So, I have been working really hard at couting my calories, making better decisions on meals/snacks, and keeping up my exercise routine....until the past couple of weeks. Yes, the summer is busy for me since I have a family that likes to go camping and do all sorts of things and I try my hardest to still stay on track. However, I have been having the worst time with sweets. I have been craving them so bad lately and I don't know what to do to stop. We have some sweets at home and usually I can just walk by them and it doesn't bother me, but lately I just want to grab them and sit on the couch and vegetate!! That is not like me anymore!! And today, my boss brings in his leftover birthday cake.....just kick me while I am already down......argh!! :frown: I just don't know what to do anymore to curb these cravings. I eat very good for my meals, but man, I go home and all I want to do is snack on crap!!
Anyone have any good advice to get me over the sweet hump??

I've totally been there...and I'm also in one of those funks too. Seems like everyone's having a birthday this month! Normally I just try to keep my splurges within my calorie limit. The best thing you can do is just get it all out of the house! Or have your family members keep it out of sight. Then at least when office cake makes a surprise appearance, it can be a treat. Also, get more active now that it's nice out. Burn a few more calories during the day by simple going for a 30 min - 1 hour walk (during your lunch break?) Then you won't feel as guilty about splurging0

Sugar is such a drug.
I did really well staying away from sweets .... until Christmas time.. Now im back on the "juice".
The problem is getting it out of your system. Once you give in, just a little bit... your body then craves it.
Its like having to detox or go through withdrawl.
OH, and if you figure this out, let me know . im right there with ya!0 -
Buy this GUM - chew on it, and go for a walk. Do not sit down on the couch.
This has been an "afternoon-sweet-attack" life-saver for me:
Extra Dessert Delight Sugar Free Gum - 5 calories per stick
Mint Chocolate Chip
Strawberry Shortcake
Key Lime Pie
Rootbeer Float
Apple Pie
Orange Icecream Bar0 -
Bandie77, you are so right!! It is much like a drug and once I have a little, I want more!! Oh, how stressful!! I am glad that I am not the only one going through this problem with trying to stay away from the sweets. I just changed a few of my settings in MFP, so I am going to start a new and fresh exercise routine and I am definately going to go through my cupboards and have my husband hide all of the "goodies" that are around. Hopefully, he will know enough to hide them good cause I have a tendancy to "sniff" them out!! I would like to be your friend so we can kick this habit together!! If interested, sent me a request....:flowerforyou:0

Right there with you!!! Some people have "a" sweet tooth; I have a whole mouth full of sweet teeth!!!:ohwell:
The one thing I read and have actually practiced is to set my alarm for 15 minutes, drink a huge glass of water and keep myself busy and more often than not the craving passes. When it doesn't I allow myself one small piece or bite of whatever it is I am craving and that completely satisfies me. Good luck :happy:0 -
5pmsomewheren - I will definately try this gum....however, after reading those flavors, it makes me want ice cream....BAD!! hahahahahaha:laugh:0

I tried one of these (I think the mini chocolate chip one) when it first came out, I wasn't impressed with how short the flavor seemed to last but they didn't has as many back then. I think I'll give it a go!
awolf2011-what about having some of those 100 calorie packs on hand? I have some at work and home (both chocolate and salty) and they do a lot to help when I crave something like a chocolate bar that someone else is having or whatever.0 -
ugggg....my #1 downfall. I gave up refined sugar for several months last fall and I stopped craving it. After Christmas and lots of splurges I was hooked again. I'm better about having it in moderation now, but I still eat way too much of it. I love to bake, too, and make homemade ice cream so it's hard to give up my hobby as well. It truly is a drug and cutting it out completely has been the only thing that works for me, unfortunately.0

Soooo glad other people feel this way too! I was doing really good - but then I fell off the wagon, had sugar, and now I cannot pass up M&M's, chocolate kisses, brownies, oreos, etc. What happened to me! I used to be so strong and had will power, now I eat this junk before I even know that it is in my mouth0

If you are craving it go ahead and have some but try not to over do it. I love sweets and so I try really hard not to eat much of it during the week but on the weekends I make room for them by having a lighter meal so I can indulge myself sweets.0

perhaps this is what happens when you give up things entirely. you end up binging on the thing you forbid yourself to have.
what happened to just finding better sweets to have...like dark chocolate - something that is good for you and can satisfy your sweet tooth.
it doesn't have to be all or nothing. who made up that crazy rule? it's dumb. don't do it.0 -

Because that doesn't work for everyone. some people can have a bag of dark chocolate in the house and eat one piece a day. If I have it in the house, I will eat half the bag in a blink of an eye. I cannot have it in the house.
Just as some people can easily go to a party and have one drink, but alcoholics will over-indulge. Sugar is a drug also.0 -
100 cal packs are GREAT.... if you can eat just ONE pack.
My problem is if i allow myself to have something sweet in the house, its considered ONE SERVING!
So yes, that box of weight watcher raspberry cheesecake ice cream bars are ONE SERVING!

Strong high gi carb cravings like for sweets, chocolate, chips etc. are an indicator of insulin resistance and damage to the cells' receptors for blood glucose (caused by long time of eating high gi carbs although there are other causes, like hormone disruption/imbalance). Choosing a diet too low in good carbs (usually high protein/no carb diets) work for the first 4-7 days. After that (for people with this condition) it becomes a battle of will vs just about every hormone and organ in your body. Guess who inevitably wins? Hahaha.
If you suffer from this, incorporate some good quality slow burning low gi carbs for breakfast, and to a lesser extent at lunch. If you can provide a slow, steady blood glucose level, you will lose weight without setting yourself up for carb failure. I set my mfp nutrition goals to 40% carbs 30% protein. If interested, A coq10 enzyme and green coffee bean extract can help with stabilizing blood glucose and help restore cell receptors sensitivity to blood glucose. When the cells aren't receptive to taking in the blood glucose (energy) it stays in your blood and gets converted to body fat and you don't burn fat when you're already storing more of it. Meanwhile the cells didn't get the energy, so your body uses hormones to make you crave high gi carbs for a quick fix to the situation. You can reverse it. Best wishes. Xx0 -
I have an emergency stash of Trader Joes 100 calorie chocolate bars in my pantry. If it gets to the point where I am going to tear my husband a new one, I allow myself to have one of those and it usually will get the craving done and over with.0

This is my biggest downfall too....and many other women (and men) that I know. I have 4 kids who are skinny and love to eat sugary foods so what I try to do is pick foods that I don't think will trigger my wanting to eat the whole bag. I know that I can't buy M&M's, Oreo's or chocolate chip cookie dough in the house because every time I walk by it, I have to have some....What i have done this week to try to 'detox' myself is to build into my day a little something 'sweet'. I bought some of those no sugar added jello puddings and if you eat them a tiny bite at a time they last for a good while. I also like blue bunny nonfat yogurt w/ a tbs of chocolate syrup, again eaten a tiny bite at a time....
Another thing that worked for me was to have a 100 cal popcorn bags and sprinkle 1-2tsp of mini chocolate chips over it. Makes me have a sweet/salty snack at the same time.....
Trick is to keep yourself busy if you crave it but i am a firm believer that if you totally deny yourself something you are going to crave it more....which leads to a major binge....0 -
I have this problem too.
Sometimes it gets so bad that I don't want normal food, and I just crave sweet food for meals too. Right now I've come about a week straight off the sugar drug. I'm doing well at the moment
Here's what helps me:
healthy sweet alternatives like dried fruit (I love those cherry or orange flavored single serving raisins from Nakd!), health cereal bar like Keallogs fibre plus, weetabix, or Jordans, a banana, etc.
It helps to look for carbs that are not bad for you too Like whole grains. For instance, oatmeal has 300 calories per cup but white flour has 700. Make your muffins or bread with half oatmeal! (or if you're like me, don't make homemade bread at all LOL)
Just a few ideas. If you want more message me. I've made a LOT of healthy snacks over the last 6 years.0
