I have never been comfortable with exercising, very insecure so this is one area I am having trouble with.. I bought tapes that would sit in a drawer until I would discard them.. I need to work in this area to help with my goal at weight loss and to tightening up from the weight loss. Any suggestions would be appreciated for a beginner I guess:indifferent: :noway: :ohwell:

Find something you like so you'll want to do it0

The buddy system! Having a person or people to keep you accountable is so helpful when you're first starting out! I also encourage setting little mini-goals, because your motivation skyrockets as you achieve those small milestones. Reward yourself for your successes (but DON'T use food for a reward). Example: If you work out 4 times this week, treat yourself to a manicure or something.0

Boy, do I know the feeling! I just went through those feelings for the last year.
But I just started with a trainer recently, who showed me around the gym and told me exactly what to do, exactly how many reps and exactly how many sets to do. She gave me pointers for adjusting the seat on the machines, where the weights should be set, etc. It was great. Many gyms now a days give 1 or 2 personal trainer sessions for free.
If Cardio is your thing, then this is what my trainer suggested as a start for the treadmill or elliptical machines:
5 min Warm-up (easy pace)
3 min rest set (increase incline slightly, keep moderate pace)
1 min work set (increase incline and speed, feel like you’re working)
3 min rest set (decrease incline and speed, recover)
1 min work
Repeat 3min/1 min x 4 more times (total of 6 rounds, = 24 min)
6 min cool down
Hope that helps. Good luck to you! YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!!!0 -
I never had any luck with the "at home" stuff either. Too many distractions at home to give it my all. I started at the gym..half the battle was getting there. Once I was there it was fine - put my head phones on and listen to my music and pretend like I'm the only one there. It's worked for me so far.0

try a variety of things until you find what you like - swimming, spin bikes, classes like zumba or kick boxing, solo at the gym, etc. There is something for everyone - you just gotta find it!
Personally, I love Zumba (but I suggest you try it 3 times before deciding if you like it or not) but for others in solo on the treadmill or a spin class or outdoor biking or rollerblading or.....0 -

I HATE EXERCISING!
As much as I like the concept of doing DVDs at home without anyone around, I have this niggling fear that I am doing the exercise wrong. So in an effort to not hurt myself...I don't do them.
Finding support on this site was HUGE for me.
I started by getting a gym membership. Making sure to remind myself of the wasted money if I didn't go.
Once I realized I liked the treadmill, I started the C25K program.
Posted it as a group on here to see anyone else was/wanted to do it at the same time...had 98 people doing it with me!
I would definitely suggest this program. It's great to see the progress you make from Day 1 to Day ?
After I was bored with that (completed week 5 of 9), I needed something else to do.
So I surfed on here and found a group doing a "Mission Slim Possible" July challenge.
It started with walking and each added a new challenge to the walk...weights, ab exercises, finally more miles, reps, etc.
I'm really enjoying that. Hope I can find something else similar for next month.
I find I'm much better at exercising when I have a plan to follow and have to log it somewhere that I did what I was supposed to.
(I created an excel spreadsheet for everything...tracked myself beginning to end).0 -
I found that doing stuff at home was much easier for me since I could come home, change clothes, get the kid set up with something and work out to my dvd for 30 min whether it was Zumba or Jillian Micheals and then be done. I didn't have to worry about how I looked if It was silly or if I had to modify something. I was moving. You just have to jump in and get started. I hated excercising at first because it was hard but I found that I have become addicted to the good feelings I get when done.0

When i first started working out i was the same way. I had a hard time getting up to go to the gym. (went 4 in the morning) I would find every excuse not to go. So what i did was start rewarding myself. If i went to the gym for a whole week i would treat myself to a couple scoops of ice cream or something. This actually worked in teh beginning. Now i am at the point that i feel lost for the day if i don't get on the treadmill.
In the beginning it will be hard especially if you are not having fun. So find something to reward yourself with and find something you like doing. Oh and have fun.0
