anyone eat tesco value porrige/rolled oats?help me

I'm so confused,

It says on the packet that its 50g cooked for 190 cals but surely that couldn't be true thats such a small serving. I had 150g cooked today and now don't know if i've ate nearly 600 cals or 200 for breakfast.

Please help

Their web site quotes 180 calories for 50g.
  • I woul guess that nutrition value is 50g sry oats cooked in waer (semi skimmed milk?)
Check the nutrition value per 100g product (the aisle usually before 'per serving') and add any milk calories if used to calculate the porridge nutrition values. Give me a shout of you nd any help with calculations ;)

50g looks small when dry, but once you put milk / water to cook it, it becomes quite a big bowl. Maybe you need to start looking at portion size, I was shock how much 30g of rice crispy there is... looks like a child portion! :noway:

Oh, tips on keep calories down, try using milk alternative if you can't stand water, I use Kara Coconut milk, Almond milk or Hazelnut milk instead of semi skimmed or 1% fat milk (can't stand skimmed), they are about 60 cal in 200ml.

^^ That's true; that's why I think it's good to get an electronic scale. Saying that, I was even more shocked that the 'child-size looking' portion was enough to fill me up.

Thanks for checking that out for me- on the packet it says 190cals for 50g cooked in water. A 50g protion cooked wouldn't feed a child never mind a grown woman, i'm so woried i've ate 600 cals on breakfast but I don't see how that could be poss

Is your scale correct? I eat 40g of porridge most day and it looks more like a handful. If you are eating 150g of porridge then you are better off eating 2 slices of wholemeal toast with low fat spread as this is less cal than 150g of porridge with milk.

Is it 40g after cooked but that you're eating?

50g dry made with 300ml of semi skimmed milk is roughly 345 calories. When cooked, that should be a fairly big bowlful.

50g of dry oats is about 10 heaped tablespoons (the big ones) You might need to check your scales.

50g would be the dry weight. I usually have about 35g of dry oats and add in extras. The oats alone work out at about 120kcals, so 190 for 50g makes sense. Hope that helps x

Ok so am I correct in saying this, if you go by the dry weight its 380 cals and half that its 50g dry ok so 50g dry is 190 cals so 190 cals dry when thats cooked I can still eat the lot and it will still be 190 cals (apart from my toppings?)

I was taking 50g as the cooked weight which doubles or trebils when cooked so was judging it by 50g cooked when I said its a childs portion

Are you weighing 50g of dried oats and making as directed? When cooked it will weigh much more and is a decent portion size. Personally I only use 30g with added fruit and nuts and that keeps me going for hours.

I have these exact oats every day. 50g dry oats is 180 cals. I make it with 150ml skimmed milk and 100ml water. I also add agave nectar and whatever soft fruit I fancy. Today's total breakfast calories was 302cals with a cup of tea. I am a hungry gal and this always keeps me going till lunchtime! There's no way you accidentally ate almost four times that - it would be a huge mound of porridge!! As people have said 50g is the dry weight before you add anything, and if it looks tiny after it's cooked then there's something wrong with your scales!

Yea I actually split the 50g dried between me and my 2 year old today. I think it just freaked me out that it said 50g cooked was 190 cals and I took it wrong but seeing the dry weight I think i'm a bit clearer.

    Thanks everyone

Another one who eats 50g of dry oats for breakfast every morning. The bowl looks quite full and I just add water to cook them in. Definitely a decent portion, keeps me full past lunch time most days.

Some foods are much more calorie dense than seems possible, it's only since I have been following MFP that i have realised how many calories are in foods. I usually use 75G for a breakfast portion.
