Do you count your coffee & other beverages in your water intake?....or do you count water separately?

Don't know the correct answer, but I only count water in my water count. LOL

I don't because coffee is also a diuretic, so it will help flush water out of your system as well. However, there is still water in it and other soft drinks, and they can still be good for hydrating. More water the better though.

I count everything. Although I am forgetful when it comes to logging water. I have a cup that holds 40 oz's and I take it with me for work, I usually drink 2 cups worth on an average day. On days I don't have any work I'm more mindful to pay attention to how much I drink.

You can count 1 cup of mildly brewed coffee in your water intake as the diuretic effect is negligible until 3-4 cups. Same goes for tea, mildly infused teas can be counted as water and of course herbal teas. Any strong coffee or tea (even green tea) does not count as water.

It really depends. I count coffee and tea as water. Yes, coffee is a diuretic but the effect is so slight (unless you are drinking tons of coffee and nothing else) that it really won't affect you overall.

I won't count anything that is sugary such as juice as water.

Edit: I also put all of my drinks other than water in my diary.

You can count anything liquid except maybe alcohol as your body is wonderfully capable of extracting the water that is in beverages. As others posted, the diuretic effect of coffee is often hghly over estimated (as shown by studies from Mayo Clinic etc. )

if it has caffeine or is carbonated I don't count it. Gatorade, powerade, crystal light, water..I count as water. But I do the zero calorie gatorades and powerades.

i count plain h2o as water. from the tap or from a bottle. if i add anything to it, the integrity of it is compormised to me, even though others don't feel that way, it's more personal. i say do what makes you happy, to me, if i drink tea, coffee, etc all in the same day, great but I will deff. still have 8servings of plain water.

Seperate. Coffee is dehydrating and i feel better drinking water. At the same time though if I had homenade no salt added soup and a bunch of fruit and liquids well I think if I got 8 glasses on top of that id feel sick. But if i put something in my body I dont want a lot of in my body, I try to drink water after. If I just had some vitamin I needed, I try not to dilute it away :p donno if thats the good thing to do or not bit thats my logic

Everyone is different and studies can be found to support both sides of the debate, the best thing to do is test yourself. For a week count only water as water get in your 8 cups, then try it the liquid=water way. See how you feel and go from there. For me personally I view water as water because I feel better when I'm drinking more plain water.

Recent research shows that this is not true and that caffeine has a diuretic effect only if you consume large amounts of it — more than 500 to 600 milligrams (the equivalent of 5 to 7 cups of coffee) a day.

    ^From Mayo Clinic.

Like I said, it depends on how you drink you coffee and tea. My one cup is usually a (double espresso) americano if not any stronger. That's 200mg caffeine by book if not more.
  • I count coffee as coffee and water as water. Coffee has calories - maybe a small about, but they are there. I count them all.

I usually have at least 5 cups of coffee a day, LOL.

Black of course. I don't feel bad about not logging it because there is almost no calories in black coffee...

I don't stop at (my) one cup either :p I know I'm getting more caffeine than the average, coffee coupled with black tea so I never count them as water.

If someone's drinking 6 cups (regular brew around 100mg per cup), and get 2 cups of water and total them up to 8, I think they can use more water than they do.

I don't "count" water. I drink to hydration. And other drinks can hydrate me, although I do try to limit myself to my morning coffee and then water the rest of the day. If you drink things other than water, count the calories to make sure you're within your goals. But as long as your urine is almost clear, you're drinking plenty. Stop worrying about "counting" your water intake.

I dont know why, but this made me laugh. Sums it up pretty clearly. :)
  • I don't count anything but water in my water count. My coffee gets logged in my breakfast.

I don't bother logging my coffee because I drink it black and it has very little calories (I have up to two cups a day, if that) but I do track water and anything else I might drink (like my SPARK advocare drink which is only 45 calories). If I have beer or soda I always track that as well.

Only water for water, coffee goes in my breakfast total. There are are calories to count even if you drink it black (which I don't :-O)
