Rewarding Action Vs Sucess?

I'm not sure which would be more motivating and get better results...rewarding action or rewarding success?

I had the idea of giving myself 1p for every extra minute of exercise I do (ie not walking or cleaning). It doesn't sound like much but it should add up. Then when I reach my goal weight / happy with my shape, I'll book myself into a professional photo-shoot as a treat. Or I could do it the other way and give myself £20 for every pound I lose.

Which do you think is better?

  • Having done some maths, maybe a little more than 1p per minute.... :s

I prefer rewarding action. The scales are so fickle! I can't always control the scales but I can control whether I exercise, whether I'm under my cals etc.
  • the 1p each exercise is a brilliant idea! if only i could afford to do that. i am literally broke :(

you can watch your pennies build up and get more excited each time the jar gets fuller, or the bank, whichever way you want to save it.

you will do brilliant and the photo shoot will just liften your spirit :)
  • Ok, I've decided to go with 5p per min of extra exercise. I'm already excited. :)
In theory, in three/four months I should have reached my goal weight and have a decently full pot of pennies. :)

I am doing the c25k, am at week 3.
If I complete the whole program I am going to buy myself a DSLR camera.
Always wanted one so it works great for motivation.

I think the idea of rewarding action is a great one. Mostly because it is something you can actively DO.

Success (depending on how you measure it!) is only going to come after a series of actions. Enjoy your pennies!

give yourself a quid per every 10 minutes of extra workout (besides the ones you're supposed to do) and tell your family (kids if you got them) that you'll buy them something nice if you don't do allotted workout each week.

Do both, reward action consistently and then give yourself a bonus for successfully reaching goals. That way you are both rewarding your everday efforts, but also ensuring that you are continuing to push yourself to achieve more. Goals don't need to be scale-based, they can be performance-based. Like running a certain distance, lifting a certain weight etc.

Going with Emerson here, “The reward of a thing well done is to have done it.”

I reward myself when I hit goals, not necessarily scale goals, like my biggest thing was getting into a size 5/6 jeans, I own like 10 pair of those babies just because my closet even as a teenager was no smaller then a 9/10 and I've worked my *kitten* off to get here. I like to reward when losing inches, or for behavior, like this week my goal has been to try and go 1 full week without bad sugar and bad carbs which can fall back into bad sugar, I try it for a week to challenge myself then once I do it I usually find it wasn't that hard once I got past the mind game of it and I stick with it, but I reward myself for sticking with it for the 1 week. If I'm a good girl and don't cheat, normally on things like this I'd reward myself with a glass of chocolate wine or Margarita but seeing as that is a bad carb I'm gonna have to find something else, so probably a new work top lol. My week started on Friday for this whole challenge for myself. So far so good. I'm also taking out sweeteners.
