Its not just a problem for women's clothing. Its a problem for men as well:

In the era of internet shopping, this issue is even more important. If my waist measures 30 inches I should be able to order a size 30 swimsuit (or pair of pants, etc) online without it falling off. It should not matter if you are thin or obese. People should be confident that after measuring themselves the clothes they order online will actually fit.

If you have a 54 inch waist would you rather be told you are a size 50 by one brand, size 51 by another brand, etc or 54 by all brands? I am guessing most people would prefer the consistency of the answer based on an actual measurement (54 inches) instead of unpredictable vanity sizing.

Instead of making me feel better about myself, vanity sizing only pisses me off and makes me want to boycott the most egregious brands.

Yeah it sucks! I definitely do not buy clothes online because of this reason. I have to try on the clothes since the sizing varies... I think there should just be a standard guideline for clothing companies to follow.

I hate the fact Europeans know how to measure clothes and Americans don't.

I will never shop at Old Navy. Any brand that calls a 41 inch waist size 36 is just ridiculous.
