There is no "vs". CICO is an equation and working out is a method to achieve that as well as to improve health.15

You can lose weight without exercising controlling calories, but you are not guaranteed to lose weight through exercise alone. Ideally--for overall health and fitness--you can integrate both. Getting a good caloric burn through cardio and muscle building helps, but for average people who aren't full time athletes it won't do it all.2

The CO part of the equation is working out.
Calories in (CI) is what you eat.
Calories out (CO) is what you burn off through the fuel your body needs to live, breathing, sitting upright, standing, walking, jogging, going to the gym, cycling, skiing, canoeing, throwing the ball around with your kids at the park, etc. etc. etc.

As other have said, there is no vs here. Working out affects the CO part of CICO.

Calories in V Calories out. If your calories in exceed your calories out then you will gain weight. If your calories out exceed your calories in then you will lose weight. If your calories in are equal to your calories out, then you will maintain weight. Whichever way, eating style or exercise regime you decide to choose.3

I'm not sure I understand the comment ... and I'm not sure what it has to do with this topic, but ...
If you drink a black coffee or tall glass of cold water at 3 pm, you won't add any calories to the CI portion of the CI<CO equation.

This was the first thought that popped into my head as I read the title (before opening the thread), thank you!0 -
Not if you were still in a calorie deficit.0

What if I drank something sweet but was in a calorie deficit will it affect me losing
weight.
As long as CI is less than CO, you'll lose weight. But you've got to be brutally honest about how much you're consuming and how much you're burning.
BTW - quite often a tall glass of cold water can energise a person in the middle of the afternoon ... no sugar involved. Try it!

If it has calories, it will shrink your deficit. Example: Your deficit is 500 after you've eaten your calorie allotment and worked out or whatever, for today. You drink a 60 calorie light drink. Your deficit is now 440 for today. ANYTHING you ingest at all that has calories must be accounted for. That includes sweet drinks IF they have calories (coke zero has zero, so that's a sweet drink that you don't have to worry about). Simply log everything you put into your mouth and make sure you're meeting your allotment and no more and you'll lose. It's very simple.0 -

As long as your at a deficit , you will still lose weight.
Makes no difference as far as weight loss is concerned . eat at a deficit and you'll lose weight. The foods and drinks you pick are up to you0 -

CICO is an energy equation, not a diet protocol...1

What is more important is that CO exceed CI to lose weight.0 -
Best to look at these two as a symbiotic relationship rather than an either or.0

CO doesn't have to be working out. It can be just living. Someone might have an active job and never do extra exercise to have a decent CO
Or
They could not be able to exercise.
CO is what is burned regardless of how it's done.0 -

A calorie deficit is for weight loss. So as long as CI<CO you will lose weight regardless of how you get the CO.
Working out is for health and fitness and if you don't want to exercise don't.0 -
What's more important to get money? Spending less money than you earn, or earning money?0
