GAH. Guess I underestimated those for 3 years...

My husband asked me to get bagels yesterday, so I got a few. We have cream cheese and smoked salmon, I haven't been very hungry lately, so this morning I figured I'd have a bagel instead of my English muffin.

It's plain bulk bagels from a local store. Usually I'd just log one bagel from some random chain (260 calories), but I figured I'd weigh it and find a recipe with weight... It came out to 360 calories. Double checked with two different entries too....

YIKES. It didn't look like a huge bagel or anything. But basically I've probably underestimated my bulk bagel calories by 25% for a year. Good thing I don't eat many of them, but still...

I guess that's why you got to weigh your food... Let's say it was my treat for the day (and I could have got my English muffin AND a donut for those calories! Dumb Fran).

I like those occasionally but I like English muffins better.

You made me feel a bit better. It's good to see other long timers catching this stuff. I recently rebuilt mashed potatoes in the recipe builder and found I was way off too. Something like 200 vs 120 calories.

Well it only shows that in the big scheme of things, a 100 calorie error a couple times a month (if that, I have bagels maybe 4x a year, lol) is not a huge deal, lol.

Still pretty disheartening and I'll definitely pass on the bagels from now on. There are yummier things to spend my calories on (although I'd like to try French Toast bagels still but I guess those would be 600 calories or something).

I weigh my bagel and scoop out the insides. I can't stand Bagel Thins, they are not the same as real bagels.

Yeah. I live in NYC. Our fresh bagels are no where close to the 260 calorie store/brand bagels. I usually assume 350-400. Sometimes even more.

There's a few USDA entries for bagels (by weight). I had a craving last week for a real, fresh bagel and full-fat veggie cream cheese. I was pretty unsurprised to find out that my "reasonable" portion was about a quarter of a bagel. But it was gooooood.

I love bagels but man, I can really only eat them a couple times per year now. They do absolutely nothing to fill me up, unless there's bacon, egg and cheese on them.

The only usda plain bagel entry says '1 bagel'. I did laugh at that.

I used Starbucks' entry, which is pretty much 360 calories for my bagel. I'm actually still full and I had it almost 4 hours ago, so it's a win for me at this point.

It's the week after my period, I have a small appetite. I wouldn't have eaten it any other time, lol.

Interesting, I just went by the packaging so I will have been under estimating them as well....for 4 years!. ..doh! it's a good job I don't eat them often.

    Thanks for posting.

Well the packaged one are usually only 10-20 calories off. This was a bulk bagel.

The best ones that are small enough to eat on a diet are Lenders from the frozen section I think - they are small enough and the onion ones still have plenty of taste. I try to stay away from pure carb though since it doesn't fill me up enough to not feel hungry an hour later.

I was doing the same thing with my greek yogurt. Completely mixed up the calorie values for 1 serving vs 100g, so have been having an extra 80 calories every time (I eat this about 4x a week). The extra calories don't bother me as much as the fact I've been making a silly mistake!
