Thank you for starting this thread.
My name is Melanie, I’m 29. I started on MFP in December 2016 and I have lost a total of 120 lbs. My highest weight was 471 and I was devastated and disgusted when I stepped on the scale at the doctor and saw that number. I’m down to 350 lbs now and I’ve got a long way to go. The journey has been so great so far! I’ve been overweight since I was 2 years old and I can’t remember a day when I did not think about my weight. Now I think about it, but I feel HOPEFUL for the first time in my entire life. I know that I will reach my goal. It isn’t going to happen overnight, but I’m going to get there and I’m going to enjoy the journey and learning knew things about myself. I started going to the gym a couple of weeks ago (3 weeks ago now, I guess) and I am in love with it! I look forward to hearing everyone’s struggles and supporting one another through this. I’ll send friend requests for those of you who I’m not yet friends with. Having people in my corner has been one of the biggest factors I contribute to making this work this time.24 -
Hey everyone! I'm so glad you made this thread. It can be really discouraging to see people struggling to lose 25 or even 50 lbs when I need to lose 8 times that!
I'm going to be 31 at the end of February, I'm 5'8", and I've let myself get up to at least 397 lbs. It was probably more, but I was afraid to weigh for the first week back on the wagon because I didn't want to feel overwhelmed and quit before I even started. I'm 6 weeks in now though and weighed in at 375 today, so I'm on the right track!
I want to lose weight for a lot of reasons, but the biggest motivation for me right now is to have a kid. I'm worried that it will be too hard on my body to carry a baby at this size.... if I even could get pregnant at all! I also want to live longer than my dad who we lost a year and a half ago at the ripe old age of 56.... I've also been shocked at how much money I've saved by taking my lunch to work everyday and buying less groceries in general!
I've worked out a reward system for myself where I can buy something for our future baby worth the amount of weight I've lost in lbs every 10 lbs, so I could spend $10 at 10 lbs, $20 at 20 lbs, etc.
Anyway! I would love to have more friends on this journey who are in the same boat! Feel free to friend me!

Wow, so many new people, I am happy this is a building safe place for all of us. I hope I get to everyone.
For my update I am finally to my next milestone that I now have lost 81 pounds. I have lost 4 pounds this year so far. I am down to 312. I want 299 so bad, for so many reasons......that is the lowest I remember weighing when I did WW several years ago before I had my daughter. So keeping my fingers crossed I get there by March.
Welcome to all the newbies, I started this thread for everyone because it does in fact get discouraging when everyone around you only needs to loose 30 pounds or less.
@Savage_Feast welcome to the thread. How are you liking Keto so far?
@sarahchmielarz I am glad you decided to join us. We all have the end goal in mind. 3 pounds is freaking awesome. Keep it up you got this.
@crazykatlady820 My goal is to finish the year as healthy as possible. Keep losing pant sizes and get rid of my muffin top.
@NicoleVT83 Welcome to our thread. You are doing amazing. Please keep up the good work and remember you can always come here and vent. I find I lose more when I log everything. At the beginning I was absolutely floored when I logged everything I saw how much crap I was eating.
@timwrx98 First let me say welcome and AMAZING work with your loss. I only just started adding more exercise to my regiment and I have thought about getting a Fitbit to see what I am actually doing. I agree fully this is a new way of life.
@Sanshain17 Welcome Judy and congrats on your 10 pound loss. Keep everything up. I agree Keto is hard. I think I have learned that cutting carbs is always good but as of now I only count calories.
@Sheenabug4699 Welcome Sheena, I am so sorry for your loss. Hopefully this journey will allow you to eventually stop some of the meds. We are all here for you.
@pugsrmypatronus Welcome Liz, your loss is so awesome, keep it up. I also feel that I stress about all of this too. Please try and relax and use all of us for an outlet.
@Mellykay88 Welcome Melanie, Don't you love MFP? I have to say you are such an inspiration. Keep up what you are doing because you are doing awesome. Congrats on starting to hit the gym. Please keep us posted with your success.
@rabidhamster87 Welcome! I agree with how discouraging it can be mixing with people who don't quite understand what we are all going through. I am sorry to hear about the loss of your father. We are all here for you. What an awesome goal system, can't wait to hear more.
Lastly I was thinking of possibly having a question of the week, what are everyone's thoughts on that?
Keep rocking what you are all doing!!!!

Yeah I’m into more talking and opinions and feedback. Always looking for new food and recipes ideas, as well as people sharing what is working for them. Weekly results good or bad.3
-
I think a question of the week would be a great way to keep everyone involved and talking to each other!
And congratulations on the 81 lbs lost!! That is absolutely nothing to sneeze at. You're knocking it out of the park!2 -
Question of the week.....
Are you following a specific diet (Keto, Atkins) and if so why? Also, do you find something specific seems to be helping you knock it out of tye park?1 -

I’m not. Different strokes for different folks, but I find CICO (Calories in/Calories out) to be the most sustainable approach for me. I think I can stick to this long term, better than I would if I banned certain foods. I think, for me, the thing that has been different this time, vs all of the other times I’ve tried and quit, is that this time I got on here and actually learned HOW to lose weight. Every other time I thought I had to starve myself to get results... which is absolutely not true. So educating myself on healthy weight loss has been life changing.

I'm the same as Melanie. (My name is Rissa btw! Just realized I didn't include it in my intro post!)
CICO works best for me too! I know a lot of people swear by keto and it's supposed to be good for PCOS (which I have,) but I tried it last year and actually gained 10 lbs! It was just a lot harder for me than regular old CICO; CICO makes the most sense to me because I can see the numbers. I know that every pound lost is a 3500 calorie deficit, so I know that if I eat 1000 calories below what I spend in a day I should lose 2 lbs a week! Plus, then I don't feel deprived! If I want to have some candy, I can. I just have to budget for it!
I'm also kind of doing a modified intermittent fasting too. It just happened naturally because I don't like breakfast and I'm not hungry until closer to lunch time at 10:15 am or so, so I figured why force myself to eat if I don't want to? And I don't eat past 8 pm most nights because I don't want to get heartburn and I'm usually hungry as soon as I get home because I ate lunch so early. So, I end up going at least 14 hours without eating pretty much every day.
As far as specific things helping me knock it out of the park... Honestly, I've been blessed/lucky enough to remove several different negative influences from my life recently (a lot of debt and I stopped talking to a really toxic person) and it's just made everything much easier. I think those stressors were literally killing me!3 -
Nice to meet you Rissa @rabidhamster87!1
-
For me I have defiantly really been cognoscente of my carbs. I think like Rissa removing negative influences in my life has been huge. In August I officially split up from my husband of 13 years. When it became just my daughter and I that was such a weight lifted off of my shoulders. Plus if we wanted to have a bowl of strawberries for dinner we did and that was that. It shows you how far she and I have come in 6 months. Last night I made stir fry for my dinner and lunch today and when I sat down to eat she was wanting it too even though she had already eaten with her grandparents.
Also to be honest when my ex and I were having our last conversation about what we were doing with our marriage he brought up the fact that my weight was a big issue for him, so now every major milestone I hit is nothing but a even bigger middle finger to him. But now more so it is all for me. So I would have to say that has pushed me most to knock it out of the park.3 -
I am chad and I'm 35 years old. I started at 407 lbs this time. I was under 300 a few years ago and then life happened and let things get out of control. Ended up being a type 2 diabetic and realizing a change was needed. I have lost close to 30 lbs since the middle of November. Since becoming diabetic I went from needing 4 shots 2 times a day to no shots and instead 11 pills a day and now I am down to only taking 4 pills a day and my a1c is doing fantastic and sitting at numbers mostly looked at as "non diabetic" 5.4-5.7 for anyone interested in knowing.
I lost the weight several years ago before I got married and was running 5ks and doing c25k and counting calories. I since got divorced and had lots of life happenings along the way and stopped doing all of it. I would try and fail miserably. I am sticking to it so far this time with the help of nutrisystem. I am not sure how long I am going to be on nutrisystem as the cost is the biggest issue I have with it but so far it has really helped me. I slip up and even allow myself to "enjoy life" on occasion. Like yesterday was just a mess for me all together. I had nachos for lunch and chinese takeout for dinner. Don't regret it one bit. If i don't allow myself meals or days like that I wont be successful. I just get back on track the next meal/day and continue my path.9 -
MY PEOPLE! I'm Candy. 23. I'm 378 today. I was 350 in 2014, lost to 300 in 2015 and then gained 80 over the course of 3 year. Sheeesh. I'm always looking for friends above 300 lbs.7

Thanks for coming up with the question Cassie! I'm not doing anything special like keto as I've done that so many times and the anxiety of doing low-carb is more than it's worth. I also have PCOS but I figure losing the weight in a healthy and not extreme way is better than another crash diet. I do try and focus on eating a lot of vegetables and plant based food as I use to not eat meat so I really enjoy that but I'm just keeping an eye on it more than anything. I'm still in the early part of this journey but I guess what I've found to help me be successful is using a food scale to measure so I can get a sense of portion sizes and reminding myself why this is important. I have to get a brain MRI scan done soon and I know I can't control what's happened in the past but I really want to work hard to make sure I'm putting my best foot forward!
As a few folks have mentioned I think removing negative influences is so critical as I'm guessing a lot of us may use food as a way to deal with those situations. I honestly think I may be the most negative thing in my life so I'm trying to focus on a little more self love and acceptance!3 -
I'm not following any special diet. I have in the past, but CICO is the only sustainable way of eating for me.
I also had to remove some negative influences from my life. For me it was alcohol and I started spending less time on Facebook (it stressed me out for so many reasons).6 -
Ooh.. removing stress and negatively were huge for me as well! I actually switched jobs in October 2016 (right before I started losing weight). My previous job was so stressful that I cried before going to work sometimes. I couldn’t have been successful with this if I’d stayed there.4

Hi everyone my name is Joe and I once weighed 340 pounds. I turned around one day and just said I was done with this. Im already a disabled Veteran with lower back and knee issues but at 340 getting up from a seated position was becoming a problem. I found myself rolling off things and then kneeling to stand up as getting up normally was simply out of the question anymore. So I looked at what I was eating and how much of it I was eating. I started to make leaner choices and lower my portion sizes. I began walking more and simply going out window shopping or to the movie theater and parking far away from the stores so I had to walk further than normally. Those little things started to make a difference and gave me the strength the start really working out. I would turn around and order Jym products that I would take while working out. Myself and my ex got a gym membership and began going and committing an hour at the gym as often as we could. I would later move and continue to work out. Though I stopped going to the gym completely. Instead I began martial arts again. So now I was doing martial arts, walking as often as possible, and doing push ups and sit ups and a variety of other core exercise. Over the course of 1 year I would go from 340 pounds to 164 pounds! Im not joking. I couldnt believe it when I stepped on the scale one day and read 164lbs. I thought to myself "This must be broken, damn it!" but then I looked in the mirror and started to turn like I was a muscle show contestant and I saw my hard work and dedication paid off. All the clothing I had was 4XL and pants 44 waist if I remember. I was literally able to stand in one pant leg comfortably. That's how much weight was lost.
You can do it too I have faith, so should you!19 -
Hi there. I definitely know the feeling. I've got 150lbs I need to lose. I have several severe health issue that make it hard to lose but I want to so bad. I use to be a runner and then got sick. They have had me on and off steroids for years and it makes it so hard to lose. If any of you ladies want to add me feel free. My husband is a body builder and we just got married, seeing how I looked in pics made me feel like a cloud. I'd love to look good again for me and him.2

Hey there! Thanks for making this thread for all of us.
My name is Amy, I'm 25 & I started at 390 lbs
( possibly a bit more)- lost some weight last year (quite unhealthily)- to about 320.then gained back to 360ish, a few weeks ago I had a wake up call, something switched on inside of me and since then I've been working out every day, went from being very sedentary to jogging in place ( eventually I wanna jog outside lol) and or walking every day. I've also been paying close attention to what I am eating.I just want to be healthy and not have to worry about any complications.I'm learning a lot about myself, and nutrition. so far I'm down to 344.
I believe in all of you ❤ you are all strong!8 -
@CassieBinTC I think a question of the week is great!
I'm with most of the people here, I'm not really following a specific diet, just tracking what I'm eating to stay under my nutrition limits. I've also committed to a few other things that have helped in the past - making my own food for all meals, one cheat meal per week (allows for a stress free date night with the hubs), no drive through and no soda.
You all are also a part of this commitment - it's the first time I've reached out for support in this way. You guys are so inspiring and I'm really hoping that this will help me get through the moments where my willpower is faltering.4 -
Hi - so glad you created this!! I was on MFP a few years ago and lost about 60 pounds and then regained it plus +. Support from people in the same “weight class” is so important to me. I’m tired of having trouble getting up from a seated position - and off the floor OMG!!! The floor is the worst2
