My quick fall back meal for dinner is a raspberry vinaigrette salad. Toss in a cup or two of lettuce you like, a hand full of nuts, a small portion of your favorite cheese, sliced apple pieces or grapes and some natural raspberry dressing. YUM! :)

If you're trying for a no carb dinner, you could also do a lean ground turkey patty 2-4 oz, your favorite veggie and a fruit.

When you find some that you really love, have stuff to make them on hand and keep a list of them on your fridge so you don't have to think about it or hunt, it's what I do! :)

    Hope that helps,
    Jen

There's nothing wrong with having rice, potatoes, etc with dinner. I do normally as do a lot of people who have had success with weight loss.

Roast dinner is a good one as my SO can have potatoes, but I'll fill up my plate with roast veggies and meat.
I've been known to swap spaghetti bolognaise for bolognaise on veggies too :) it tastes amazing!

If you are looking for ideas check out Everyday Food Magazine (they have free recipes online too). If you get the magazine they are very easy to log because they give you all of the nutrition info! :)

Also, it's the quality of calories that matters when you are talking about things like rice and potatoes. Roasted potatoes (roasted with olive oil) are actually quite good for you. You can cook things like brown rice and mix in roasted veggies.

If you're talking fried rice and french fries of course that's different.

Time of Day does not matter.

Why aren't you supposed to eat rice, potatoes or bread for the last meal?? I don't eat many potatoes or bread at any time, but I often have brown rice with dinner. It didn't stop me from meeting my goal and maintaining it for more than a year.

Agreed. Brown rice has many health benefits. I've also heard it's great in a rice cooker. :)

To keep it simple, I have protein the size of a deck of cards, a salad (as big as I want with non-starchy veggies) and a side of non-starchy veggies with spray butter(I can't believe it's not butter) such as zucchini, broccoli, cauliflower, asparagus, brussel sprouts, green beans, or whatever is in season. But, not every night can be like this & I have a family to feed.

As for the starchy foods, I eat brown rice (instant) with stir-fry (luv) and wheat pasta when we have spagetti or pasta salads, and sweet potatoes (baked). I have changed my breads over to pita bread - whole wheat( because it has the lowest points for weight watchers) and sometimes I will buy a loaf of light whole wheat bread or Thomas' whole wheat lite english muffins. You can use the pita bread pockets as buns for burger(Boca, turkey, tacos) and as a pizza base. I also pick up low carb tortillas to use whenever (wraps, burritos,). Oh, and I buy Jennie 'O Turkey Ham & the light turkey sausages & I really like salmon burgers - easy to cook up.

To keep me from craving carbs, I try to have a cheat meal once a week. It's usually Sunday morning breakfast (pancakes). Can't help it, when the weather gets cold, all I want to eat is bready food. Oh, & I am not attending W.W. anymore - I get better support here! Good luck & friend me if you want to view my food diary - isn't always perfect - but honesty is better anyway.

In terms of alternatives - we enjoy baked sweet potatoes (or even sweet potato "fries"), quinoa (need to add flavor to it such as cooking in chicken stock), whole wheat/high protein pasta, or even just a starchy veg (corn this time of year is delightful).

But I have eaten the items you listed an still lost weight. I just measure or weigh my portions like anything else.

I had a delicious baked potato last night (just half, skin on), with a touch of light butter and some Old Bay - delicious!
  • I made this last night and instead of having it over rice we did it with the egg on top...SUPER delicious!

Thanks for the tip re: Old Bay. That sounds great! And yes, baked potatoes are good for you (or roasted and sliced thin as I mentioned).

I do eat carbs with my last meal but try to eat early enough to metabolize them. A six o'clock dinner seems to work for me, then I have a last snack of either egg whites or milk which metabolize very quickly. The body does a lot of repair work while you sleep so I try to get in easily metabolized essential amino acids as a my last snack.

Unless you have a issue with them then I would say avoid them but if not there is no reason you have to avoid them at all... Having BBQ Chicken breast on the Grill with Sweet Potato Fries and Young baby peas for supper tonight as a matter of fact... Only thing I avoid is enriched flour, white breads and white rice and stick to multi-grains, brown rice, but do it potatoes every week.... I am liking Sweet potato's more and more.. Never use to eat them... Best of Luck!!

My favorite dinner right now is grilled chicken breast with a dry rub on it (just watch the sodium since a lot of rubs are high in salt) with a baked sweet potato (no butter or sugar needed, add a little cinnamon if you want some extra flavor) and steamed veggies. Make sure your chicken is a good portion size, since what often comes in the package is too big.

I also very much enjoy baked marinated salmon with similar sides. Of course I love baked sweet potatoes and I could eat them several times a week.

Tonight we are having baked ziti with whole wheat pasta and a side salad with fat free dressing and a pinch of cheese.

Stuffed peppers, zucchini/spaghetti squash spaghetti, zucchini lasagna, roast with onions/carrots, tacos wrapped in lettuce, salmon/sweet pot/broccoli, Steak with roasted brussel sprouts, big salad with only olive oil, fish tacos(wrapped in lettuce), stuffed sweet potatoes, stuffed zucchini, portabello mushroom pizzas.

I follow a Primal lifestyle so most of these will be higher protein/fat and low carb.

    Good luck!! :)
