I was so proud of myself for losing 15 pounds for a vacation to California. (I am 44, 5'5" and 143 lbs, my goal weight is 135). But my face looks older and more wrinkled in the vacation photos even though I fit into size 8 jeans and feel excited about that accomplishment. But now I don't know whether to continue to lose to get to my goal weight of 135. I hate that I have to choose between looking worse in my face or my body. Anyone have a similar experience or have any helpful advice?

how did you lose the weight? i noticed that people who do VLCD end up looking way more ragged and aged after the process, hair skin and nails, which is reason #134 i could never do a VLCD.

another thing to keep in mind is that, um you're 44.. wrinkles are to be expected depending on your genes
  • You're probably right, I was losing kind of quickly because of the upcoming trip so I probably need to slow it down.

Maybe try wearing moisturizer every day..plus dry skin brushing, and of course, make sure to drink lots of water
I found that bio oil is helping reduce wrinkles on my face and helping my neck look less aged. I'm 48 and have lost 69 ponds in 7 months. Still a ling way to go and know I'll have hanging skin...but I'd rather have that than the adverse effects of obesity...

I've experienced the same thing; I'm 56 years old. I have been doing this the right way, but when you lose fat in your face, the wrinkles are more pronounced. It is very frustrating, but I have 10 more pounds to lose. I've started weight lifting for toning. If I can lose the belly fat, I'll be content regardless of the number on the scale. As far as the wrinkles go, I'll just have to live with them. :(

Just make sure to lose weight in a healthy way, not in a "quick" way .. also, very low calorie diets don't usually work for long term weight loss. I could be wrong though.
  • They say a little fat in your face helps keep the wrinkles away, because it somewhat "plumps" the skin. Once some of that fat is gone, wrinkles may begin to show more :( Unfortunate huh? Being a little overweight has its advantages! Who would have guessed!? haha

    Sunshine--
I'm your age and though currently considerably heavier than you (on top of being shorter), I can sympathize with your thoughts. Five years ago I was well on my way to losing the weight I need to get rid of and noticed that though I was down 40+ pounds and leaner and stronger due to good exercise, my skin looked older. While it bothered me, my weight loss stopped (and eventually reversed) due to other reasons and stressors. I don't recall if I felt like my skin started to recover, but I definitely understand what you're describing. My best suggestions:

    1. Stay well hydrated. I have been known to joke with folks who persistently claim that I don't look my age that the fat plumps up the wrinkles. A healthy amount of water helps it too.
    2. Don't cut the fat in your daily calories too extremely... keep a good balance. Those lipids help keep your skin pliable and cholesterol is required in the building of all new cell membranes.
    3. Use a good quality light moisturizer daily.
    4. If you take supplements, be sure the day's total doses are not massively overdone. Too much of some vitamins, like vitamin A and I believe at least one B vitamin will be hard on your skin. On the other hand a diet sufficient in vitamins A and E can support healthy skin.

Good health and energy levels and a smile on your face that comes from feeling good will shine brighter than small flaws. In 20 years you'll have wrinkles anyway, but creating and maintaining better health now means you'll have a better quality of life when that day comes. And I'll bet your 20-years-in-the-future wrinkles will be less pronounced on a better cared for you too.

    Seize the day!
  • Thank you for your helpful and encouraging posts! I know that as I age I will continue to get wrinkles but if I stay healthy and fit then i will be happier in the long run, so I will keep up the weight loss and make sure I get enough water, oils and moisturizer. Thank you for being a community that I can talk to, husband is supportive but doesn't understand the wrinkle scare!
