Plateaus freaking suck! :(

Just wanted to put that out there.

I am plateauing yet again, and for me it's been really rough.

I am motivated to try really hard to break out, but I'm not sure how.

What have you guys had success with in breaking through plateau?

I currently weigh between 136-139 and have been stuck here for a while. Still got a lot to lose!

Oh, and if you are plateauing as well, feel free to complain with me ;)

Fat 2 Fit Radio recommends eating way over your recommended calories for a few days. They say you'll probably gain a pound or two, but it will kick-start your metabolism and break through the plateau! And its fun!

Like long-term or short term? I usually (not planned) end up eating a TON about once a week, when I'm out and about with family or friends, but I've never upped my calories for more than one or two days.

How tall are you and what kinds of workouts are you doing?

I'm 5'1". I weight train about 1-2x a week, run 1-2x a week and do yoga 1-2x a week, and walk a lot. The yoga is new. I have only done it for about 2 weeks. I know it doesn't burn many calories, but it makes me feel a lot less pain due to the other workouts.

My 3 best tips for breaking a plateau:

    1. Change up what you're eating (if you eat the same things over & over)
    2. Change up your workouts (esp. if you do all cardio, all the time, add weights)
    3. Make sure you're getting enough water, whole grains, lean protein, healthy fats & fruits/veggies.

Listen to 'helloitsdan' he's going to give you some great advice about eating more calories. I was stuck at the same weight for about 3 weeks. Started eating more calories, and I started dropping in less than two weeks. Way more sustainable.

Yep, I am hovering between 139-135 myself. I am 5'6. I recently upped my cals from 1200 to 1500 and then went on honeymoon (thus changing my exercise and dietary routines). I have been back a week and went from 138 back to 135.5, same as before. I'm going to give things more time before tweaking them again. It's just a case of finding out where your "sweet spot" is and it does take time for your body to get with the "new" program. Whatever you do,don't give up!

So you burn about 2k-2200 daily through regular activity.
You should really try to have about 2-3 days rest in between the activity for recovery.

    BMR 1311
So try to stay above this.

Personally I would set MFP to 2000 for about a week.
Eat all cals and stick the macros hard.
High carbs on workout days and high fats on rest days.

After a week set MFP to 1700-1800 and eat the cals/macros daily.
Dont eat back cals from working out since they are added into this number.

This should break the plateau and help you keep a steady loss.
My numbers show about a pound a week at 1700-1800 daily.

Raise your calories a little either 50 or 100 more a day and see if that helps. Everytime I increase mine I lose weight so give it a try

Agree! Such great information can be shared here on MFP.

2,000 sounds ridiculously high! However, I'm going to listen to your advice because your profile is hilarious and you seem to know what you're doing. Lately I've been eating between 1,000-1,400 a day. I'm afriad it'll be hard to raise while eating healthy foods. I'm going to cook up a bunch of brown rice when I get home and eat lots of it on workout days, and start adding oils to things. That should add up fast.

If I could lose a pound a week on 1700, I might just die and go to heaven.

Anyway, what site do you use to get your numbers? I'm curious so that I can recalculate when I get to a lower weight again. :)

Thank you all for your advice :)

Well you sound like you're trying and plateauing. I've been in a plateau for the past few months, between 150-155 and I guess maybe I should just call it maintenance. Just haven't been eating as well and the past 4 weeks stopped exercising, was sick etc. However feeling better and hoping to kick start things again! Good luck with it! I feel like I know what to do, just need to actually do it and that's really the hardest thing sometimes!
  • I lost 50 lbs about 3 years ago and I found my best attack was to change up my diet /exercise every 10 to 15 lbs. It also kept me from getting bored and the dreaded plateaus. Our bodies become accustomed to diet/exercise after a while, so I switched it up to keep my body losing weight.
