE cares more about my stretch marks than I…

Does this happen to anyone else?
I wake up much earlier (say, by 1-3 hours) than my usual time. I pee and weigh myself, and I weigh a bit more than I normally would. Then I drink a cup of water and go back to sleep. I wake up later, pee and weigh myself again. My weight is back to what it normally is. This happens to me EVERY time I wake up earlier. Has…

HRM for swimmers
I am happy with my current HRM for the most part, but when I go swimming, it loses signal all the time. Any HRMs out there that you can rely on in water, whether it's chlorinated or salty?

The effects of aging
I just turned 30 recently, so maybe I'm a bit too young to think about this, but... I've seen grandmas and grandpas who can put a lot of young people to shame in terms of fitness. I admire them, and hope to be like them when I'm in my 70's. But I also see old people who walk very slowly with canes, can't climb stairs, etc.…

NSV - a true change.
I've been sick since Tuesday. It's kept me out of the gym for three days (counting today), and I cannot wait to get back. You would NEVER, ever hear the old me saying that. I have always been a sedentary person, even as a child. More importantly, I used to embrace excuses. Early in 8th grade, I had an isolated case of…

Gimmicks/ fads that don't work
We all know gimmicky fad diets don't work. But do you ever see gimmicky fad tips 'n' tricks type of stuff that AREN'T related to weight loss? For example, I'm an artist, and I know there's no shortcut to improving your art. It's a lot like weight loss. Yet I see people offering to teach less experienced artists, talking…

Exercise NSV...
This is going to sound silly to those of you who can crank out like 20+ pullups in a row, but it's huge for me... I DID IT. I did 6 unassisted pullups in a row! I was so out of shape when I started back in April. My grip and my biceps were my weakest points. I've been doing lots of high row/ lat pulldowns at near-body…

Retiring running shoes
Are retired running shoes safe to use for everyday walking? Or should I just throw them out? It seems like such a waste to throw them out, since old running shoes are much kinder to my feet than most new (non-athletic) shoes are.

Is it just me?
Brushing one's teeth is a common advice for craving suppression, as food is not very tasty when consumed right after the brushing. But there is one major exception: CHOCOLATE. Is it just me, or does regular chocolate simply taste like mint chocolate if you eat it after brushing your teeth...? I enjoy mint chocolate but not…

I finally realized...
I am roughly 15 pounds away from my goal weight. Very recently, I had been plateauing for about three weeks. It didn't make me want to quit, but it did make me wonder... "when am I EVER going to get this fat off?" After three weeks of frustration, it hit me. I've got 8, almost 9 months till the bikini season. That gives me…

Pulldown question
If I can do 10 reps of pulldown at a weight equal to my own body weight, does that mean I can do 10 pullups? Body weight pulldown = body weight pullup in terms of strength required?

Helpful website for body fat % guesstimation
For those of you who haven't had an official body comp done (like me!), here's a potentially helpful website I came across. http://fatloss.askthetrainer.com/ Scroll down and you'll see different body types to select. I'm apparently somewhere between 35% and 30%... which fits my previous guess of 33%. I've got a lot of work…

They didn't recognize me. :)
My mom is friends with the husband-wife owners of a local butcher's shop. They'd seen me a few times before I lost weight. A few weeks ago, they told my mom about how they saw a frequent customer (a young female) who lost 30 pounds, and she looked so different. My mom, knowing that I had lost a lot more than that, wanted…

Super annoyed + Q about New Rules of Lifting for Women
Back when I was heavier, it was so much easier to burn 800 calories a day. I love to eat, and some of my favorite foods are rather calorie-dense, so the exercise calories helped a lot. But now that I'm 132lbs (I'm short so I still need to lose more)... It's such a struggle to burn just 500! Judging by my heart rate, I'm…

Signs that you need to eat more
During the last 3-4 days, I'd get weak and shaky towards the end of my cardio sessions. I'm interpreting it as a sign that I need to up my calories, so that's what I'm going to try for the next couple of weeks. Going from 1250 net to 1350 net. For those of you who have also upped calories during your journey, what were…

Chest muscle question
Okay. I have a problem. I have very little fat on my upper torso. In my upper chest area just above the boobs, you can see hints of the ribs!!!!! Yet the rest of my body has plenty of fat to lose. My lower belly, in particular, is bulging out. How can I fix this? I don't want no ribs pokin' out, and I don't want all this…

Leg press machine hurts my knee
First of all, I'm not in serious pain or anything. Just worried because it might get worse over time if I keep doing leg presses. Will squats and lunges be easier on my knees? I haven't been doing those because my form might be off... But if those are my only pain-free options to work on my glutes (which I really need!), I…

51lbs down. Pics!
I am 5' 1.5", and have lost over 50lbs so far. Here's a pic at my highest (sorry about the weird crop). Pounds lost: 0 A pic I posted a while ago. Pounds lost: 20 And here's the one I took just now, wearing a size S dress! Pounds lost: 51 I still need to lose like 25lbs of fat, and build more muscle. I know not when I'll…

Fruits for Greek Yogurt?
Raspberries + blackberries + honey + nonfat plain Greek Yogurt is my go-to post-workout snack. But summer is over, and the berries around here aren't nearly as good anymore! What other kinds of fruits do you put in your Greek Yogurt?

Age guessing - what do you look for?
Exhibit A. My family is from Korea. A certain Caucasian friend of mine looked like she's in early 30s to my family, as well as other Koreans who saw her when she was visiting. This was back when she and I were both 25-ish. People who hadn't known her were surprised to learn that she was my age because they thought she…

When you're sick, what can you do to...
...minimize muscle loss? :( I had the flu last week and recovered pretty quickly (2.5 days compared to 10 days of my past!). Then I caught another one this week!!! I think I might be losing some muscle mass. I don't think it's good for me to do serious exercises right now... Fever and all that. Is there anything I can do…
