Eating 30% below TDEE.

Right - I know the sweet spot is 20% below TDEE for weight loss, but I'm 220lbs, 22 years old and female, so BMI wise I'm morbidly obese. I've also injured my knee meaning a lot of exercise is restricted, and the exercise I can do such as walking slowly doesn't produce that much of a good calorie burn.
Therefore - am I okay to eat 30% below TDEE? I have read in the 'in place of a road map 2.0' thread that eating below 30% is okay for obese people, but that if a plateau occurs then I'd have to eat at full TDEE for a few days then try a 20% cut instead.
Am I right? & is 30% okay? That's all I wanna know.

My profile picture is me, a year ago. I've gained 6 stone in a year. I've had a few people ask me this, but for me it's more motivating to have a thin photo of myself than a fat one to look at everyday! Was always small until now.0 -

Thanksthat's sweet. Guess I just got lazy & greedy, that's the only explanation for it! And I always maintained my small figure with being at the gym at least an hour a day & ate pretty low calories, so think my metabolism screwed up and then when I started eating more & moving less, the weight just piled on like crazy. Thankfully I don't look 220lbs now. It's obvious I've gained weight but I don't look as big as I actually weigh... determined to get my old body back though!

There's no medical issue regarding my excessive weight gain, I've been to the GP for checks and blood tests etc but they found nothing. Like I said to the guy above, I maintained my small figure in the past through excessive exercise & eating reeeeally low calories, so when I started eating more & moving less because I got lazy, the weight just piled on really fast.
And thanks, I'll make a 30% cut and incorporate a weight training program into my lifestyle.0 -

I would say you could try it. It is good that you are aware of the plateau possibility and that metabolic damage is a bad thing. Also , as you lose weight and your TDEE falls you must be on guard to eat over your BMR, so your baseline nutritional needs are met.
The only modification I would say to the 'yes' answer, is that I think you should plan to do 30% only ever in short stretches, i.e. heading off plateaus before you hit them. So do 30% for 6 weeks max, or till you plateau , whichever comes first, and hope you don't plateau.
f metabolic damage /does/ occur, I think you would need to take at least 7-10days at TDEE maintenance, to recuperate , not just a few days. So you see ,if you 'crash', it could work out that in the medium to long term, a more cautious dieting strategy would have been better... something to be aware of.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ovtKufjyLbM

I am really skeptical that 30% can be your dieting strategy through your entire journey down from 220 to 135....I hope that you are similarly skeptical !
p.s. I hope you make your goal !0 -

Well to begin with a 30% cut leaves me at 1736 calories, & my BMR is 1783 so I'm only just under my BMR thankfully. But yeah I do agree that I wouldn't be able to sustain a 30% deficit for long before I plateau or do metabolic damage, and the sole reason for me eating more calories is to avoid screwing up my metabolism!0
