Retiring running shoes

Are retired running shoes safe to use for everyday walking? Or should I just throw them out?
It seems like such a waste to throw them out, since old running shoes are much kinder to my feet than most new (non-athletic) shoes are.

They are fine for walking! I wear out the outer edge and eventually they even get not so great to walk in, but by that time they will be very beat up!0
